Is there a free firewall to replace ZA for Win98?

I have used the paid version of Zone Alarm for several years but I now find it no longer supports Win98.

Is there a good free replacement or have I reached the end of the road with Win98?

(I checked out Comodo but is does not support Win98 either).

 

The free Kerio 2.1.5 should be an excellent alternative. You could bolster its defences with System Safety Monitor a free HIPS application.

This combination will afford excellent application filtering and control without posing a significant drain on your machine. There is a bit of a learning curve with SSM, but it is well worth the effort.

 

Filseclab Personal Firewall, Jetico (v1) and Sygate are some other free alternatives.

if u dont mind paying, then u could try Outpost Firewall Pro.

An excellent combination but especially for Win98/ME. There's a bit of a learning curve for Kerio 2.1.5 as well but it isn't that difficult.
Now that Microsoft and many other software vendors have stopped supporting Win98, securing and maintaining it are now the users problem exclusively. To continue using Win98 safely, users need to learn how the system works. The more you understand how Win98 works, the better you'll be able to configure Kerio 2.1.5 and SSM free to defend it. It's an easy operating system to understand, once you get into it.

I would just keep using the older versions of zonealarm that support win98. Even tho they are out of date they are still very secure and offer good protection. Heck i still use versions 3 & 4 on some very old computers, as a basic firewall they do a great job.

Someone tested Netveda and the program appears to have some kind of internal time clock that activates and prompts you for a license key after using the program for a duration. Several users have reported this problem on the tech support forum. No support has been given since the end of last year, so you may on your own if you use the software. Also, if the license key prompt comes up later, then you might be prevented from using the software (unless you set your PC clock backwards).
