Have the option checked to get all email tagged by Imon. Checked email confirmations: All email.
Emails received from Hotmail senders are not tagged! How come? Use Win XP Home + SP2 and Outlook Express.

    Hi Benvan45,

Hotmail uses HTTP mail, so the eMails won't be tagged by IMON, which only tags eMails received by its Pop3 module. Maybe HTTP traffic still is scanned by IMON, though...

But when receiving mail from whatever with Outlook Express, it makes use of Pop3 on port 110 and Imon is set to tag all email checked through this protocol.

Yes, it should be tagged. But that problem never happened to me since I don't use eMail tagging (I've enabled it but only for infected messages) . So I'm not of much help :(

I could suggest a uninstall/reinstall of Nod, but I'm sure there are better ways out there....

Have you tried receiving messages with another mail client, or from another mail account ?
Are the messages indeed scanned by Nod and just not tagged, or not scanned at all ? If that's the case, maybe your Pop3 server uses another port than 110 ?

Tested it myself with Hotmail. When a mail is sent from Hotmail as HTML, it's not tagged.......funny......it's received through Pop3. When mail is sent through Hotmail in plaint text, it is tagged ok!! This I don't understand, as both are received through the same protocol, Pop3 with Outlook Express.

I can understand then. Probably the tag is placed AFTER the /html tag of your message (at the end of it) by IMON, and therefore invisible...

Just sent some mail to myself with Outlook Express, but in HTML mode and the message is received with a tag! So, it beats me completely. From Hotmail in Rich text, Imon does not tag it. From Hotmail in plain text, Imon does tag it!
From Outlook Express in Rich text, Imon does tag it all right!!!!

Be carfeul, HTML and rich text aren't the same thing. I don't know for sure with OE, because I use MS Outlook, but I know there are different options for RTF (rich text) and HTML formats. So it is possible (just a guess) that when you use outlook you compose in RTF -which is properly tagged- and with Hotmail, it uses HTML so the problem remains.

Also, maybe you can try to view the source of your HMTL message (the one sent by hotmail) to see if the notification code is to be seen somewhere ?

Right, when writing a new mail in Outlook Express, I choose the Richt Text option which is also called HTML. It's in the options as: Rich Text (HTML), so I guess that this mail is made up as HTML, but what you say could be right, I'll go and try to view the source of the HTML message from Hotmail and see if I can discover something.

Mh, that gets more and more strange  it can indeed be HTML, I was just guessing, so my next idea would be erroneous / malformed tags or something alike in Hotmail, that prevents IMON's message to be loaded correctly in the hotmail HTML one.

Let me know if you find something in the source :D

Found nothing in the source!! So, and Hotmail has the option called: Rich-text Editor on or ff and when it's on, it's HTML.
See, almost every day there's something weird to be discovered. Indeed, there might be something screwy in Hotmail, but I really like to know what. HTML is HTML and it should make no difference through what program this mail is sent. It's the receiving end here, which is Outlook Express through Pop3 on port 110 with Imon set to tag 'all emails'

Just wonder why no Eset guys have replied yet, as they probably know what's up with this.

    FOUND :D

The Hotmail eMails have no <body> nor </body> tags, unlike the ones sent by outlook / outlook express. (I looked for mails sent to me by people using hotmail).
So IMON doesn't find the body tag to insert its message before, and therefore cannot place its notification message.
Definitely something weird from hotmail, not IMON.

Hope I was of any help

You are great, thanks very much. That explains it completely.

    You've done a good job this morning........keep it up! ;) ;)

It's not only Hotmail, I've sent a mail using webmail from my ISP (Demon) in HTML and it's not tagged either when receiving.

Still find it a big bug, as I am assuming now, that all Webmail programs, sending mails in HTML format, are not tagged by Imon?

Any Eset expert an answer to this please? This must be a known fact, so please state something about this, so I can move on.

Ok, all clear now! Thank you!

The only thing that makes me wonder, why AVG tags all mails......HTML and plaint text.....coming from Hotmail.

    Stated by Marcos:

IMON checks email and adds tag messages regardless of the mail client use, provided the email is received through POP3 on port 110. However, with certain html emails with incorrect html formattings it's possible that a tag message would not be appended though the email would be checked for viruses. It's not a good practice to rely on signatures as there are worms that contain faked certification messages telling they are clean. Check the IMON / EMON status window when receiving email to make sure email is actually checked.

Well, I still find it pretty awkward, as Imon is configured to tag emails, received through Pop3 on port 110, that it's not working all the time, depending on certain html formatting. I like to make use of that option, as it's proof for me, that incoming mail is checked.
Now I have to check the Imon status window, to make sure received mail is actually checked. First I must write down the number of files already checked by Imon, before starting Outlook Express and counting the emails received?
You have to be kidding completely. I know for sure that other AV scanners with the option of tagging mail, don't have that problem.
I installed AVG Pro just to test it again and it tags every mail received through Pop3 port 110......HTML or plain from Hotmail and other Webmail based clients.

One must be really crazy, having to count files in Imon before being able to check if received mails are scanned!!!!!

All I can say.......if the option to tag emails is in an AV scanner, I should be able to make use of it. It's an easy proof of security, that's why it's built in, isn't it?

If AVG is able to put a tag in a 'malformed' HTML mail......why should Imon be so shaky?
It's a bit too easy for me to accept, that the problem is being moved to so called 'malformed' HTML mails.

All I can say is this is how IMON is within NOD32, maybe version 3 will address this issue. I do remember when NOD32 didn't tag emails at all, what we have now is an improvement for those that like tagging.

    Cheers :D

Using tags to show mail is "safe" is a bad concept, it gives people a false sense of security. These "scanned by xyz" tags have allready been forged in spam/worm messages...
