the three free antispywares with realtime protection that i can think of are:

    Spybot S&D
    Windows Defender
    Spyware Terminator

Spybot's teatimer just prompts for some registry changes, no automation there. im not sure about WD but i dont care for it anyways. and Spyware Terminator has teh most options but im not sure if it automatic.

    I agree with theTOM,
Spyware Terminator is best with real-time.

    Durad,
By "automatized" do you mean aotimatic updates?
Spyware Terminator has automatic updates and a scheduler for scanning also. These features are available, but I haven't used them myself.

Did you know that Spyware Terminator was once on SpyWareWarrior's Rogue/Suspect list, but has been (basically) removed? The name is actually still on the list, but the reasons are removed and there is a "note" about it, which says they are no longer affiliated with spyware companies. I was going to try it, to go along with Spy Sweeper, since I'm totally unimpressed with this Windows Defender (at least so far) and can't get MSAS back again, but now I'm not so sure I want to.

Yes, Windows Defender has some usefull things, but talking about signatures, it is useless. [IMG]

I have just downloaded and test installed the latest version of ST and am impressed with what I see even though I am not necessarily interested in a real time scanner. However, eye candy/speed is not the be all/end all of this type of application and it would be useful to know how effective it is when compared to the other freebie apps in the same category. I currently SuperAntispyware as my on demand back up scanner but am wondering if ST is more effective. Does anyone know of any reputable reviews of ST lurking on the web?;)

    that's a compromise.

    My recommendation would be,

    Real time: Spyware Terminator
On demand: Ewido (sypware, adware, trojans, dialer, keylogger and worms)

On my experience with SA and ewido, SA is better than ewido for spyware, and ewido is better than SA for other types of malware...

And I also use ewido plus on my system, only for on-demand...

"nice" compromise is what I meant.

I go for ewido on demand because it covers a lot more.

That is right, Ewido + SAS are like AdAware + Spybot used to be.

You could also use Superantispyware free and Ewido free along with Arovax Shield (free) for realtime protection. I do like Spyware Terminator because of low resource usage. Arovax Shield also has an IE cookie shield and a Firefox Cookie shield.

can be found @ http://www.arovaxshield.com/, runs very light I like it a lot.

You can also integrate ClamWin Avti-Virus with Spyware Terminator (and it also has H.I.P.S)

I am trying to find something for old Win98 that have 128mb of ram. I installed Antivir, SpywareBlaster and need firewall as well as Antispyware because Antivir FREE version does not detect spywares.

But in general i am asking for WinXP systems.

its similar to WinPatrol but more simpler and it runs lighter too. it guards ur HOSTS file, IE settings, startup entries and a few other areas.

I would personally think Prevx1r the best free realtime protection from spyware. Or Sandboxie if you are worried about something coming through your browser.

    HJam72,

Being de-listed from the rogue antispyware list is not all that bad.
Zero Spyware was also once listed. That turned out to be reliable, good antispyware program.I used it for a year and had no trouble with it.

Regarding Windows Defender......Giant was an excellent program until MS bought it.
    Windows Defender=a neutered,watered-down version of Giant.:thumbd:

    Durad,

Maybe an older version of Zonealarm would work on the Win98 box?
