After unsuccesfully trying to write an image to DVD-RW I now see that packet writing is required to accomplish this.
Does this then mean that if I create an image onto a DVD using Nero InCD, I will not be able to restore that image from the DVD unless Windows is installed and InCD active ??
In other words is creating an image on DVD pretty much worthless as a backup in case of a catastrophic disk failure ? :thumbd:

    Hello mikespa,

No. InCD is only required to preformat the DVDs (use UDF file system 2.01 or lower) and to burn the image.

In case of disaster recovery you only need to boot from the Acronis bootable rescue CD in order to restore the image from DVD. Note that you will need to insert the DVD containing the last image volume first and then follow TI's instructions for susequent disk insertions.

    Regards

I'd reommend avoiding packet writing software. It's notoroiusly unreliable. Search the forums on CDRLabs, CDFreaks and many others...

    Hi mikespa,

Even though I have not successfully restored any backup images using acronis TI, I believe you've just missed out an important step.

That is to create the Acronis True Image BootCD.

With this BootCD, you'll be able to boot up the system. From there you should be able to restore the images.

Thanks all for the info. I formated my DVD's with Nero InCD 4.3--- and Acronis nicely created an image involving 3 DVD's which show backup files 1 thru 7. After making and booting on the Boot CD and inserting DVD number 3 I can not select individual files to restore and then I get an error that the backup is corrupted. Basically the same happens when I try to restore using the normal Acronis under Win XP. Perhaps the is the problem. I must confess my ignorance on the UDF 2.0.1 or less requirement.

What the tazdevil said is very true. It is one way to lose your hair fast :D :D . Plus it is very slow to backup to and restore from optical media.

Get yourself an external usb drive. You will be much happier.

I read somewhere that if the image is split into multiple files, you'll need to put all the files of the image into the same folder. Then you can restore the individual files.

CDs & DVDs are an especially great technology for backup purposes because

    1) they are two slow and

    2) the burn type (whether write once or rewriteable) that one makes on one's PC -- as opposed to the pressed type from commerically imprinted CD and DVDs) turn out not to have a data integrity lifespan longer than magnetic media.

A harddisk will serve most better as a backup medium than CDs or DVDs

    imo, sh

Well, the bottom line seems to be that I need a usb harddrive!
Just for some additional info, I used the "Check Archive" tool in TI and the files that were created on my DVD's are good but a restore still does not work.
This just bugs the hell out of me because it's just one more example of software not doing what it's advertised to do.
Thanks again for all of the responses.

    Hello mikespa,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software.

We are sorry for the delay with the response.

Please be aware that the latest build (3567) of Acronis True Image 9.0 Home supports restoration of individual files and folders from the backup archives spanned over several CDs\DVDs. However, some older builds were not capable of doing this, because of the known problem they contained. We therefore recommend that you make sure that you use the latest build (3567) of Acronis True Image 9.0 Home which is available at: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/support/updates/

You can find the full version name and build number by going to Help -> About... menu in the main program window.

To get access to updates you should create an account at:
    http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/my/
then log in and use your serial number to register your software.

Please uninstall any previously installed build by following Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs -> Acronis True Image, prior to installing build 3567.

Note that you should create new Bootable Rescue CD after installing the update.

If the problem still persists with the latest build (3567) of Acronis True Image 9.0 Home then please describe it in more details.

    - Let us know if the problem appears both when you try to restore individual files and folders from the backup archive spanned over several DVDs using the latest build (3567) of Acronis True Image 9.0 Home from under Windows and when your computer is booted from Bootable Rescue CD created with the latest build (3567) of Acronis True Image 9.0 Home;

    - Provide the exact text of the error message that you receive;

    - When exactly do you receive this error message?

    - Describe actions taken before the problem appears step-by-step.

    Thank you.
