Hello all! first time postin, aight i've been using sygate free for a while, but after symanctec bought sygate, ive been doubting if sygate can be trusted (not being updated and all) so ive been looking through this forum for a suitable firewall everyone seems to recommend kerio 2.1.5,outpost,jetico, and comodo. can anyone recommend which one of these would be good for using P2P clients(limewire, bittorrent.etc) and easily configurable, for like AV updates and using firefox (also please dont suggest zonealarm) any help would be appreciated!
I have exactly the same question and would also appreciate some guidance + do we need to worry that it's no longer being updated? Thank you!
Have you seen this one? https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=135983&highlight=updating firewall Herbalist said :
i agree with meriadoc. teh reason sygate had updates was for its IDS/IPS but it is still a viable firewall and if it works for you, stay with it. btw ive used outpost and looknstop with p2p and have had no problems but both are rules-based firewalls and sygate is easier.
Given the amount of malware using leaktest techniques to bypass packet-filter firewalls (by hijacking trusted programs), I would suggest that both Sygate and Kerio 2.x will provide little protection without a "system firewall" like Process Guard or System Safety Monitor (both of which can alert on/block almost any leaktest technique) unless very expertly configured. With more advanced firewalls, this extra software can be considered as an option, albeit a useful one. It is certainly true to say that firewalls do not date as quickly as scanners (where simply being a few days behind on signature updates can be critical), but the security landscape does change and a good firewall has to be able to provide some element of Windows process control now.
hmm thx for all these replies i was thinkin of trying out outpost cuz i tried kerio and i didnt like the fact that u had to make your own rules. but u guys kno if jetico or comodo is easy to set up?
ive never tried comodo do im not sure. as for jetico, some people say its hard others say its easy. im sure Stem can help with u set it up tho. theres an ongoing thread: Jetico making me crazy. and lastly theres outpost. its pretty easy. it has included rules for many programs and with the latest v3.5.x, it can automatically download/apply new rules for programs.
Amazing I have just changed from McAfee because the firewall would not let certain apps access the internet - so loaded command back on with System safety monitor and behind a router - computer run's a lot quicker and also now I am asked by everything that tries to leave my computer for permission.
