Ditch Kerio 2.1.5 for Comodo?

I have used Kerio 2.1.5 for several years. I started with Tiny, and when they made some changes I had to go to Kerio. I do not remember all the details, but think I have used Kerio 2 almost from the time it was available.

I use LnS on one computer, but on the laptop have retained Kerio. It has not given any trouble with any AV, and I am using Avira Classic.

Would there be any significant advantage to change to Comodo? In one sense, I hate to train another firewall, although I read that Comodo works well out of the box. Kerio 2 has served me well so far.

I dropped Kerio 2.1.5 for comodo for a short time and have switched back to kerio. I just like the way it works.

 

I found that Kerio reduced my bandwidth considerably. I did a line speed test and download speed increased significantly when I wasn't using Kerio. Comodo doesn't seem to affect my bandwidth at all.

 

Me too especially behind my NAT Router and it is so light on my old Compaq. It is serving me well. I need to tighten it up a little more likely. It is a super companion with Antivir and BOClean. Very pleased.

Comodo is a fine Firewall too, I used it for awhile on my family pc, but for my Compaq Kerio 2.1.5 is best.

No effect on my Bandwidth.

 

booglywoogly, kerio doesn't effect my internet speed at all, test results are the same with/without Kerio.

 

When compared to using no firewall, my system is actually slightly faster with Kerio 2.1.5, probably from blocking unneeded items from wasting my bandwidth. It's only noticable because I use dialup. On other systems I've installed it, haven't seen any slowdown. There are some reports of slowdowns being tied to using the DNS resolving feature, but I haven't run into it.

Kerio 2.1.5 is speediest, & quite secure. As for bandwidth impact -- assurdità assoluta!

It is easy to get caught up in the latest, but Kerio has worked well for me.

I recently read that there was a known issue with Kerio 2.1.5 regarding shutdown, but I cannot find it again. I have had such a problem with failure to shutdown, but only 1 or 2.

Anyone have knowledge of that?

For years it has always been well behaved.

 

Comodo is a very secure firewall, but I would hold off on it until the developers work out a few of its issues regarding its forgetfulness of rules after applications are updated. It prompts for the changes on the application's cryptographic signature and libraries which is expected and reassuring to see, but then it starts prompting for network access using rules that have already been created for it. It's as if it treats the updated app as new, even after you have accepted the signature and library changes and enabled the "Remember" option as well.

The other issue with with it is that if one denies access to an app such as a web browser because another process that has not yet been verified is using COM/OLE attempts on it or is modifying, let's say, explorer.exe in memory, the browser will be blocked network access until a reboot is performed, though I have been able to get around this by logging off/on again.

The firewall is almost overprotective at times and this could drive some people bonkers (I think it already has ) with all the alerts.

Kerio 2.1.5 is a very light firewall offering decent security on application and packet filtering. However, you may want to run a HIPS application such as System Safety Monitor or Process Guard to compliment it.

 

Personally, I would stay with Kerio,... and as mentioned by "cprtech", would install PG or SSM (there are free versions of both).

 

Wish that was the case for me 'cos I actually quite like Kerio.

 

I use both Kerio 2.1.5 and Comodo.
My favorite between the 2 happens to be Kerio, I like the fexibility Kerio gives for creating rules.

I am still waiting on the firewall from Online Armor and after the MP1 of Kaspersky comes out I will look into using KIS.

If either of these 2 are good I may drop Comodo, I like CPF but I'm not overly thrilled about the program and I definitely DO NOT care if CPF is for free.

 

I am using Comodo right now and love it, except I had to turn off DLL injection monitoring to lower CPU usage. But I have System Safety Monitor anyway. I personally would use an updated firewall, but Kerio 2.1.5 still seems to do the job.

 

Comodo here. And happy with it. Not relying on a particular product as I use common sense, surf within the safety zone:

and under Limited. And if something bad happens delete this account and open a new one and set it up, which roughly takes me 15 min. Not a big deal.

I would ditch Kerio as it's oudated and a pain to setup, but that's me and not you or the rest of the crowd.

I have tried out various firewalls including Comodo and keep coming back to Kerio 2.1.5. Plain and simple and works. I run together with PG and BOClean so that they can watch each others backs. Comodo was far too annoying so got rid of it PDQ.

 

Using Comodo with no probs.

Tried Kerio 2.1.5 but had the BSOD offline defrag with Perfect Disk.

Is there a simple fix to the above besides disabling - re-enabling Kerio's driver.?

kerio 2.1.5 is a very nice program. A few of us like myself have of course tried Comodo but came back to the old firewall.
I value it cause it feels it is the least black box of the software firewalls I have known. Makes a breeze to have any program made internet rules.

Some form of HIPS of course could be added.

 

Kerio 2.1.5 might be an older firewall, but it's very effective. It doesn't have all the newest bells and whistles the newer ones do, but it does what a firewall is supposed to do, control internet traffic. When Kerio is combined with a separate HIPS like SSM, they will perform as well as any Firewall with built in HIPS, while remaining easy on system resources. I've installed Kerio on a lot of PCs from Win98 thru XP, with excellent results.
