i have ad-aware SE (free edition) build 1.06r1. the definition file i currently have loaded is SE1R106 02.05.2006. when i try and update the definition file, it just hangs at retrieving updates, and then shows an error message "the downloaded definitions file could not be read, please download it again".

This is a similar error that occurs to people every now and then (it's happened to me several times, including the latest one). All you have to do is wait for a while then try update again and it should be fine (usually takes no longer than 1 day to fix from my experience.

ok,,,will keep trying. i just uninstalled it, and installed it again and tried to update the definitions, and it still will not update (and now i have some definition file that is like 351 days old!)

i guess there is an ad-aware forum tied into the program which i discovered, and i reviewed it and this seems to be a problem many are having today.....here's the forum if anyone wants to keep posted on the progress....seems maybe just the updates server is down http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showforum=6

So your so-called free AD-aware is not exactly free...is it. You still have to pay for the DSL connection.

    well, lets see:

    january DSL cost $29.95
    february DSL cost $29.95
    march DSL cost $29.95
april, download and use ad-aware se free edition, DSL cost $29.95
    may DSL cost $29.95

........looks to me like ad-aware didn't cost me anything.

also, the update server seems to be working fine again as i was able to update the definition file now.

Yea, it is working again. It seems it was the mirror at Lavasoft.
@thebigdintx My point was without your 29.95 DSL connection you couldn't download a thing, even if it was "FREE".
