"Test-Run" software - feedback needed

Sometimes I try new software and if not satisfied with it I uninstall it. But It is not possible to get back the original system registry settings always. So I was searching for some software which can help me on this.

I got to know about this software in snapfiles.com:

I also found the original site of this software later.

Is the ratings provided is justifiable?
As u can see only 2 users have rated to make it 5/5.
Also its popularity is not shown good means not many people are using it. I don't know whether these ratings are updated regularly or not.
So I need more feedback on it from the users of this software before going for it.
If any other software or better software is available for the same purpose please share it.

 

I use ERUNT for backing up the registry, good program, it has a register-optimiser aswell to 'defrag' the registry.

FirstDefense-ISR from Raxco. Read about it in the LeapFrog forum here at Wilders and at www.raxco.com .

It does what you want and more.

 

FirstDefense-ISR does not support win9x and FAT16/FAT32 file system.

ERUNT is also meant for NT platforms only.


I am looking for the software which supports Win-9x as well.

AND any feedback for Test-Run software ?

 

The thing about TestRun is that, you'll notice, it's only for Windows 98.

Although not quite as convenient, there's a few other options:
* You can use ERUNT to make manual backups of your registry
* TotalUninstall will scan your file system and registry before and after an install and allow you to undo all those changes (after doing a normal uninstall). Ashampoo has their own version of this, but I've not heard a lot of positive comments about it
* Registry tracers will allow you to make your own registry snapshots before and after and save "undo" files- jv16 PowerTools does this now, and Advanced Registry Tracer a good one.
* There are numerous other uninstall programs that will do a better job than the normal Add/Remove Programs. How much may vary; probably not as good as the options above, but certainly more convenient.
* There's always disk imaging software. If I'm going to do some serious tinkering, this is normally what I do. No matter what happens, this will put your system back exactly the way it was the last time you made an image. Acronis True Image usually takes me about 5 mins to restore an image, unless I have multiple 3D games installed (stuff like Half-Life 2 that take up a few gigs of disk space each).

 

The IDIOT proof method of removing an application is to image your OS partition PRIOR to installing the program. You can put the image file on another extended logical partition (same HDD). When done with your evaluation, simply restore the old image file and you're done. I also move my X:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data and MY DOCUMENT folders to another partition so I don't lose newly created data during testing.

Bootit NG can do all this, plus it is OS independent. The full trial version is good for 30 days. For best result, use Bootit boot CD/floppy to create an 8MB primary FAT16 partition at the end of your HDD. Install the Bootit EMBR and program in this partition.

I have a multiboot system, so I make sure that I have up to date backups, then pick an OS in which to do the testing, then restore the OS' drive after the testing.

My brother has a XP-system and he is eager to try both FirstDefense-ISR and Erunt when I talked to him about these softwares. He too often try new softwares and freewares.

ya... currently I am not able to try both the softwares as I have win98. May be in future ...when I shall upgrade my system to NT.

But ur post is still relevant in some way to the requirements and helpfull to those who run NT systems.

Many people comes to the wilders everyday and what is not relevant to someone at a point is helpful to others. That is the main charm of any forum.

And if the posts are relevant to the topic in any way then it could not be considered as a waste in a forum.

I've used TestRun for some time. It does the job quite well, but is limited to 98 and older. Testrun adds a subfolder to windows\command folder with several batch files. While it's not a full fledged backup program, it is ideal for test installs and for those who like to tweak the 98 registry. I use Acronis for full system backups and restore, but still find TestRun handy. It's so much faster.
Those who like to work with DOS and batch files may want to check it out as well. The batch files are easily modified and can be expanded to include more system files. I modified them to do a full registry and core system file restore at reboot.
