I've read that you should only have one anti-whatever program resident in memory at a time, otherwise multiple programs might interfere with each other.

Does this mean that if I wanted to have an anti-virus program running in real-time, then I couldn't have an anti-spyware program also running in real time? Or is it the case that I can have an anti-virus program and an anti-spyware program running in real time, but not 2 anti-virus or 2 anti-spyware programs running in real time?

you can only have one antivirus real time. and its reccomended to only use one real time antispyware but sometimes you can run more than one as long as they dont conflict. odvisally only ever run one real time antivirus.

2 AV's real time is unacceptable but 2 realtime AS is actually okay as long as they get along.

OK, so I can run an anti-virus program and an anti-spyware program at the same time. But now that I think about it... why wouldn't that cause a problem? If you download something or you try to execute something, wouldn't both the AV and the AS try to analyze it at the same time? Or do I not understand how AV and AS programs work?

One of the programs will have priority and act first.

Unless the two programs are both made by the same company, how can one have priority over the other?

Prevx1 or similar products act like a big real-time shield.
Is it stronger than all these real-time shields of scanners ? Beats me.

On my dell laptop i run outpost pro's antispyware plug in alongside Computer Associates Antispyware. By themselves they are average, but together i figure they should be pretty good.

i think it's because antivirus always have the first priority and antispyware is designed not to interfere with av's and to scan only after the av's...

you need one AV realtime, plus at least one AS realtime to protect your system. Sometime AV will not so effective to catch malware, that when AS come into action. if you have additional HIPS/CIPS, they will be the 1st response team.
