    Hi all,

I just want to let you know that I just sent out an invitation to some companies asking if they would like to participate in an on-demand test of June, in which only products which are not included in our regular tests for various reasons can take part. (of course also for free). the invited/selected products are:
    Ahnlab V3Pro
CA eTrust (with VET engine only)
    ClamWin Anti-Virus
    Comodo AV
    Ikarus Virus Utilities
    Jiangmin Anti-Virus
    QuickHeal Anti-Virus
    Rising Antivirus
    UNA (Ukranian Anti-Virus)
    VirusBuster Professional
    ViruScape

This is just for information, not for discussion ;). If everything wents fine, I think to be able to do such test very soon and to write/upload it within 3-4 weeks. (Hoping that at least 8 agrees to participate).

Would be interesting to see how these perform. But what happened to ViruScape? They did not want to be included in the test?

Their product is not ready yet, so they refused to participate at this time. Same with Comodo. They will participate probably next year, when their products are ready/improved.

    Hi, IBK

What about Kingsoft AV, another big vendor from China? Here are two email addresses you might feel interested: info[at]kingsoft.com,support_globe[at]kingsoft.com

We are working on ViruScape 2.0 full-time now and adding so many new technologies, it wouldn't be worth having ViruScape 1.0 tested, as 2.0 will be 100% different. ViruScape 1.0 is still being updated definition wise, but all current users who bought ViruScape 1.0 will be upgraded to 2.0 for free (and the licensing will stay the same, yearly fee-wise).

VS2 will have a greatly improved heuristic engine along with a HIPS system, new interface, rootkit protection, and dozens of other features, so, for now, it is not worth having VS1 tested.

We will keep everyone (and IBK) updated when VS2 Beta comes out in some months :)

Kingsoft does have new version coming out every year or year and an half. But it's for its Chinese version. I am not sure about the English version, which seems dead on their website, as you said.

Since F-PROT 6.0 beta will be out very soon, is it possible to test F-PROT 3.16f and F-PROT 6.0 at the same time, with a special note stating that F-PROT 6.0 is still in beta?

Is it also possible to include both KAV5.0 and 6.0 for the test?

    In http://www.terainnovations.com/index.html, it says:

Dr. Montage James - Rep. of Panama:
II am a board certified clinical psychiatrist & acupuncturist. Many times, what is rated # 1-2-3 is not always the best. I have downloaded and tested every available Anti-Virus software and not one of them would scan with my platform, 2000 Server, or even update. ViruScape 2006 worked 100% and cleaned many types of viruses others missed. I trust ViruScape 2006 100% to clean my PC of any virus I may get hit with. I would trust my life with this software. Don't be fooled by reviews & ratings, Don't be penny wise and pound foolish. Protect your pc today like you would protect the lives of your own family. Purchase ViruScape 2006.

Since ViruScape 2.0 beta will not be available until some time later, why not let the users know the power and strength of ViruScape 1.0? I understand 2.0 may be very different, but I think you should be proud of 1.0, isn't it? Why not give 1.0 a chance to be tested? If you insist that we should wait for ViruScape 2.0 beta, do you imply that ViruScape 1.0 is not good enough?

I think every version should has its own strength, otherwise, it won't be out for a release. It is a good chance here for users to know more about new antivirus software, so that people can have more choices in addition to the top notch AV.

no, that is not possible in this test. This test will only include products that are not already included in the regular tests.
F-Prot 6 will be included when the final is released.
KAV 5 and KAV 6 have the same on-demand detection rates.

Congratulations, see you in hell.

I really don't know how a company (which should have some business sense) can quote such hilarious "reviews" even if they only reflect a personal oppinion. I mean hey, quoting some nice feedback is of course welcome, but in this way it becomes absolutely silly and looks foolish for professional people. "I would trust my life with this software"...

Every other antivirus has many other components than just a scanner, and ViruScape 1.0 does not have much more than a scanner+guard, so, we would much rather wait until 2.0 to test it. We stopped <ALL> advertising for VS1 and are focusing on VS2. We'd rather show it to the world as a top-of-the line AV with all of the bells and whistles as the others rather than just a scanner.

If you wish to see the power of VS1, download it and test it :) Power-speaking, VS1 was the county jail, VS2 would be a maximum security prison.

The strength of VS1 is that it is a fast and low-impact scanner, but that is not everything that an antivirus needs.

Inspector Clouseau - The purpose of that review is him stating that it works on platforms that others dont. I'll see if I can get the "life" quote removed, but thats what he wrote, and if others see that someone is very emotional about a product, they may look to it as well.

Oh sorry, I have misunderstood your test. I just think you are testing "not already included in the regular test" alongside with the regular ones. :p

Of course I can download it and test it, but I don't have any virus sample on hand. My machine is clean and is free of virus. How can I test the detection power of ViruScape 1 if I have no virus sample on hand? o_O:eek: I am just an antivirus software end user. I can test for bugs, compatibility issues, but I can NEVER test the detection power of ViruScape 1. That's why I have to look at the detection rate testing carried out by independent parties, like VirusBulletin or the testing carried out by IBK.

    What our engine developer's said:
IBK's tests test a range of malware, a lot of those types no longer are a threat to users. There are a good deal of flaws in VS1 which prevent it from being able to adequately scan all of these exotic virus types. IBK's test would quickly show these flaws and it would appear that the scanner is very sub-par because these types of malware would throw off the percentages. We have already fixed most of these problems, and are currently developing even more technologies, like a sandbox based generic unpacker+heuristics module which will improve VS2's detection even more. It's not that we are not confident in VS1 for mainstream use, VS1 just has flaws in detection of some virus types which are prevalent in antivirus tests.

How can you be confident when you do actually know that it has flaws in detection of "some" virus types? I mean it's nice to see that you guys having a lot of optimism for v2, the question is only will this all happen in this way as you thought/wish. Competitors aren't sleeping and in most of the other av companies you have some serious good guys working with years in practical av development/virus research.

to summarize/simplify what terainnovations says/said (and then back to topic):
    1. Version 2 will be much better than v1.
    2. ViruScape 2.0 will be a near-full rewrite of ViruScape 1.0 - v1 have already uncovered dozens of highly critical scanner flaws which cause detection rates on some virus types to be incredibly low.
    3. version 2 will have features that current v1 does not have, incl. hipsetc.
    4. v1 does not have an emulator
    5. v1 has problems, due that TI ceased advertising ViruScape (but is still available online ;)) and are notifying users of the potential security holes
conclusion: ViruScape v1 is currently not good at detecting viruses/malware and would maybe score low (and is advised to do not use it yet), so better waiting for version 2 which will be released in [near] future, and then review it.

This has gotten off topic, but just in 'closing arguments':
The flaws in detection are not in mainstream threats (i.e. - macro viruses are basically dead, and that is one of parts of the scanner that was flawed, but now corrected). As IBK stated, we aren't working on telling anyone else about ViruScape until 2.0 comes our or until we finish fixing VS1. We also have good guys working for us with years in av development (just because you don't know someone, Inspector, doesn't mean they dont know what they are doing :))

We are approaching things differently than the other companies, as what is currently out there is just not adequate. If it were adequate, we wouldn't have near-panic from viruses on a year-to-year basis. Just wait and see -- because speculation isn't going to get anyone anywhere. You all will be some of the first to hear about VS2 when it is ready.

Every antivirus software has flaws and bugs. That's why, the developers of antivirus software release bug fix versions or maintenance packs occassionally. KAV, NOD32 and Bitdefender are favorites of most of the end users, but you can still see KAV, NOD32 or BitDefender release maintaince bug fix or enhancement versions occassionally or as when need.

The new 5000 engine of McAfee was postponed, because bugs were identified during the RC stage. All other antivirus software also release bug fix version occassionally. But still, they are submitting their product for testing. Do you ever see an antivirus software that never release maintainance or interim bug fix version? Do you ever see an antivirus software that is perfect and no bug fix version is required?

If flaw is the reason for not submitting the software for testing, there would be no testing at all and forever, because every antivirus software have bugs.

I am sorry for being off topic, but I just want to say that having flaw should not the reason for exclusion from testing. However, I do respect the decision of TeraInnovations.

mhmhm, well, I will not comment this in detail, but I admit that I have looked to VS today, and I would currently not say that the flaws are only in "non-mainstream threats"... - but I will wait for v2 and review that one in detail when ready ;).
if a company does currently not want to participate, no one can force to do, its their decision.

Let's atm concentrate on those products which will partipate in the june test ;).

Well, Chubb, then please wait until we release our 'Service Pack' to fix these bugs which will vastly effect our results. This test is scheduled for June, and we will not have it done in the next 3 days, so, I guess we'll just have to wait.

Yes, IBK, there are also flaws in our actual executable parsing and code analysis which will affect virtually every detection, making our definitions much less generic than they should be, missing permutations of viruses and variants of viruses for which we don't have samples for.

Thank you for your interest, and we won't let you down :) We are also totally redesigning the interface and adding more advanced options, as-per the request of all of you advanced users, but still having a very simplified 'Easy' interface as a second option. It'll all be ready when its ready :D
