    Hi all,

is this a known bug ?.

    a) created a file (167 GB) with Cryptosuite and copied to an USB-HDD
    b) starting Perfectdisk to defragment the disk
    c) after 20 hours (!!!) it still remains at 28%.

Is there any limitation regarding the size of the file ??

    Regards
    Dieter

Hi Dieter, A couple of things come to mind.
Fisrtsly how much space was left on the USB drive after transferring the file? Most defraggers require a certain amount of space to achieve the defrag properly
Secondly, If the usb drive had been defragged before moving such a large file to it then by copying the file to the drive would automatically defrag the file as it woild take up one contigious space.

I am not sure if there are any limitations on the CS created file or for that matter with Perfect disk and the CS type of file. It may be a good idea to also ask Perfect disk support about this problem.

If there is any file compression involved, the Perfect Disk has to decompress and recompress as it moves the data. Not sure I'd bother

    Hi,

    additional information:

60Gb free disk space, this is 22 % of the disk.
If I start the XP-Defragmention I will get the following message:

    a) This disk needs to be defragmented
    b) after 5 seconds the operation stops: "cannot defragment the following file: XA.CSE".

Ok, it is not a big problem, just wondering if Cryptosuite stores the files in a format Defragmentation tools cannot deal with ?

    regards
    Dieter

Dieter, I guess this is CS's file protection at work. Your file is encrypted with a passphrase, the defragger probably needs to inspect the file at a low level to move parts around, therefore it is logical that this cannot be allowed for security reasons.

Hopefully an encryption expert or Jason can enlighten us. :)

No. I just tried it. Worked fine. Did it with a 649 Meg file. I really think the problem is trying to move around a 167Gig File with only 60 Gig free. Perfect Disk could care less what the file is, it is just moving clusters. UNLESS, the drive is compressed, that might be a factor, because then I think it does have to uncompress it to move the pieces, and recompress.

    Hi Pete,

this is why I want to see the ability to split files in the next version of CS.
167 GB is a monsterfile, indeed. I will try to decrypt and create some smaller files again.

    Hi Dieter

Had a chance to talk with Raxco folks today. They said indeed Perfect disk should be able to defrag a 167Gb file with only 60gb free. However as to how long that would take, it might not be a bad idea to start it before going on holiday:D Smaller files for sure would be appropriate.

    Hi Pete,

thanks for the information. Just bought a new machine AMD 4400+, 2 GB RAM, 2*250 GB SATA.
Start again and will see what happens. My next holiday starts on 1th Sept. for 4 weeks. Good idea to start the defragmentation at this point.:D
