Yeah i know it won't allow malware to run but it's annoying to get popup about something 2 minutes after you already done bunch of other stuff and you have to think what the hell actually contained this crap. Thats why i prefer immediate reaction. But oh well i guess i'll have to live up with this...

RejZoR and I understand each other. We are both seeing the same thing and trust me we know how to configure an AV. I never would leave KAV or AVS at default config settings! Nor would I dream of leaving NOD32 at default settings! One thing I didn't mention though is that I do not use WebAV. I don't even have that module installed nor do I use the email scanner (my email is scanned by my ISP incoming and outgoing with Symantec Corporate and my other account is with dslreports and they scan all incoming). I always download an email attachment (even when expected) to disk and then scan manually.

So, I don't know what WebAV might do since that module, during beta testing of KAV 2006, slowed my internet connection drastically and I mean drastically, I don't use it. IMON web scanner did the same and I left NOD32 shortly after that was introduced. I can't say for certain currently, but I had NOD32 for two years and there was many a discussion about AMON's poor handling of zip files that had viruses and Eset was very adamant that would never change as they saw no problem with the sloppy handling. So, I would be surprised if NOD32 is now alerting on Eicar zip the moment you start to download like Bit Defender and McAffee Enterprise and Norton do.

KAV should alert instantly on the zip eicar downloads and also should alert the moment the mouse is placed over eicar.com before download even commences. I should not have to use WebAV to get this either. I want an AV with a real time monitor with teeth. Eset chose to put their eggs in IMON's basket instead and it appears KAV does the same in regards to zipped files that are infected. I far prefer BD and McAfee enterprise just stopping me at the gateway and that the stopping is being done by the RT monitor not some web scanner that ruins one's internet speed. Plus, why should I be allowed to resume download of eicar.com in Firefox download manager with no peep from KAV even though it peeped the first time? When I resume download KAV is silent. That is inconsistent behavior seems to me.

I had forgotten all this. I wish I had not decided to do those eicar tests as now I am reminded of how irritating this behavior is on the part of KAV and NOD32.

For me it was about 3 hours, though I've heard that sometimes it takes much more than that (1-2 days, or sometimes not at all)

You're right, only imon scans non executable archives!
But with default settings (compat mode) it doesn't seem to slow down my link a bit.

    Back to AVS
Every piece of software does something that some people will find annoying. With active virus shield this seems to be it, but I'll live with it since everything else is just great!

I'm not testing active shield, I'm using it ;)

edit: about 10 minutes to get the key here.

I got three activation keys almost instantly. I used the same email address each time. (Of course, I can't get any of them to work on my 98SE box and that is where I need AVS...I was just seeing what it was like on my XP virtual machine and was going to uninstall it after playing with it a bit. That machine the key works....the machine I need it on the key throws an error).

There is someone in the thread over at dslreports who tried six times, with different email address yesterday and today, and NEVER got any activation keys in email. He got disgusted and uninstalled it today and evidently when you do that there is an email address that pops up to send feedback so I am going to try that address for support with my key problem.

I experienced NO DETECTION delay with the AOL/KAV AV. Running WXP Pro SP1 with ZA Pro 4.5.594.000. At defaut settings, the AV will instantly detect EICAR.COM when downloaded to the HDD. EICAR.ZIP (zipped and double zipped) are instantly detected upon extraction.

When I bumped all settings to HIGH, then ALL EICAR files are instantly detected when downloaded to the HDD. Again, no anomaly to report.

Final score...A-. Highly recommended program. BTW, still haven't received my registration key.

I always prefer the original product , no modifications please!

You get what you have paid for :D :D :D
This AOL is free and you receive outdated and cut antivirus software :cautious:
Instead you can buy the original software and have all the protection , up-to-date and trouble free ! :thumb:

I saw my two emails this morning with the same registration key in both emails. Don't know why they are duplicates but this program will do fine for my wife's computer which will only occasionally be on the internet. Thanks to all.

Just received one key from KL. I may drop this in my old PIII and retest for speed. It's definitely better than the current NAV. McAfee is a little faster, but also consumes more RAM. This stripped-down KAV works great without ANY tweaking from the user. Good memory management and installation footprint. This is a brilliant move by KAV to penetrate the US market currently dominated by NAV and McAfee.

NOD32 is too complicated for the noobs. KISS. I'd buy AOL/KAV as is, for $10/year.

Has anyone figured out whether it's spyware though (actual AVS, not the dreaded toolbar)?

It has a much adware like behaviour with disguising EULA, big names of AOL and Kaspersky don,t make it acceptable to me while they rae using same techniques as many "so-called" adware vendors but one can only feel it if he is not too affiliated to a particular software , KAV in this case.

    see post no. 31 here.

    I totally agree with him.
