NOD32 and MDAEMON

Hi, has anyone had any experience with NOD32 and MDAEMON, i seem to have a conflict. Not sure if it is with the mail server per se or with its anti virus. Should i un install the anti virus that come with MDAEMON?

I have not used MDaemon. However, I would first try disabling the IMON portion of NOD32, since this could be interfering with the network functions. Go to IMON --> Quit (Unload IMON), then reboot.

 

Thanks. i have done this and it seems to be working. I would like to get rid of the anti virus that comes with Mdaemon though as the cost is rather high as opposed to NOD. Any ideas?

 

Looking through the MDaemon documentation online, it appears that you can enable/disable MDaemon's antivirus plugin by going to Security --> Content Filter --> Antivirus. If you wish to remove it from your computer entirely, I would think you could do that through Add/Remove programs or something similar.

I must caution you, however, that if you disable or remove the MDaemon antivirus plugin, your e-mail will most likely NOT be checked by NOD32. This is due to the fact that AMON (NOD32's realtime module) does not scan the individual files/attachments inside archives or mailbox files because it would incur too much of a performance hit.

Even if you had left IMON enabled, that would not catch viruses at the e-mail server level, either. The e-mail server uses SMTP, and IMON scans only POP3 and HTTP.

It is possible that a manual/scheduled on-demand NOD32 could scan inside the MDaemon mail files (depending on their format) and detect or remove any infected attachments. Even if you are able to do this without corrupting your e-mails, it would still not be as good as the MDaemon antivirus plugin, because the plugin can scan the messages as they arrive, as opposed to every once in a while.

My main point here is that you should not depend on NOD32 to catch viruses at the e-mail server level, since it is not designed to work with MDaemon. If Eset had a plugin for MDaemon, I would certainly recommend that, but alas, they do not. The plugin that comes with MDaemon uses a Kaspersky engine, so I would expect it to be pretty good.

Now, if you decide to go without the plugin, I would certainly recommend using NOD32 to protect that computer, anyway (aside from the e-mail server part of it). I would also recommend installing NOD32 on all the e-mail client computers, so that can catch any infected e-mails that make it through the server to their computers (plus, viruses from surfing the web, etc.)

 

Thanks for that. I have got NOD on all the client pc's, and nobody recieves mail on the server, so i am not going to bother with updating the Mdaemon anti virus( as i said earlier it is rather pricy).

I have nod protecting the server, so all should be fine.
