Hello. I am by no means an expert on A/Vs. I am using NAV and my renewal date is coming up soon. I have been trialing some A/Vs just to see what's out there. I just got through trialing NOD32 version 2. It ran fine on my computer, 3.5 year old Gateway, AMD Athlon 700, 448 RAM, XP Home, and it was pretty easy to use.

Like I said, I'm no A/V expert. It's come down to either NOD32 or renewing NAV. I know it will probably be a little bias here ;), but can you tell me, if at all possible, which would be better protection for my computer and why? I could use some expert help. :)

Not really ;). IMO go for layered defense: go for NOD32 (best ITW antivirus available) in combo with a resident running antitrojan: TDS3, TrojanHunter or BOClean. Best of both worlds.

    regards.

Can anyone give my their thoughts on why NOD32 is better than NAV? PC-cillin might jump into the picture now.

I read a few of the threads here, theNOD32v1 forum, and even the "other anti-virus" forum, trying to find the answer to why I should purchase it over the other two I've mentioned. I'm not trying to bad mouth any product. I would just like to get as much info before I spend the money.

Nod32 is the best IN THE WILD (ItW) virus scanner. They have had 100% detection of viruses ITW for over three years now. If you would take a look at VB100 awards you would see that they have past with flying colors 23 times in a row. You can go to www.virusbtn.com and click on the vb100 award and then scroll down the page and click on most recent comparitive tests. When that page loads you will see a list of antivirus vendors on the left side of the page and different operating systems to the right of the antivirus vendors at the top of the page at this point all you need to do is click on a vendor and it will display the results for that vendor. If you click on the ESET vendor you will see they have had 23 pass and 3 fails. If you were to click on Symantec vendor you would see 21 pass and 6 fails. If you click on TrendMicro you will see they have had 6 pass and 7 fails. Also you may want to go to www.nod32.com and scroll down the main page and you see a topic titled PC911 NOD32v2 Independant Review. You can also go through this forum and find links to other articles on different sites about NOD32. Any questions?

All 3 of your 'possible choices' are top notch AV's, each having their own strengths and weaknesses. Most 'good' AV's now score 100% ITW detection.

And after purchasing/testing many AV products over the last 12 months, I have concluded that there is no 'best' AV.

    Choose one that;

    1. Provides frequent virus signature updates.

    2. Is compatible with YOUR hardware and software.

    3. Has low resource usage.

    4. Offers good/quick support.

NAV may give you more of a resource hit than PC-Cillin or NOD, but whether this will slow down your system depends upon how new your computer is.

Of the 3 alternatives I would recommend NOD + an AT program but I would suggest you try all 3 and then YOU decide which is the best for your system.

Irrespective of which one you choose, as long as you remember to keep up to-date with the virus signatures, you should be well protected.

I agree with Paul (and the others too :)).

Couple of other factors that influenced me in addition to Nod's great test record:

    1. Support. You won't find a better crowd than here. I never have, and I say that from once having been a sysop (= moderator) on a vendor forum on CompuServe, back when. I lurked here for quite some time before deciding on Nod.

    2. Footprint. Modest, goes about its business. Set and forget...until it nails a nasty.

    3. Uninstall. A snap. And unlike most uninstallers, it removes *everything*. When I had to uninstall NAV...the only nastier uninstall I've ever seen was ZoneAlarm Pro (3.X).

    4. Updates are pretty painless. And prompt.

    Hi Mannaggia

As Blackcat said, all 3 AV are good. My own choice when switching from my previous AV (VET - also a good one basically a slightly different version of eTrust) was influenced mainly by Virus Bulletin's awards which has Nod32 as having won most of their awards at present.
Another thing that influenced me was Nod's frequent automatic updates. Even though Norton has the auto update I've noticed at work where we use Norton that it is sometimes as much as a week between updates. For me a good AV is one does the job 100% and also can be set and forget (at least to a point). I like ESET's programmers attitude of making it a point that Nod catches all In The Wild viruses. It doesn't matter about 'zoo' viruses - they can stay in the zoo ;) I hope our posts have helped with your decision. Good luck.

NOD and Vet AV seem to be the popular choices for you Aussies!

I see that the Australian PC User Magazine that used to champion AVP/KAV is now definitely in the NOD camp.

    Would be interested if you posted any views on VET in a post we have going here on the Etrust AV where we have some questions referring to this AV;

I'm sorry if I irritated anyone with my questions, radicalb21 perhaps?, I'm just trying to learn as much as I can. Just thought it would be a good idea to get some info from people who are using NOD now and not just from reading old threads and articles.

    Thank you for responding.

    Mannaggia,

Paul et al, are kind enough to run this Forum so that idiots like me (I’m not saying that you’re an idiot) can learn from the experts. I’ve asked a lot of dumb questions in the past, even today, but when in doubt, I’d rather asked a dumb question and risk appearing like an idiot, than mess up my computer. I feel safe doing that here because the VAST majority of experts here are eager to help. Good luck.

    Hello Mannaggia,
I was a fan from Norton AV for many years and now I have been usind NOD32 since 4 months.
The main reasons I like it better is the fast scanning engine and because it uses very little ressources.
I can also mention this Forum which is absolutly fantastic
    if you ever need help.
Hope it can help you to make a decision.

Be assured you've irritated no one ;)

I for one applaud you for doing so - millions of people don't ever bother

You'll surely find them over here! And yes: it's a good idea to ask - as well as reading threads. Feel free to ask any question you want; you're most welcome.

    regards.
