Kaspersky AOL (iChecker/iSwift enabled and scan new and changed files only) takes only 14 seconds to scan my C drive (5 GB).

Did you accept the EULA? Usually a check mark.

Yes. But nevermind, it works now.
I had a fresh install of Windows, and since I installed it on my SATA HDD it detected my IDE HDD as C:\ so that's probably why it didn't install. It did a new install this time made it right and it worked. Blah! :p

I'm using AOL AV since it came out, and generally I think it's great! Very good detection rates and not high impact on system performance.

But something is getting me worried... CHKDSK is reporting errors since I installed it and sometimes strange things happen like MSN messenger started with windows installer saying it's running for the first time (it was not), or Opera in the middle of my browsing saying that there's no disk in drive C:

In kaspersky forums some people reported similar problems with chkdsk, and said that could be related with iswift or whatever. I have no clue since I'm not a power user.

I'll keep using AOL AV since I quite like it, I usually backup my data and this issue is probably not relevant.

BTW my laptop is quite new, so I think it's not hardware related...

Thanks in advance for any possible help or guidance.

Hello. One quick question. Is the E-Mail protection with AVS the same as all the other free Antivirus in that it doesn't work with a browser. I use FireFox and have Gmail, but don't use ThunderBird or Outlook. I hope I made this clear. I want to add that I am quite impressed with what all I have read here from everyone, it was very informative. The KAV Forum was informative too. Thanks ahead of time.

If you use Gmail which is webbased then you might as well disable the mail-protection. The file-av will take care of it instead.

Thanks for your help. So far I like this app a lot, and have changed a few settings in the Protection section to scan new and changed files only, and by content. I read here that this is supposed to make KAV use less resources. I was wondering however, should I also do this in the Scan section in order to cut down on length of scan time? One more thing. I think I understand the back up file proceedure, but is this as safe as having a Quarantine? I'm not quite sure what to do if KAV does ever find something. Thanks again.

    1. I would (& do) use "all files" and do not use "scan new and changed files only" in the scan options, only in the file-av do i use these. Your choice.

    2. Backup is for deleted files, quarantine is for suspicious files, otherwise they're the same, this is also why you can send files from quarantine directly to the lab for analysis.

Okay Don Pelotas. I will leave the Scan section set at all files, and leave the Protection file-av set on new files only as you said. I have also turned off the E-Mail protection because it's web based, but when I did I got a pop up reading 1 port is open, and a count down to make a decision for something I can't remember at the moment. I was just wondering why that came up? I do understand Antivirus Programs E-mail protection only covers programs like ThunderBird, but is it for certain this particular E-Mail protection will do nothing for me using Yahoo Mail, or GMail with FireFox? Finally, I only asked about Quarantine because I read in an earlier post that this version didn't have one, but I found both Quarantine and Back Up under summary tabs, so thanks for explaining what they're used for, and of course all your help.

Because it is filtered through a proxy, you can just leave it if you wish, it not like it uses a lot of CPU. Gmail uses encrypted connections so you can't scan it anyway between the Gmail servers and you, thats where the file-av comes in to do the job instead.

Thanks I appreciate the help, but I'm still wondering about the message "there is 1 open port services will be terminated, (E_MAIL of course) are you sure you want to do this" Is this open port something I need to be concerned about, or is this normal when terminating E-Mail? Alos did you see the AV Comparitive Retrospective/Pro Active Tests for May? I know Antivir had a lot of False Positives, but it still had a better percentage than KAV Pro. Is this a big deal do you think? Thanks.

If I may ask for opinions: I am running NAV 2006 (along with Spyware Doctor 4.0 and ZA free 6.5). Should I replace NAV with AOL AVS?

    TIA...

If you still have some miles on your Norton subscription, then why not use it? Unless you're really unsatisfied with it? Until then you could use the also free Kaspersky webscanner as a second opinion:http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner, it won't remove, but will list where it's located so you can delete manually.

If you do decide to uninstall Norton, then i would go through these removal steps:http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showtopic=5233, trust me when i say that they are worth the 10-15 minutes spent on it.:)

Thanks for the comments (and the uninstall info)... So from all I've read (which is quite a bit now :)) it seems NAV 2006 and AOL AVS may have similar detection abilities but AVS updates its signatures more often...

How about system load? I'm particularly concerned about "on-access" or "realtime" scanning since I've had a bad time with ZA Security Suite and Cygwin apps (don't mean to go off-topic; see here if interested).

For most it would be low if you go through the removal steps, if not...............all bets are off! I use the full Kaspersky suite and in my setup it has a very low impact, do a full scan after installing it, and you should see a speedy system after a little while in the recommended setting.

Does anybody manage to install AOL Active Virus Shield (KAV 6.0) as a backup (non-resident) antivirus?
Or, will be the only way installing it as the resident and then disabling the real-time protection? o_O
TAP, how did you do it? A single installation of AVS?
RejZor, the same, are you using 'only' AVS?

That last post makes me wonder now, if AOL AVS can be installed without E-Mail protection like you can with the custom install that AVG Free and Avast offers?

At least not with the .msi file...
I could 'extract' the contents of the file and have, in theory, the files of the final installation... but, of course, without the files in system folders and registry keys, no way... it does not work.
I wish I could test the Kaspersky engine without the resident

This is a bit OT, but with KAV6 trial I think you can install only what you need. KAV6 installer is somewhat more advanced than the one from AVS

Thank you. I don't really need the email protection as I use G-Mail, (I know this isn't the best protection) but still leave it enabled because I don't like seeing "there are some processes not enabled" or what ever it reads. It doesn't seem to use anynmore RAM this way though. Take care.
