maddawgz was referring to SAS' systray icon which looks like a yellow beetle (bug).

Spybot does give some info on what it finds. You have to mouse click it.

    hi all

though id give my 2 cents

IMO its a lil unfair to judge spybot against apps like ewando because apps like ewando are commercial products with full commercial support with a paid staff to update and maintain the program spybot doesn't have this and is a community effort

for a freebie I say spybot stacks up to commercial products like ewando pretty well it sigs are regularly updated and can detect everything these others can so I wouldn't say its becoming ineffective that being said there is definite room for improvement

IMO what spybot does it does well and for a freebie its at least as effective as ewando and these other new kids on the block

if I had to compare spybot against others apps of its kind apps that are free none commercial supported like spybot I still say spybot comes out on top

Why trash someone's efforts based on strictly subjective & anecdotal comments? Have there been any objective tests of this app?

I would like to see any recent tests that show SpyBot detecting anywhere near as much as SpySweeper,Ewido,Spyware Doctor, and CounterSpy.

As he said before, for a freebie spybot is pretty good. I still consider it very good for what it is.

The "issue" here is either to (1) prove that the statement is TRUE (which you infer that others should undertake to do), OR (2) to prove that the statement is false -- which I would think is YOUR job because... (a) you are the one who is "disputing" & (b) you are the one who uses the epithet of "the Tester."

I would like to see such a test. I hope you will decide to do it.

    No bellgamin,

A statement that Spybot "can detect everything these others can" is what needs proving.
Which actually makes it the job of someone that believes that statement.

As I said before,I'd like to see that test.Since the onus isn't on me,I won't be wasting my time to do a test where the results are a foregone conclusion already. You can volunteer to test if you would like.

As for proving anything to you -- who died & appointed you judge & jury for Spybot S&D, eh?

The problem lies with the words "can detect everything." It would be marvelously difficult to undertake any test with the goal of proving the universal positive implied by "everything." Conversely, it would basically constitute a logical absurdity were someone to seek to test/prove a universal negative.

In any event, since I don't call myself "the Tester" I don't need to test anything. I have used Spybot for ever so long -- since back when there were bloody few spybusters of any vintage, whether paid or free. It's done the job for me for a matter of years. Nowadays I use Spybot in conjunction with A-squared non-free, plus SSM, plus a bloody good firewall, plus a Rottweiler-grade AV (grrrr).

Given the fact that I surf clean, pray often, & pay my taxes on time, I feel quite certain that I am okay.o_O

    Hey bellgamin,

That's an interesting question that you posed."Who died and appointed me the judge....?"Now my question is...the way that is phrased I understand that someone died then appointed me a judge.Seems a little difficult to appoint someone to anything after dying.

As far as experience with Spybot,I have used the program enough that I felt the obligation to donate to the developer.

The statement was simple. Now,either Spybot detects everything these other programs do,or it doesn't.Some other programs like SpySweeper and CounterSpy will detect more, anyone knows that.

And since you suggested that I test Spybot,I'll pass. You are a bit too pushy.
Also if you Google Search there are reputable, professional tests already done and one is less than a month old.I'm sure you will find it.

I have used Spybot, Ad-Aware, SAS and Ewido recently to remove a few items of Spyware including such things as Quake and Mirar, on other peoples machines. I found SAS and Ewido in these few cases, while with impressive numbers and quality of infections that they fix left some problems/anomalies with the machine, although this was also due to the Spyware. Spybot had trouble with one and Ad-Awares cleanup was best with no problem.
This was no extensive test just some real situations...which count!
Spybot & Ad-Aware are freeware with some good long history in cleaning infections. I cant knock them for what they are. I suppose if I come across the same Spyware I now know which is currently the best to deal with that particular item. - Just an observation.

As long as you have a will or trust, I think you can actually appoint someone after dying. LOL

As for the effectiveness of a particular program, I think a lot of that depends on what you do on your PC and what kind of malware that you should happen upon as you surf or access the Internet. I have tried a few programs including, Spybot S & D, and many did not detect a trojan program on my system. In fact, McAfee went as far to say on their site that the so-called trojan was not malware but adware (the line between malware and adware seems to be blurred). Symantec had a repair utility especially targeting that trojan. So definitions of spyware was subject to each person's opinions. I have read that many people do consider Spybot to be outdated and not performing as well as better programs such as Spy Sweeper and Spyware Doctor. That may be true in my particular case because it never detected the trojan on my system after repeated scannings (but then a lot of other programs and online scanners did not as well). SAS, Ad-Aware, and Spy Sweeper did all detect the trojan, however, only one program actually identified it within the Windows32 folder which was where the main trojan program had embedded itself (the others were DLL injections, BHO updates, and registry tamperings). So in my case, none of the antispyware programs got rid of my trojan. I had to use a utility especially created for that malware.

    Hi,
I still have Ad-Ware SE and it does catch tracking cookies. I'd like to say that someone else was useing my computer and downloaded something they shouldn't
have. I scanned useing Ad-Aware SE, and it found
3 malware infections. Do you think it still may have a purpose?

SS, ewido, SAS, etc > ad-aware and spybot > no antispyware

    Hi,
I do have different scanners but i didn't use them.
I deleted them with Ad-Aware. Then i found the program that brought them in my start-up list.
I unchecked it rebooted and that took care of the start- up. I found the same program in my add/remove
window. I uninstalled it. Then i found some of the program somewhere else and decided to go back into command prompt and restore the registry to an earlier date. Then all the problems went away.

    Good to hear.

However, it helps show that Ad-Aware isn't top notch removal, but detection is good and it's also good for cookies.

I think during scans AVG attempts to heal them automatically. If it's not during a scan and the Resident detects something, it probably has a Quarantine/ Virus Vault option.
