well it's bad news ... nothing has changed for me with a new video card and a reinstall of Nod32. So I think you can rule out that as the cause. :(

    sag,

i remember i had the same problem when i had nod installed on my computer, and i was able to get the problem fixed thanks to these forums, unfortunatelly i can find my post for it and i dont remember the name exact name of the topic, but if i remeber correctly it had to do with the fact that it was loading too fast, i think i needed to enable a flash screen for another thing that was loading and that took care of the problem, again im not totally sure about this i am going from memory about 10 months ago or so, i hope this helps you.

    PS i also am a sag 12/15/67

This seemed to be the case when I experienced this problem (probably the same old thread). I changed my windows to log-on required which sufficiently slowed everything down and for many months the problem was gone. On the other hand many other posters at that time did not think that a slower log-on would have any influence, so not sure about that.
Recently without changing this log-on procedure, I do encounter the odd boot-up with NOD quickly "saying hello" and then vanishing. While it is clearly still there (as can be seen in the taskmanager) and doing its job, the tray icon does not show.
While I know that the icon does not have to be there, I just feel better if I can see it, so I usually reboot and that does take care of it.
At present I think I have the issue perhaps once every two weeks but for many months the problem was completely gone.

well, it's good to hear there have been fellow "sufferers" ... the thing is that it worked perfectly well for years until I got it into my head to do a clean install of XP.

PS 1967 ... oh my, I suddenly feel soooooooooo OLD lol :(

So what you're saying is that if I create a user login, it may slow down the time Windows takes to fully load?

I think you may be onto something with here, bec the other program that's giving me grief by not loading, is Webshots, which doesn't load on boot, but has to be manually started, just like the Nod32 Control Centre.

I turned on the guest account, and now the NOD32 sys tray icon is showing when the computer starts up. Go figure.

Odd thing though, when the welcome screen comes up, the guest account isn't showing as a log-in choice.

I have the same video card, running the same drivers at home (newer drivers are out btw) but have never had such an incident.. indeed strange.

I have only personally seen this a few times and only with ATI video cards, however, there are others here that have seen it with nVidia, though not as many. It is one strange issue indeed.

    Cheers :D

If you can insure that the "nod32kui.exe" process is indeed running, I would check my application error log.

    Right click My Computer>Manage>Event Viewer>Application

    See if anything looks odd?

BerserkerPup, what if you merely log out of the user account, and then log back in? Try this instead of a full reboot.

The fix didn't work 100% for me until I created a passworded login.
At first, It worked when I created a user account & logged out & back in, but after the next reboot it stopped working.
So I added the password & now it works all the time ... btw, I have since discovered 2 other new icons (apart from the Webshots one) that weren't showing before and I hadn't even missed - my Logitech Keyboard Profiler and Video Card Controls.

very interesting Algove; I never thought it was a widespread issue until I discovered there had been other "missing" icons apart from the Nod32 control centre, that I hadn't noticed were missing, till they reappeared.

I'd say this is the main culprit in most cases (imho):
    Disable Automatic Logon
The problem of tray icons not appearing in the system tray (notification area) usually occurs when starting the computer, when it is configured for automatic log-on. The problem does not usually occur if you log out and then log back in again. Logging out and then logging back in again is a pretty reliable workaround for the problem, but it is a bit of an annoyance if you have to do it every day.

Just the latest on The Matter Of The Mysterious Icon:

When I start up the computer, the icon doesn't show up, but once the program does its automatic update, it appears and stays. The problem I was having a few days ago with the automatic updating seems to have disappeared.

I can live with that.
