I was a long time firefox user .... but am leaning towards Opera these days.

I replaced to new Internet Explorer 7 on my laptop for trail test on NOD32 v2.5. I will find out it's better or not ?

Never IE, even for updates. I rather go to
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx
and manually select the updates I need and want.
Saves me lots of unnecessary patches, and lots of unnecessary dangerous Office patches as shown recently. Running openoffice instead. http://www.openoffice.org/index.html
One of my teachers recently was updating his XP laptop using Windows Update during class. After download completion, he proceeded to reboot. The laptop never started again. It required a complete reformat and reinstall. I guess one should image one's system before automatically or blindly Windows Updating... But it seems a pity to me.

Offtopic, I very much dislike IE, but I think problems with Windows Update usually begin when you start poking into things you shouldn't. Or when people run cracked versions.

Firefox is the best - mainly because you can add extensions like
customizegoogle which allows you to stop all google adsense adverts from appearing, also it adds a lot of functionality to google searches. Adblock plus is also a good extension. On average using these two extensions browsing is about %50 faster and searching is about %500 more accurate

Internet explorer 7 is bloatware and slows not only browsing the web - but opening directories on a drive is slow
it takes so long to figure out IE's options that after 1/2 an hour you lose the will to live. Theyve dumbed it down so much and hidden the proper functionality beneath a thick layer of BS

I see that Firefox is the winner in this thread, which is normal because Firefox is simply the best in many ways. IE looks like a Swiss chease with many holes.
The funny thing about IE is its version number. It's much higher than Firefox's version number and IE is still not as good as Firefox. How is THAT possible ?
Possible answer might be : Firefox is created by people with brains, IE is created by people with money.

Absolutely firefox is the best. There may be more options in IE 7 but they way they are arranged and the actual lack of intuitive design makes IE7 the biggest load of steaming BS I've seen in a longwhile
infact only Torpark is worse (well I mean the software - not the browser for Torpark which is of course firefox)

Voted Firefox.

For three reasons...


(1) Open-source

Response time to security issues is MUCH faster compared to what Microsoft can muster. (****, I bet even the Opera developers can do a better job).

Interesting to note that Microsoft addressed a DRM issue quicker than they handled a security issue in their products!

I guess its priorities...Microsoft is about making money. Content Providers pay big bucks for DRM! Open-source isn't. (Its about the software and the people...The community).

Another advantage is that, unlike IE and Microsoft, if Mozilla starts slacking off and leaves Firefox for dead, there is no one stopping you "forking" this project and continue Firefox's legacy. (But for legal reasons, you must adopt a new name and logo for your version of Firefox)....Just remember IE6 and how it was left stagnated for a few years! This isn't gonna happen with an open-source solution.

If you have skills, I suppose you could dig into Firefox's code and find out why the flying f**k it starts off loading slow and consumes a fair bit of RAM. Maybe develop your own custom version? Don't forget to share it with the world!


(2) Runs on Linux, Windows and OpenBSD.

I use all three. Its nice to unify your browsing experience no matter what OS you use. (There are slight differences in the arrangement of some entries in the menus, but that's it...Nothing major).

Obviously, IE is a Windows-Only thing, because Microsoft wants you to use nothing but Windows. (Well, Windows is their biggest money maker...But what do you expect when you bundle that OS to nearly every PC on the planet?)

One thing to note...If I use a trimmed down (read FAST and highly response) Linux distro with Firefox, it does pretty well. If I use it with Windows or those typical desktop distro, like Ubuntu or OpenSUSE, its bloated. (It must be something being called that slows it down)


(3) Extensions.

This is the best idea to come out of a browser. Only add new capabilities that you want and need. Who would've thought? Adblock and NoScript is all I really need. (Yes, you can share your AdBlock list from Linux to Windows to BSD...It doesn't matter!)


As you can see, I'm NOT an MS fan. (I downright HATE what they've done to the computer industry), and I always look for alternatives when possible.

Integrating apps like IE and Outlook into an OS is the WORST idea from a security perspective...Not to mention their insistance to continually use ActiveX. (Look in Vista and how they just slap more and more security features!)...FFS! Its a 15GB install!

If it wasn't for Windows, we wouldn't have this huge security industry. If you've used another OS other than Windows, you'd realise how much garbage you don't need. (all these third-party security apps everyone is playing with in Windows are not even needed! Its crazy!)

Ironically, its this very industry (along with the EU), that has pressured Microsoft into opening up Vista's security API! (Microsoft created a greedy monster that turned against them.)

I frequently pay to use computers in net cafes which have trojans on every computer and the first thing i do is download firefox - not from the mozilla site because the trojan redirects to it's own trojaned version for download, but i download firefox from google with google toolbar .... and then i feel safer logging in to my various online accounts, and the browser doesn't crash nearly as much, and the pop-ups don't bug me nearly as much...

Yes , big up for Firefox but ...
Unfortunately , what you describe won't save you . No matter what application browser you use (IE or Firefox , or Opera ) your data can very easily be stolen in public machines (net cafes) because of keyloggers . They log everything you type with the keyboard (both physical and virtual) and then transfer it to the bad boy .

i feared that. i once had ownership control of an irc room full of spy bots (i just found them and registered the room they went to) and i saw the keylogged passwords being typed in by so many people....

i guess i'd better be changing all my passwords asap

I wonder, how would you put more intuitively hundreds of settings in a few tabs.
But this does not bother me, I set up IE completelly just my merging my reg file in a sec.

I just recently tried FF2 (been using IE forever) and I prefer FF on all counts except for a very annoying problem with test-size (I never had this kind of problem with IE).

When I get the text-size just right my home page it's much too large on some other websites. Then if I re-set the text size to my liking for those other websites, my home page (and some others) are adversely affected.

I haven't found a way to instruct FF to save my desired text-size on a website-by-website basis. As I said above, I'm new to FF - so is there a solution for this problem?
