AOL Active Virus Shield...Even dead people can't escape AOL

Wow, what a crappy site, doesn't even open in Opera...
Still i can't see how this is related to AOL ActiveVirusShield...

 

Geez what a long story! I lost patience. Can anyone tell me whats the
morale of the story?

 

Yeah...that is a crappy site. I could not enlarge the font so I could easily read the article. I tried view/text zoom in Fx and nothing happened. So I went to Fx options and enlarged the minimum font size and nothing happened. The text on that size did not enlarge even when I made the minimum font size very large. I finally had to resort to copy/paste into Word where the font was a size I could comfortably read.

I had a similar problem when I discontinued AOL when I got broadband 5 years ago. I got a year of AOL free because every time I tried to cancel, I was given a free month. Then after a year of this, when I called yet again, AOL told me that they couldn't give me anymore free AOL and I said "Glory Hallelujah"! So, they said I was canceled. I went in to my AOL account (using Road Runner my cable ISP) one last time to make sure I was canceled. I was but I got billed for that month. When I called to find out why, I was told that checking my account that one time to make sure I had finally gotten canceled constituted USING the account and thus AOL was justified in charging me for a month even though they had really canceled me but I checked before the cancellation had taken effect. I put a dispute on my credit card and went through AOL hell for months ... I don't remember now if I had to pay that eventually or what.

I currently have Road Runner with AOL which I got FREE back in 2005. I was sorry after I got it but I have never tried to cancel the AOL part because I figured it would be very difficult even though it is free as long as I have RR. If I ever leave RR, then I have to cancel the AOL free account through AOL as well as cancel the RR account through Time Warner. If I don't remember to cancel the FREE AOL account through AOL then I will be billed by AOL for dialup. So, I hope I never have to leave RR as I can just see the mess canceling the free AOL account will be. It was a very stupid thing for me to get the free AOL back in 2005 but it was heavily promoted by Road Runner and I thought there were some services from AOL I would like. I like their radio stations a lot.

I wasn't told when I got the free AOL through Road Runner, local Time Warner, tier 3 tech support that I would have to cancel the FREE AOL THROUGH AOL if I ever left Road Runner for Earthlink cable over TW or got DSL or moved, etc. I found that out later. Had I been told that when I signed up for this FREE service that I would be billed for AOL dialup if I ever left Road Runner and forgot to contact AOL to have them cancel me from FREE AOL...well that is so convoluted and crazy...I would never have done it! I was told when I signed up by the Road Runner tier 3 tech in Honolulu that canceling Road Runner would cancel FREE AOL also which made sense so I went ahead and signed up ...to learn later that I may have put myself into a real mess if I ever leave Road Runner.

 

The relation to the product as well as the moral to the story is thus...don't take gifts from known cretinous sources. The post was just an effort to make folks aware of exactly who they may be dealing with.

 

So you AUTOMATICALLY ASSUMED that the AOL/KAV AV is garbage? Have you evaluated the software?

 

Lol, ppl are still spitting over AOL ActiveVirusShield just because it has AOL mark on it. Jokers...

 

Perhaps I need to be blunt. I'm an MCSE, and have 15 years experience with Windows systems. I know a little. I'm well aware of the quality of Kaspersky products. I hold a current license for KAV 6. The point that I'm trying to make is perhaps it is not such a good idea to accept "gifts" from sources as heinously behaved as AOL. I also wouldn't accept a free-first rate camel from Bin Laden.

 

Experienced engineers do not jump on UN-EDUCATED conclusion without factual data. ~snip~ So what proofs do you have to support your statement about the AOL/KAV AV? Time to show your cards or be labeled as an .....

 

Hey....I have a license for KAV6 also. I thought I wanted this freebie for my 98SE box but I get an error from the Kaspersky servers when trying to add the activation code. I contacted support and have no reply. Maybe it is for the best as there WILL be ads in AVS. I was going to let Proxo strip them. I hope everyone has Proxo because there will be ads.

 

The site opens fine in opera for me ,and the zoom function works ok too..im using 98se and 800x600 resolution.I dont know if thats any help though?.Its quite a funny story (when its not happening to you ) of course.Many ISPs are as bad as them though...great service when you want to join...absolutley hell to leave.

I don't have any stupid certificates to know whats good and whats bad. AOL AVS is NOT bad in any way. Well if you just click Next button at installation that's not my fault. But apart from that toolbar it's 100% KAV6 without any addons (we can't really count modified skin as core program modification).
But hey, if less users use it it just might remain more licenses for us that like this pack...

 

OK guys, I'll try this again since the point that I was trying to make is being completely overlooked. The reason that I mentioned my experience and certification was to show that I'm not a newbie. I'm not railing against the software, I'm saying that perhaps the source for this particular software should be considered due to its documented and persistent bad practices. I'm suggesting that it may be a good thing not to support such an organization, even by accepting a free software package regardless of quality.

 

I don't think Kaspersky Lab would go into any weird offers. They're security company after all, a well respected one. Thats why you can also uncheck the AOL toolbar.

 

I'd cash a FREE $1000 check from Osama in a heart beat! Winners research, analyse, then make a decision based on facts. Losers make assumptions and spread FUD.
