I never tried KAV, but this version is somewhat bad for web browsing. Even without http scanner this things shouldn't happen!

For testing purposes I went to some crackware sites and noticed that no warning was showed. After that I scanned my opera temp directory and AOL AVS found 2 trojans! Shouldn't they be found by real time monitor?

When I used nod32 30 day trial, even with imon _disabled_ I was notified by amon when a trojan was written to disk. Also with antivir free (no web scanner I think) I get a real time popup.

I know this is free for 1 year, and if I want a feature complete AV I can go and pay for KAV6, but should the real time monitor let those files slip?

~snip~. If the AV definition update interval is consistent with the full-version, then this AV solution is good enough for virtually all PC users.

SYMC and McAfee no longer have the pricing power to raise rate. The average price of a year of AV update should also drop over the next few years...$10 to $15.

I'm no AV expert, but I don't see the harm with stuffs in the temp file or trash can.

edited for content, lets keep it civil

KAV optimizes scanning by default by not scanning larger archives on download (If I understand correctly, a queing system is used to scan these files later on). If you would access the downloaded archives (unpacking / execution) KAV scans them real-time and should give you a warning.

I believe most AVs do not scan inside compressed files with the default settings. However, if the compressed files are extracted, then the scanner will detect the bug(s). This is by design to improve processing time.

I've tried this scanner for a while and think that it's very good and effective for average home users, Active Virus Shield's real-time file protection works very well for me, it actively detects/alerts all malware I've tried "on-the-fly" without any delay, no slow down.

Click on Service "tab" in KAV window and you'll see when it expires. It's 1 year license...

Hmmm...no code sharing for this FREE AV. The AV definition clock probably starts when you register the program. Perhaps a new registration key will add another year to the subscription.

I doubt it. Each activation code will be tied to one particular computer.

In KAV 6 it is set up in this way so Kaspersky can monitor whether the program is breaking their license agreement of 1 license/ 1 computer.

    As it states in the email sent;

Apart from ugly tray icon and terrible detection delay i actually like this one (very much).
I hope it'll stay like this forever. It's a great protection for users and very good promotion for Kaspersky Lab. Limited feature set will certanly bring more users to the full featured KAV6, thats for sure.

    Please elaborate "terrible detection delay".

NOD32 should also step up with a 1 year free promotion.

OK, set the record straight those in the know: does this or does this not have a real honest to goodness on access scanner?

Someone indicated in the reviews at Download.com that one must also get an on demand scanner like Bitdefender free. This has on demand scanning, right?

Yes, as with most AV's, it has a real-time running Guard (on-access Monitor) and an on-demand scanner.

Do you guys think the lack of quarantine is a bad thing?? If it deletes legitimate files from a false positive, that would sure suck! Also, does this have heuristic detection?
