Am resurrecting my old Win 95 notebook puter. (Want to leave it at my aging Mom's house so as to check e-mails when visiting) I got the internet connection working, but I'd like to install a firewall. Am having trouble locating one that is Win 95 compatible. Filseclab claims to be, but I couldn't get it to work. Any suggestions anybody?
Filseclab runs on Win95, how well I don't know. Filseclab Personal Firewall Professional Edition http://www.filseclab.com/eng/download/downloads.htm use this site to confgure filseclab , see page 7 and post 165 of that thread! https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=92710 Use this site's shields up to test filseclab and see if it is stealthing, some rules may have to be changed to " out " to pass the tests! http://grc.com/
I put this on a friends 95 laptop a couple of years ago and the've had no problems with it. Very easy to configure and very similar to Zonealarm, and quite light too. ____________________ http://www.omniquad.com/pfirewall.htm StevieO
Thanx guys for the response So they claim, however I ran into problems. Hours of research, downloading / installing updated winsock, various .dlls, finally gave up. Shame, 'cause I'm familiar with Filseclab & it's config, and liked it a lot. @ SteveO: Will check out omniquad Need something low on resources. Free /cheap preferred.
I would close the open Netbios ports by renaming vnbt.386 or following these instructions: http://www.grc.com/su-rebinding9x.htm If I was going to use a vintage firewall with this vintage O/S, I would choose AtGuard 3.22.
Have a look at the Security section of Lightspeed's Win 95 page; http://www.oldfiles.org.uk/lightspeed/lightspeed95.html According to him, one of the older versions of ZA will work OK.
Thanx Togg for the link. Filseclab is SUPPOSED to run on W95, but I suspect it only runs on OSR/2. ZA 2.6 installed with all kinds of errors (missing .dlls, etc), but upon reboot it worked OK. Finally settled on Kerio 2.1.4. Working fine (but crashes on rare occassions). To round off security, downloaded/installed F-prot AV DOS (I needed something lightweight). Wrote simple script for "one click" update of virus def.s, works great.
Buy a router with NAT protection + SPI firewall (the onliest which will really work and do the job but note it won't work on dial-up , only on Ethernet) Install F-prot AV which will work on it and make sure it is updated . And don't stay online too much with it because it is too risky
