    Heavy bug :)

    Situation:
    1. Creating a rule from the right click menu in the log-tab and placing it into a table as Jetico asked.
    2. Opening the rule-table and trying to move the new rule up or down with the mouse results into a bluesecreen 'Violation on bc_ngn.sys'.
    3. Restarting PC
    4. New rule is not saved.

Bug is reproducable on my Windows XP SP2 English System.

    We prepared v 2.0.0.6 beta:
    JPF for 2k/XP and
    JPF for NT/2k/XP
    Changes:
    * "CoCreateInstance failed. hr=0x80070005" bug fixed.
    * System crash on rules with wildcards fixed.
    * "Copy text" function fixed.
    * Group view context menu fixed.
    * "Select log file" and MRU list are removed from log view context menu.
    * Default configuration file fixed: access to network is granted to csrss.exe and services.exe; "System" hash checking removed; rule creation mask is fixed for 'ask' rule in the "Network activity" table.
    * Uninstaller changed to clean up Jetico Personal Firewall registry entries.

Now I will check remaining errors.

Please note: our configuration is still incomplete. So if you set JPF service start type to automatic please make sure that it won't catch one of important system applicaion: csrss, lsass, svchost et al.

One more note: installer overwrites JPF configuration. So if you want to keep it, backup please.

    Thanks for testing.

Ok, step by step: Install new Beta

    1. Backup your XML file (C:\Program Files\Jetico\Jetico Personal Firewall\Config\jpfConfig.xml)
    2. Deinstall old Beta
    3. Clean Registry and Files - only some insignificant Registry entries like 'Start Menu' are left over, files have been deleted all /System32/driver, Service was deleted.

Tip: uninstall.log file from JPF program folder contains command list for uninstaller. You can find the complete files and registry keys list there.

    4. Reboot
    5. Install the new Beta
    6. Copy backup xml file over the new one (C:\Program Files\Jetico\Jetico Personal Firewall\Config\jpfConfig.xml)
    7. Reboot
    8. Up and running, Jetico askes only for himself - Hash with a popup
    9. Check that the Service was set by Setup to 'manual'.

Shutting down now works also fine.

    Bugs:
Jetico does not remember GUI and View configurations.
Echo bug (Jump Rules) still present

It would be nice if tray icon change color if block all or allow all is selected.

Also if we select allowall via tray icon and restart computer it should return to optimal protection rule.

    :)

    Hi guys!
I found some bugs on v.2.0.0.6 beta.

    1. Even if the JPF logs DHCP datagrams as UDP's, such datagrams never match the IP rule for UDP protocol.
    e.g.
    IP rule with logging
    -Action : continue
    -Protocol : UDP

The above rule never matches DHCP datagrams.
But if I remove protocol condition on this rule, DHCP datagrams match and the JPF logs them as UDP datagrams.

    2. Newly created table with no rule will be changed into application table after restarting the JPF, even if that was non-application table.

    Thanks

    JPF v2 beta observations...

Here are my observations after installing Jetico 2:

    1. CoCreateInstance at the beginning after installation. Got around this by running as ordinary program (1. run jpfsrv.exe /unregserver 2. run jpfsrv.exe /regserver 3. run jpf.exe). After that JPF2 started ok. I was able to work with rules.
    2. Windows don't remember column places or widths where I arrange them. It remembers them over "session" but do not survive reboot.
    3. Process Attack - table and Network Access - table see duplicate entries (seemingly no difference with rules). Programs asks same permission two times.
    4. One time crash while reading JPF2 help. Unknown cause.
    5. While I am editing application group, when I press the "edit-line" button, Opens a window with: "Buffer overrun detected ... jpf.exe ...cannot continue...". I assume that possibly there is a problem with @ - character, because the executable names contain this character (they are Halflife-Steam paths eg. K:\Steam\SteamApps\XXXXXXX@XXXXXXXXX.fi\counter-strike\hl.exe") and these are only one with this crash. Adding a line with copy-paste works. Can reproduce always.
    6. Many "Blue Screens" with error "DPC ... yield ...". Lots of text. Powerdown only option after that. Happened always on my interaction with machine, in many totally different situations. Cannot reproduce controllable way.

After this I reverted back to JPF1 to see what happens with the "Blue Screens" DPC-errors.
Uninstall went ok. JPF1 install went ok.
After couple days usage everything seems to be like before, no problems at all.

Now, Unistalled JPF1 and installed JPF2 beta 2.006.
    Observations after that:

    1. After first reboot comes error again about "cannot contact to service" with different error window at start. But after second reboot program starts ok. No errors.
    2. JPF2 still forgets the window settings...
    3. Dublicate entries-problem seems to be gone now. I have removed duplicate entries and JPF2 don't ask about them anymore.
    4. Application-group editing specific lines crash still exist. Can reproduce.
    5. No DPC-errors ... yet anyway :)
    6. I had made my own rules to Optimal Protection in first beta version. Now loaded the backup from it to this version. Now always after reboot, JPF2.006 reverts back to original default rules !?

    Re: JPF v2 beta observations...

To 1: Not confirmed, is your service set to 'manual'? Is the service 'Remote Procedure Call (RPC)' startet?
    To 2: Confirmed
To 3: Echo Bug still exists when aplying a table as a Jump-rule to a new aplication network activity.
To 4: not confirmed, works perfect here.
To 5: confirmed for now :)
To 6: Copy your xml file over the existing and restart Jetico.

    More bug:
    - 'Auto Best fit' does not work in Tab Groups.
    - Mouse right click 'expand' does not work in groups

I tried to list active problems. Please correct me if I missed something
    1. Error 0x80070006 - please set jpfsrv.exe service startup mode to "Manual" for a while.
    2. Jpfsrv.exe service startup mode is set to "Manual". JPF configuration is not ready for automatic startup yet.
    3. "Echo" popup messages
    4. Windows and columns positions, "Best fit" flag are not remembered.
    5. Alffa: While I am editing application group, when I press the "edit-line" button, Opens a window with: "Buffer overrun detected ... jpf.exe ...cannot continue...". - reproduced
    6. Tommy: Expand in Groups by Mouse Right-Click not working
    7. Tommy: 'Auto Best fit' does not work in Tab Groups.
    8. appyface: VNC server does not work with JPF default configuration
    9. Alffa: Process Attack - table and Network Access - table see duplicate entries (seemingly no difference with rules) - we found it. Fix will be available in the next release.
    10. ddxylo: Newly created table with no rule will be changed into application table after restarting the JPF, even if that was non-application table.
    11. ddxylo: Even if the JPF logs DHCP datagrams as UDP's, such datagrams never match the IP rule for UDP protocol. - in progress. We found and fixed similar bug: IP rule with protocol=UDP and port=<any suitable> did not work.

Here is a picture from the error. Noticed also that I had one more line in that group that pointed to nonexisting file. That line did not produce this error. All those three does. And that error pops up when I press the "Edit-line"-button between the "+" and "X".

Tried to reproduce it here as you dicribed with a very long entry to a non existing file. I put this in:
Results in the same error as you discribed. With short entries, no problem.

    :) Hi Nail and everyone,

Sorry if I came too late in the thread. I emailed Jetico when Jetico Personal Firewall 2.0.0.5 Beta was released. I had a lot of problems with that beta version. I had to reformat my PC, when trying to go back to Jetico Personal Firewall 1.0.1.61. I know I may have done something wrong. But after reformatting, I'm staying with Jetico Personal Firewall 1.0.1.61 for now. Sorry Nail to email you guys again. I was just want to make sure that Jetico Personal Firewall 2.0.0.6 Beta will work better. I'm not very good with pointing out problems.

But, when using Jetico Personal Firewall 2.0.0.5 Beta. Everything went great. But after leaving my PC on for about 20-30 minutes, my mouse cursor would freeze. I would have to shut the power down on my PC, then power up my PC again. This problem would continue to go on. Also, when restarting my PC. Jetico Personal Firewall would always bring the main windows up. The windows with Configuration, etc. I would try to resize the window, then close it out. But when restarting PC again, the window would continue to show up and be back at it's default size. I saw in the thread that there is still problems with Jetico Personal Firewall 2.0.0.6 Beta. I don't want to use it just yet, if a problem may arise.

Without knowing the circumstances of your PC, i don't think that a format c:/ was nececarry even in your case. Jetico installes only about 8 files on your PC which can cause problems. You can delete them all after shutting down Jetico.

Anyway, Jetico v2 even - in the last beta version - is still buggy and has surly some uncovered bugs and incompatibilities to other drivers or software. Be aware of that! So stay with v1.
If you are a 'Beta Test Freak' make an image of you partition C; in worst case you restore it in 5 minutes :)

Your mentioned bugs still exist, there are problems with the service, GUI and view problems in Beta 2.0.0.6.

Finaly i can say on my PC the last beta is running well, but you may have some drivers/soft on your machine which cost havy problems with Jetico. Would be nice to get further informations.

Hi Tommy. Sorry if I'm not making any sense. I'm new to actually beta testing a firewall. Would you need my PC specs? I know some about computers. But I've never actaully made an image of my partition C. I have an HP PC. My new and old PC are from HP. I understand most of how an HP PC works. If making an image involves a software like, HP System Recovery. I'm basically out of luck. :( I need to get an external hard drive, so I don't lose my data (music, pictures, videos in "My Documents") I have a feeling PC specs would help...

    HP Pavilion a730n
    XP Home Edition
    Intel Pentium 4 530 3.0GHz Hyper-Threading (800 MHz Front Side Bus)
    512MB DDR1-400 PC3200 SDRAM
ATI RADEON X700 PRO 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express
    200GB Ultra DMA Hard Drive
TRENDnet TFM-PCIV92A V92 Modem (with Agere SV92PP chipset)
Creative Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit Internal
    DVD+RW/+R Drive
    CD-ROM Drive

You have a 200GB disc. Just make a second partition, use a software like Acronis True Image. Make an image of your partition C. If something goes wrong start the PC with the Acronis Boot CD and restore C:\ with the image file you have. That's it :)

But this only helps if you can't start anymore from C:\, if your entier disc went to hell.....

    Hi RR99i,
Using beta software (of any kind) can sometimes cause major problems, and would suggest you backup all your data. You have a DVD writer, so backup your music/pics etc (even if only a "copy")

Yes, I make sure once and awhile. I make backup DVD+R's of My Documents. It would be a little easier if I had an external hard drive. So in case I get a virus of some kind. Unplugging the external hard drive would save my files, when it happens. Tommy, is Acronis True Image and big software to download? My only option to the internet is, dial-up. I use to have broardband before I moved. Wish I could get it back.

But I just hope I'm welcomed here. I know what I say may sound a little off, but please understand. :) The problem with uninstalling 2.0.0.5 Beta, then installing Jetico Personal Firewall 1.0.1.61. I don't think I uninstalled 2.0.0.5 Beta correctly. But when Jetico Personal Firewall 1.0.1.61 was done installing, I needed to restart PC. Loading passed the BIOS was ok. But when it got the Windows XP screen. Right when it was done with loading Windows XP. My PC would then restart. This process would go over and over again. I'm not the biggest PC expert. Makes me feel good that my family thinks so. There would have been another way to go, then to reformat with HP System Recovery.

I've never had this problem with any other beta's, that I've beta tested.

Yes Acronis has about 60MB, but there are smaller aplications out there like Image for Dos, or Image for Windows on Terabyte. Both have arround 1 MB. Not much, and regarding Wilders a nearly bullet proofed aplication.

Again, before testing Betas, and more if you are testing Betas which have influence to your System like Jetico, i strongly recoment a Backup.

Thanks for the reply Tommy. :) I'll have to check out Acronis True Image. Would just backuping up files on DVD+Rs, help any? What I mean is, I use CDBurnerXP Pro 3 to back up my files. It does however take a lot of time and waiting to do this. This however, is new to me. I've never gone another route of backing up files. Would even getting a external hard drive. Used just for my pictures, music and videos, help?

All I know is that if there is a major problem with my PC, I reformat, using HP System Recovery. There are good things and bad things about it. The two options if gives you, you'll still lose your My Documents data. Maybe I shouldn't be talking about this. This all about problems with Jetico Personal Firewall version 2.

Installed the current beta on a Laptop with XP pro english and current hotfixes. Working fine basically except the known bugs. :thumb:

A minor inconvenience is that IP rules only work one way. Therefore 4 rules are necessary only to enable PPTP traffic (two rules and both allow incoming and outgoing would be sufficient or am I missing something?).

Applicatiom Checksum rules do not work as expected. When I create a checksum table that allows network access and network comunication and I assign an application with the checksum to it it does not seem to get processed (no log entries of the rules within the table). However the same configruation works fine for application rules. Is this a bug in checksum tables? If it is by design what is the reason for this behaviour? o_O

    Regards
    Stefan

Thanks for your help Tommy. :) If I have anymore problems with Jetico Personal Firewall v2, I'll post. But may just wait until the final version comes out. To use it.
