true image with DriveCrypt

I am using Acronis True Image V9.0 Build 2302. I am using SecureStar Drivecrypt to protect sensitive data files. I have created an ecnypted partition(O) with the sensitive data files and am using Acronis True Image to back up (O) to an encrypted partion (H). the backup operation terminates almost immediatley with the following Acronis error message: operation with partition 4-6 was terminated. Unable to create volume snapshot (0x70021).

Does anyone have any thoughts on the error message. Should True Image accomplish what I am trying? If so what am I missing? If not, does anyone have suggestions on how best to accomplish my goal? What level of security is there, if i simply password protect my True Image backup file with a sufficiently generated password?

 

My guess (means I don't really know) is that DriveCrypt is holding onto the drive and TI can't do what is necessary to freeze operations to create its snapshot of the in-use sectors.

Although it isn't automatic I encrypt my sensitive info with PGP. It does mean manually decrypting when I want the info but I don't need it all that often for it to be a concern. For me this works, for your use it may not. You can also use XP PRO's encryption but that is only secure if you aren't logged onto the machine. I would imagine that if you used XP PROs encryption and used TI's password you would be pretty safe if your image fell into the wrong hands unless it was the CIA.

Only you can decide how much protection you want.

 

I'm with seekforever's take on the reason as I wouldn't be at all surprised if those two programs don't "play nice" with each other. You may have to use another drive to hold TI's Secure Zone if that is what you want to do.

 

suggestion -
unmount the encrypted partition, so your computer just sees it as a file. Backup the encrypted file as an encrypted file.
this way, SecureStor won't (should not, I think, not sure though) hold control of it.

second sugestion -
do a FILE-based backup, rather than a partition-based backup.

Also, see my other thread on encryption; not too many (if ANY) people seem to be interested in encrryption, on a drive-based level.

With recent awareness of items like the stolen VA data, Aetna's stolen data, Fidelity's stolen data (two of these instances being hard-drive-based notebooks), perhaps interest will increase.

My goal is to find a reliable method of recovery in the event of disaster, ; working with encryption from a backup perspective is harder.

Try the above, and post your results.

Please take a look at this thread about backing up encrypted data.

Could you please clarify if it is possible to backup not encrypted partition? Also try to create backup of the encrypted partition when booted from Acronis True Image Bootable CD. Please note that if a file system is not supported, Acronis True Image creates sector-by-sector image of the selected partition. In this case the image size will be the same as size of the partition.
