    Hello.

This is my first visit to the NOD forum. (Removed the not neccessary information - jan). I just installed it a few hours ago and have been trying to familiarize myself with it. I haven't checked out the FAQ's at the NOD site yet. I do plan to get around to that, but I have a couple of questions I would like to ask here.

I set up a scheduled scan to run today just to see if it works. The scan started at the prescribed time, but no GUI popped up. I didn't realize it was running until I openned the log and saw that the scan was in progress. Is there a way to have NOD open during the scheduled scan like when a on demand scan is running?

I was using PC-cillin 2003 just before I got this free license to NOD. I've heard that NOD and PCC don't have the greatest unpackers, but that PCC's unpackers are supposed to be slightly better. What is your take on this? I keep hearing how important unpackers are, so this interests me a lot.

Why do you want to schedule a scan in the first place?

There is no need to schedule a scan because your system is always protected.

Other antivirus software does regular scans because it is trying in vain to pickup what it misses and to try and impress you the user that it is doing somthing it is not doing that is protecting you system.

One of the best features of NOD is there are no bells an whistles it just does what it is designed for and lets you get on with what you are designed for to work with the PC.

    Regards
    Alan

Hey, give me a break here. If you looked at the heading, you would see I am new to NOD. If this is the attitude of the people who hang out at this forum, I don't need it.

I've have always run a weekly scan of my C: drive with NAV and PCC. Just being causious. I didn't realize that you don't have to with NOD. Had no idea it was that great and nothing got through. If it is not necessary to schedule scans, why is it an option in NOD?

I also do scheduled scans with NOD32 v2 - the reason being is that the virus signature is updated daily and anything I downloaded/received yesterday may contain a virus that was not detectable until today. I know the resident protection would find it when I tried to run the infected file but I like to know before it gets to that stage.

Hello hobnob and welcome to the Forum,

If you want, you can do a complete scan of your P.C. every time
there is a signature update or once a week.

But like Alan is saying, there no need to do regular scan unless you suspect you may have a virus.

    Take care. :)

Hobnob: A reason to manually scan with NOD32's on demand scanner is that one can scan with NOD32 using advanced heuristics (from the command prompt) which AMON cannot do and the scheduler also cannot do. So there are reasons why one may want to use the on demand scanner and not just Amon. And a reason why you may not just want to rely on your scheduled scans.

As noted here from the documentation posted by Paolo in another thread:

"The new NOD32 scanner which comes with NOD32 v. 2.0 offers a new, powerful heuristic option to identify unknown Win32 malware (this option is included in the new IMON – Internet MONitor also). This new feature is very powerful, but on account of its nature it will notably slowdown the speed of the scanning process.
For this motive this option cannot be enabled directly in the environment of NOD32 scanner, but it can be used only if the scanner is explicitly launched with the /AH (Advanced Heuristic) option on command line."

But that would be with a manually initiated scan since you run it from the command prompt; not with the scheduled scan which would initiate a scan with the program's settings which do not include the advanced heuristic.

Additionally another way to avail oneself of NOD's advanced heuristic is to use the shell tool which Paolo pffers here: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=9776

With this tool one can scan an individual file using advanced heuristic from the right click context menu. It's a worthwhile add on. For example, you could use it to scan a file you've just downloaded with the advanced heuristic. Amon can't do that (for reasons Paolo noted in his thread: it would bog down the system if the real time scanner used it).

Anyway hope this is helpful to you and welcome to the forum too. :)

(edited again since I realized I couldn't tell my right click from my left, LOL. One of those days. ;) )

Thanks sig for that information. Thanks for the welcome also. :) I'm sure it won't be long before I'm feeling comfortable with NOD.

Hi Hobnob (Graystoke), I see you installed NOD. I am so sorry, I completely forgot abut your last IM and question over at DSLR.. (I have a problem that is really bugging me about how my port 135 got opened and I'm tending to forget other things). I see though that Sig has taken care of you. :) You are in good hands. Welcome to the NOD forum!

Well NOD32v2 just notified me that an e-mail I just received was infected with Win32/Magistr 29188 worm. I have never had an infected e-mail before. Not that I know of anyway. NOD did good I guess huh?

One question. When I open open the update window in NOD it states.......

    Statis..........Inactive
    Server.........www.esetsoftware.com
    Virus Signature Database Update................offer
    Program Component Update........................offer
    Last Update......................Unknown
    Version.........................1.481(20030812)

Is the Statis supposed to be Active? What does all the rest mean?

Well I was just notified of an available virus update. So I guess that part is working. :)

Hi Mele20. Don't worry about it. Looks like you have more important things to worry about. Thanks for welcome. :)

The status "Inactive" means that it is not currently downloading any updates or anything. During the beta period, I suggested they changed it to "Idling" or something, but.. for some reason they didn't. :)

    "Inactive" is okay.

    Best regards,
    Anders

    Hello,

this has already been discussed on the forum. If you wish to have the GUI appear on the screen when performing a scheduled scan, please schedule it as running an external application (nod32.exe). You can also add the /quit+ parameter so it will be closed automatically if no virus is found.
