Spybot no longer effective?

I've read at several places that Spybot isn't very effective anymore. I currently use all of the utilities in my signature. With Spyware Doctor, Ewido, A2 and Ad-Aware would I need Spybot, and has it become ineffective anyway?

yes spybot is becoming ineffective. heck, id give ad-aware teh boot too. spyware doctor and ewido are far better.

if u want a free on-demand scanner, id suggest superantispyware.

 

With all of the antispyware programs that you have it wouldn't be a bad idea to "trim the fat".
Of the free scanners Ewido and A-squared are better than AdAware and Spybot anyway.

Detox I had no idea. It's suprising me since many of the site's test results seemed to mirror my experiences.

 

In general I don't see spyware as a huge threat (anymore). Most people seem to infect their PCs themselves (i.e by installing some software)

(IMO) The sole AS software days are coming to the end (hopefully) and a lot of AV's these days are detecting spyware. Security/anti-malware suites are the way to go.

Having said that Spybot is (1) free (2) offers browser immunization (IE and Opera) and download blocker, (3) offers a host of tools, and (4) has a good reputation (with it's "search and destroy" tag being/been used by other vendor(s)). Unlike Adware, very much a one trick pony still living off it's past glory.

 

Spybot is used as a tracking cookie finder and deleter only. The other really bad stuff is handled better by other more effective programs.

Anyone have a better free suggestion for this task?

Adaware . A-squared . Ewido I have not used.

 

superantispyware is my preferred free antispyware.

 

I haven't used AAW or SS&D in a year or two...

 

It's true about AVs detecting spyware. Avast supposedly detects about 1/3 of spyware. This isn't a great result, but for an AV, that's not so bad.

Anyway, about Spybot, it never seems to be updated much, and what's with that interace? I know it was a volunteer project but it could look a little nicer, and maybe give info on stuff it finds.

Despite Adaware being not so effective, I for some reason love its interface.

 

Hi, folks: So much downwords have been said towards Spybot. Very sad indeed. How about its paid version clone ,Spy Remover, marketed by InfoWorks ? It asks for one time fee of approx.US$ 22.00, no more annual fee. Has anyone have any experience with it ?

 

Hi, folks: Yes, SpyRemover is blacklisted as your quote, but this app (same as SpyCleaner) is NOT the same stock as Spy Remover, I refered, d/l from www.itcompany.com. Pls check spywarewarrior's site again you will know I mean.

superantispyware is great free but how u stop that bug loading on start up??

 

To stop it from loading (on XP at least) go to Start, Run, and type Msconfig. Go to the startup tab and on the list, find "SuperAntispyware" and remove the checkmark. Reboot right then and there if you want, or later, it doesn't matter. Next time, SUPER should not load when you boot.

 

iirc, SAS lets u disable its startup entry from the options section. if not just go with kdm31091's instructions.

You can uncheck the option to "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" in the General and Startup Preferences of SUPERAntiSpyware.

Agree, and there is 'tea-timer'. Some good tools startup, processes etc, a good site/forum, and some good file utilities that are free to download.
Ad-Aware has tools also.
I dont use Spybot because I use other tools and find it hard to knock it as they seem commited and give out free tools to help.

What is that bug loading on start up? I ask because I had this experience running SAS: Windows loaded but programs would not load when you clicked their icons on desktop, taskbar or start menu - except for RegRun, which would sometimes respond to a degree. This went on for numerous boots, and I could not uninstall SAS in Windows Safe mode. Finally I managed to uninstall SAS, and things were OK after that. I'm not at all sure it was SAS causing the problem - which is why I ask about the bug. Otherwise I have been very impressed with SAS.
