I have a subscription with ZoneAlarm Pro (ZAP) right now but it is running out soon and I received an offer to upgrade to ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite (ZASS) with a one year subscription for less than the cost of a ZAP one year renewal.

I like the email spam filtering and some other features of ZASS but I want to use NOD32 for AV because of its real time heuristics capabilities. I would turn off the ZASS antivirus portion completely in the ZASS program before installing or running NOD32. I wanted to post the question in this forum to see if anyone is successfully running NOD32 with the latest ZASS version 6.5.722.000.

Hello . I am not sure and I can never be since I am not using it . Generally it is not recommended to use this configuration . As a reseller of NOD32 you probably know ESET are currently developing two new products -> NOD32 AV v3 and ESET Personal Suit . This suit will have anti-spam , firewall , antispyware and all the feautures of the current NOD + more . These products will be ready in the next three or four months (until the end of the year) so you'll be able to use them and you don't need to pay another company for antthing . Currenty NOD32 protect you against threats . You can use the free ZoneAlarm for firewall and Mozilla Thunderbird for mail client . Mozilla Thunderbird has integrated anti-spam which is good . The best anti-spam I have ever seen is the one Gmail has . Gmail is the Google's mail . This anti-spam kills all the spam and it also check for viruses and automatically eliminates the mails with worms in them . I have never had even a single spam in my inbox , never .You can use it with POP or HTTP with any client you want . Mozilla Thunderbird is free on www.mozilla.com

You can send me a PM and I'll send you an invitation to Gmail if you wish ;)

Thank you for your information. I will have to test NOD32 and ZASS compatibility on another computer. I have a few other systems I could try testing them on. I didn't want to try it on my main system and have to deal with recovering my system if it didn't work. I am excited to hear about the future NOD32 v3 and the NOD32 Security Suite.

Thanks for letting us know . By the way , your computer seems to be well-protected : NOD32 , SpySweeper , ZoneAlarm ...... :D

Just get ZoneAlarm Pro instead. It has all of the same features as the security suite except for the antivirus which NOD32 fills the role for.

    Cheers,

My computers have not had a virus as far back as I can remember. I traditionally used just a Linksys router, ZAP, and NAV for security. Then the spyware and adware outbreakes hit my main machine a few years ago my system ended up with allot of it and I used Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware to remove it but that wasn't enough protection so I installed SpySweeper for active protection. I later added Spywareblaster and then McAfee Antispyware for keylogger detection and the McAfee VirusScan "potentially unwanted program" database detection threats.

I have been researching many different AV programs for the past two years and NOD32 kept coming up for me as the one to get. After annually renewing the subscriptions for years I finally dumped NAV 2003 altogether and I went with full two year NOD32 subscriptions for all four of my machines this past year. I had to carefully remove NAV by uninstalling then using the NAV removal program to get rid of the traces left behind. Now everything is working well and NOD32 has become my AV of choice for now. I never get viruses, spyware, or adware and all the security programs come up clean in their scans every time. The only ones that show any kind of activity are SpySweeper as it blocks tracking cookies in real time and the ZAP firewall alerts pop up once in a while asking for new program approval. The only thing that bothers me now is some pop email spam gets past the spam email filtering servers of my ISP which is the main reason I was considering using ZASS with spam filtering instead of ZAP.

As long as NOD32 works well for me in the future I will be recommending it to everyone that I know. I also like the efficiency of NOD32 compared to NAV and the other AVs. It is almost like you are upgrading the speed of your current computer without having to buy a new system.

Another machine that I updated today with NOD32 after removing NAV 2003 was "supposed to be completely clean". I had run NAV 2003, online scanners at TrendMicro, McAfee Stinger, different antispywares. I think I might have even run Kaspersky's free online scanner sometime last year. Today I ran and in depth scan with NOD32 on the whole system and on a data only drive where I was keeping older files left over from the hard drive of the previous machine from at least five years ago and NOD32 found an attachment in an old unused Eudora email attachement subfolder file with a Win32/Dialer.V variant in it. I think it was a file from an spam email a long time ago. From the file name it seemed like it was an adult related spam attachment that had downloaded before the ISPs spam filters were running and it been sitting there and had been forgotten about. I have run so many different antivirus scans on this computer from different companies and the fact that NOD32 found something that no other antivirus scanner ever did is amazing. My confidence in this product has already jumped way up.

INTERESTING UPDATE: I decided to do my own testing for this question. I installed NOD32 2.5 on a system that already had ZASS v6.5.722 installed on it. However, first I turned off the ZASS antivirus program and disabled its on access real time scanning just to be safe. I also turned off the antispyware feature in ZASS before installing NOD32 and I turned it back on after the successful NOD32 installation. Everything seemed to worked fine with NOD32's default settings. My ZASS installation was set to its default settings except I had previously changed it's OS Firewall settings to be set to Program Control after I had been getting constant annoying pop ups alerting me that Webroot SpySweeper (which I also use) was trying to modify the Hosts file. With NOD32's AMON and all other protection running I was able to run a full in-depth analysis scan on that computer with no problems. With real time access scanning and many other AV scanning features such as email disabled I was able to do a manual scan of my system with the ZASS antivirus engine and I saw no problems. I even tried enabling ZASS real time antivirus on access scanning for a minute and saw no problems occur but I disabled it soon thereafter since I didn't want to cause any unforseen conflicts. I can not recommend that anyone use ZASS and NOD32 at the same time since I did not do extensive testing but it might be something that could be done as long as the ZASS real time on access scanning was set to be turned off to avoid any unknown conflicts between the two real time scanners. If I was going to install ZASS on a system with NOD32 already installed I would be very careful and shut down ALL the NOD32 real time protection and temporarily disable all the modules until I was able to successfully install ZASS and turn off the ZASS real time antivirus protection and its email antivirus scanning. I think this procedure of disabling and enabling each program before upgrading either one is also something to be aware of or it could potentially create problems during the uninstall or install of an upgrade. I am not recommending what I described here but it is interesting to know that with the right methods it is possible to get it to work. Regardless of the lack of conflicts I experienced during my short one day testing with NOD32 and ZASS for most people who want to use a ZA product it would be recommended to use the free ZoneAlarm firewall or the more advanced ZoneAlarm Pro (ZAP) products to avoid conflicts while using it along with NOD32 antivirus.

I also use NOD32 and ZA Antispyware Edition and they get along great. I wouldn't see a problem running the ZASS as long as you don't enable the antivirus part of the program. I like the Antispyware edition since it is a lighter version of the ZA and at a greatly reduced price with nearly all of the features of ZA Pro.

Hi, just letting you know that I have been using NOD32 with ZASS for a long time(1year+) and there are no problems with it except with the feature of IMSecurity in ZASS being not working due to some winsock issues with NOD32(whatever, as it is too technical for me).

However, I not sure about the antivirus in ZASS working with NOD32. I would advised against that.

Also, ZAPro is not the same as ZASS. Please do not give out information unless you are certain or you stated that it is your opinion. The difference between them is that ZASS has the extra features: Antivirus, Anti-Spam & Anti-Phishing, IM Protection and Parental Control

However Antivirus is of no use to you here and also with IM Protection(or IM Security) due to conflicts with some LSP stuff so you can't really use that unless ZA fix them.

CyberMew, thank you for the information about ZASS and NOD32 working well for you more than a year. I hope you didn't think that I made a mistake posting about ZASS and NOD32 instead of ZAP. I have ZA products installed on at least ten of my computers. I recently tested NOD32 compatibility on a notebook running ZASS 6.5.722. I have installed ZoneAlarm on more than fifty systems and have been using ZA for more than five years so I definitely know this program. I am however new to using NOD32.

Regarding the differences between ZASS and ZAP, I am well aware of the differences that you mentioned or I would not be considering using ZASS at all. Although it is not the only difference, the most important fact about ZASS compared to ZAP is that ZASS has an antivirus program built into it. I was unaware of ZASS's IMSecurity component incompatibility with NOD32 though. I think my opinion was clearly stated and the important thing for people to remember is that running two active real time antivirus scanning engines at the same time can be a recipe for disaster. This is especially true if you consider that that AV engine can be modified and updated automatically at any time and cause an incompatibility with the other AV program that it never had before. So when I recommended ZAP instead of ZASS for most people who want to use it along with NOD32 I think that was advice of extreme caution so that NOD32 users don't think that they would always have trouble free operation with ZASS (even if the AV component in ZASS is turned off since it could change after an upgrade). Regarding using NOD32 with ZoneAlarm Pro (ZAP) , I have never had a problem with this nor have I had a problem running ZAP with any other AV program I have used at anytime in the past.
