Backup to same partition

Hi,

i have 1 partition, the C: drive and when i boot via the rescue cd and try to make a full backup and save it on the C: drive (because i will burn it to dvd later on) than TI says 'cannot backup to same partiton'.

I read all over that it should be possible to do this ?

what am i doing wrong ?

The secure zone *might* be a possiblity, or make a new partition on your hard drive. Using a partition on the same hard drive to store images to (as you state), "to burn later to DVD", is not secure. The hard drive fails, so do your image files. As DVD burning is slow to create directly, why not invest in a USB external hard drive and store your image files on a drive that can be away from your computer and safe?

You can backup files and folders to the same partition, but you cannot create an image of your partition and save it to the partition you are making an image of.

You can backup to the same *disk* but this requires that you split your disk into more than one partition and image one partition onto another.

As Allen L suggests, this is not a good strategy if you are really interested in having a good chance of doing a restore. If your data is important you should look at a separate drive, external has its advantages, but even an internal one is still better than backing up to the same drive.

I backed up a friend of mine's laptop onto the same drive and then just used Nero to burn a DVD: (UDF if it's more than 2 gigs in size), but I agree, a second hard drive is the best choice. TI reads DVD's very slowly. You could probably walk coast to coast and back just in time to see your drive restored.

P.S. I think this is a great feature to be able to backup your drive onto the same drive for those who don't have a second hard drive. A DVD backup is still a backup. Very few programs can do this.

I tried to make an image in TI windows mode and saved it directly to the same drive / partition of which i made the image from, and that worked !

Is it normal that it does work in windows and not in rescue mode ?

You have discovered the answer to your original question. Windows allows creating an image of the C drive and writing it to the C drive. The Linux (Recovery CD) environment doesn't have this rather surprising ability. If you read the replies you received, you'll see that several people were not aware that, under Windows, TI can indeed create an image on the drive/partition that is being imaged.

Just be sure to copy or move the image to some other location before making the next backup image otherwise, the second image will contain the first one and be more than twice as large.

 

Hi jmk94903 and pierrelambert, thanks for correcting me on being able to backup to same partition. I can only assume that this feature did not exist the last time I tried it in an earlier version which is where my confusion comes from. That aside, this does not affect the fact that it should be safer to back to a distinct disk drive.

I guess this option has been widely neglected due to the fact that previuosly it was rather unintuitive and called for repeated settings in the Linux environmnt.

User friendly as it is now, it should be used more often for non-catastrophic restores of the system partition. I too am one of those who forget to use this handy option.

 

I agree. The option to backup to the same drive can be handy when there is no other drive or partition, but I never use it if I can avoid it and backup to a different drive as you suggest.
