I am sorting out a 'fave" DvD video library and want to make copies of some DVD movies I have paid for.

    Any recommendations for copy software.
May even have to rip the movies if required to make copies that I can play, while keeping original intact.
Nothing illegal being done by me, but want good software, dont mind paying for same.

    Thanks

Use AnyDVD to remove the protection, then apply DVD shrink or DVD Decrypter to convert the DVD9 to DVD4.5. You can also maintain the same image quality by burning the content to two SL DVDs or one DL DVD.

AnyDVD can run in the background to rip the data in real time. Lifetime upgrade with purchase. Just copy the VIDEO_TS folder from the source DVD to your HDD with AnyDVD running in the background. Use Nero Showtime or equivalent to play the movie from this VIDEO_TS folder.

Hi Longboard and welcome to the dvd backup world.
www.doom9.org is one of the best ressource on the topic.

However even if you have legitimate rigth to backup your video, many copy protection exist. However those protected video still have to be played by normal player. The result is : Dvd studio still have to folow dvd standart but use perverted dvd standart.

Using such bad thing as volontairly corrupted video, bad sector, etc the video will play, however the dvd backup software will need to understand how the dvd is made may fail (wich is the purpose of copy protection)

RiptItForMe is a nice pice of software that act like a wizard to automate a nice riping experience with dvd decrypter, then process the disk with fixvts.

FixVts is a nice tool made to make the dvd more standart compilant, and thus have a side effect of annuling some standart perversion made by dvd studio.
the result will eb a video ready to be compressed using your choose of software.

RiptItForMe can then launch DvdShrink for your next step.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

This is going the transcoder route, faster but a bit less quality.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------
The other option is the encoder route in wich you decode the video ... just like a dvd player would do ... then reencode. This is a slower but more *proper* way to do so.

if you choose this route, you can have the every program do it's job path or the all in one integrated path.

If like me you choose the second option then i higly susgest you the software Dvd rebuilder. Dvd rebuilder comes bundled with a variety of free encoder and give you complete control on your encoding job. It can also support commercial encode like cce or procoder.

Cinema Craf encoder (CCE) is generally accepted as having the best result and being faster than it's competitor (it's all coded in optimised assembler).
The CCE SP version is expensive as it's designed to profesional studio. However a basic version is also available for 58$ for home users.

    Hi Longboard-

There are not too many pieces of software that I don't have numerous issues with, but with reguard to DVD (and other optical disk) writing I really like the combination of

    -AnyDVD
-Nero 6.6 Ultra Edition (Nero Recode component)

AnyDVD is constantly being updated to keep on top in this cat and mouse game of removing restrictions. It seeams like they have new (free to existing customers) versions about once a week, sometimes more.

Nero 6 has been around a long time and is still being actively developed despite the fact that the current (an not well received) version is Nero 7. I like it when the same software I've had for years works fine today.

This combo is lightning fast for a single layer DVD (about 15 minutes) for a double layer DVD it's more like 45 minutes, I think, (I don't actually use it that much, but I think 45 minutes is about right)

Has anyone heard of Prassi Ones? I read something that caught my eye that Prassi Ones is a burning engine that uses "fuzzy logic" so that it works with a large number of drives and does not have to be constantly upgraded when you change firmware or hardware. Mainly mentioning it because that phrase "fuzzy logic" - I'm gonna have to look that one up I guess.

Since the firmware seems to not be fully developed when the hardware comes out it is a good idea to check wth the manufacturer of your burner if there is a significant upgrade. To me, significant means faster, more compatible, or ability to write more layers. I've "flashed" my Sony DVDR a couple of times, and probably the other ones once. The Sony is much faster than it was.

    That's my vote!

If I need to maintain perfect video, then I use two DVDs or one DL DVD. Encoding takes too long, and still a compromise from the original material.

Most of the time, I transcode the data to one DVD if the compression quality is above 75%, and split the DVD if the quality is below 75%.

AnyDVD is a one stop shop. I use it with Nero Recode...about 11 minutes to transcode the VIDEO_TS data. The final step is to burn the VIDEO_TS data to a DVD using your favorite burn application.

You can also use AnyDVD with CloneDVD (transcode and burn in one software).

I'll put in my vote for DVD Shrink. Works like a charm.

Shrink will not decrypt the lastest generations of copy protection by Sony and others. Same with DVD Decrypter (great application until the developer was forced out of business by one of the anti-theft company).

    Furballi -

It sounds like we use the same winning combination: AnyDVD and Nero Recode. Maybe I oversimplified and it is using Nero Burning ROM to actually write the CD. But the way I had it set up I did it all from the Nero interface in one step, so the line is blurred to me. And since AnyDVD is really a background decrypter, that means one little interface for the whole shooting match after the initial installations.

Which Nero do you use version 6 or 7? Since 6 works, I've not tried 7. I'm not aware of what the differences are. 6 is such a good product, I had anticipated that 7 would be better, but lots of people seem to stay with 6, so in true sheep fashion, I stayed with 6 too.

    Just one more option:

1Click DVD Copy with the free DVD43 or the commercial AnyDVD.

Have Nero 6.6.0.3. It is possible to run everything from Nero. I also don't see the need to migrate to version 7.

I usually launch AnyDVD, then use Recode to "rework" the movie. Finally, I launch Nero to burn the data to the DVD.

    Hi- I'm using Nero 6.6.0.12

The way I remember It I just launched Nero once and it did the transcoding and burning more or less as a single step. I've used several different Nero 6 versions so I get a little fuzzy on what the differences are except...this version has a slicker looking customizable skin. Metallic colors! I usually don't change versions for no reason but when I upgraded to AnyDVD (which actually has some former nero employees i think) I decided I'd have the best shot if Nero were psuedo up to date.

BTW is it not possible to drag a discouraging word out of people around here? You have an open invitation to trash Nero 7 people, come on, somebody must have the dirt!

Nero 5.x was problably the best, but it does not support my burner.

I did not see any improvement in Recode with Nero 7. No need to pay for another bloatware when version 6 is 100% reliable with my rig. I'm still looking for a Nero 6 replacement. 140MB is just too piggy for a DVD burn application.

I prefer to preview the final VIDEO_TS folder before burning its contents to a DVD. Don't like to waste a Yuden disc.

What is better, Lean and slow, or fat and speedy?

I'm not saying you're not right, I just say don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Nero6 Ultra Edition - Well, it's free if you have it already, and it's cheap even if you don't.

I can tell you keep up on this topic more than I do, so I will be interested if you do find something you like better. I started down this road when the best you could do was to make a video cd - I soon found it was too hard. Then I jumped in with 321 studio's DVDxCopy. It was easy, but it was also a crap shoot. Anyway, now it finally seems easy and reliable...and now that the challenge is gone, I never do it anymore!

The free stuffs work, but too much trouble keeping up with the latest patches. ANYDVD comes with FREE lifetime upgrade. I don't upgrade to the latest version of ANYDVD unless I cannot backup a particular movie.

I see no speed avantage between Nero 5 and Nero 6. Well-coded software tend to be small, stable, and fast. There is little attention to efficient programming with today's powerful PC. In the end, hardware and software vendors are pushing bloatware on the consumers to force them to upgrade their rigs.

Well, often they use hardware incompatability, that's why the fuzzy logic of "Prassi Ones" caught my eye...

Software can be large in size but still streamlined. It may have a lot of features you don't use, but still have a well optimized central feature. I kind of like a slick interface. Yeah, it takes up room, but it adds to the XPerience!

I personallly prefer CloneDVD (by the same people who do AnyDVD) to Nero Recode, I find that its a little quicker UI.

Anydvd is great, even works on my copy protected Chilli Peppers cd :)

In the UK it is still NOT a crime to copy ANY copyrighted material for personal use, only from profitting from copying.
Companies can still file civil cases for damages, the handful of cases so far have ONLY been for people redistribution copies for £££ - as it is the only way currently that a company can actually calculate estimated losses.

Factoid of the day - did you know blank minidiscs and Blank Audio CD's (atleast in the UK) actually have a royalty licence built into the cost of the discs for copies of music?

When the DVD you are copying/downloading has been on a TV channel you receive as (at-least in the UK), you have a licence to watch ANY program/movie broadcast at any time...

I load AnyDVD. Decrypt with DVDdecrypter and transcode/burn with CloneDVD.

If that fails, I load AnyDVD then use DVD-Shrink.

This usually will copy any DVD. Although I had an issue with Charmed Season 4 Disc 1, where I finally had to choose the selected title backup, vs. the full backup in DVD-Shrink. Choosing just the 4 titles for the episodes. DVD works fine, just no menus. Starts on Episode 1, has chapter stops, when you reach the end of one episode, it goes right into the next one.
