I am not really very competent to answer, but I have noticed in the Kaspersky forums that KAV 6 has issues with Outpost on some machines. If you are interested in KAV 6 I suggest you visit the Kaspersky forum and read the posts.

I have used LnS for over a year, and also have been trialing KAV 6, and there are no issues. I do not know which is the best firewall.

KAV has issues with numerous other security software, not just outpost, because of the way they are filtering web traffic.

Neither, OP or LnS are really for total newbies as both require a bit more knowledge to set up correctly and securely than some other firewall products. Both are excellent products and do what they are designed to do. They tied in the latest leak tests so I wouldn't say either is better than the other, that depends on the end user as to which fits his needs and his system. I would say the LnS has a steeper learning curve as OP has just added auto rule configuration which would help less experienced users configure it securely, but then again LnS has their forums here and help is offered readily. Depending on your attitude and knowledge level some people also suggest that OP is somehow weaker or less secure BECAUSE of it's automatic rule creation. It can be turned off if you feel that way. Just my $.02

My own experience with LooknStop was just to download, install, and use the Enhanced Rules Set. Other than that I have not made any changes to the default.

It is probably correct that one can "fine tune" LnS if he has the knowledge, but I don't. It has worked fine for me, and I am not, can't even spell, geek.
    Just FWIW.

I have been running Look N' Stop for about 4 years now and never had a problem. I use the enhanced ruleset and added one or two of the importable rules. Nothing fancy on either of my computers so no rules creation has been needed. It runs incredibly light and is very secure. Not sure which version you are running but the Beta version LnS 2.05p3 has the new drivers with it...cheers...

    Look n Stop
    KAV 6

No problems here, both work fine together.

I trialed both Outpost Pro and L n S but I had an easier time with L n S so I made that firewall my final decision.
Matter of fact I didn't even use the entire trial time for Outpost Pro, I think it was for about a week or two and immediately switched back to L n S.

Thank goodness to read posts here about the install of LnS without having too many configs to do.
I had LnS on my list for new computer but read the posts in the forum and got confused plus worried I may not be able to configure the firewall - 'better the one I know'.... as in Outpost (this made me consider just installing Outpost again when the computer is ready)

I have asked questions and received very helpful replies but checking the forum had me worried when I read the configuration posts. It seemed to be getting more and more complicated for rulesets o_O
Outpost is heavy on resources and even though my computer has plenty I still preferred a lighter firewall - reading the posts in this section today has made me add LnS to my possible firewall again - thanks.

Have had Outpost for 2yrs - only the time with the BSOD due to hyperthreading. I am running an older version without all the antispyware bits added, don't want to uninstall at this stage in case of driver conflicts. New computer may just have LnS now that a few more worries have been answered here.

That is because they are the two best out there. Just like all these threads comparing NOD and KAV.

I like both of these firewalls, I have a current "family licence" for outpost, but this in recent releases as been giving me problems with hardware DEP, and wont let me enter subnet masks into my rules, but have not yet tried the latest version. LnS gave me a few problems until the 205p3 beta version, which ran o.k., I was waiting untill this came out of beta and then would of supported this by the purchase of a licence, but its still a beta, so will wait.

Considering LnS P3, I wonder if I will have to buy a new license or just update when it comes out of beta?

As much as I like LnS, I might consider KIS 2006 instead. Right now I am planning to keep LnS and buy KAV6, but the policy for LnS license might change that.

You should try 3.51, it isn't adding any new features, but it corrects quite a few problems some people were having though. The rants against 3.5 on the OP forum seem to have quieted down considerably since this release. There are still some people having problems though.

I think Outpost is easier, even for newbies, with a step by step process which leads to extremely good security which, true enough, can then be improved upon by further tightening the tweaks in Outpost if one feels like it.
It may be me, but I never managed to secure my connection using LnS.
    Cheers

I was one of those who got scared off for a while because of the previous Outpost release, as can be seen in https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?p=680791#post680791
But I'm totally happy with the current 3.51 version, very smooth and no problem at all. Wonderful product.

I bought KIS 6 for my secondary machine, figuring I'd just use Anti-Hacker for the FW.. it ended up annoying me enough that I decided to buy another license for LnS, which actually costed more than KIS from newegg ;) When you're used to LnS, there's just no replacement. As far as the license goes, you'll have free upgrades until version 3 (not the current beta, which is still 2.05), which is likely quite a long way away.

I have both licences and have always been divided whether one is better than the other. I've decided to install them for a month or two (alternatively) and see how i feel about them. I can only give my opinion as a very average user as I have no knowledge about setting up firewalls other than following BlackSpear's recommendations for LnS and letting OutPost's wizard decide the best configuration.

OutPost is definitely felt on my system in terms of booting time, shutting down, and browsing speed (not much though). It gives a comprehensive protection with all its plug-ins, especially regarding spyware.

Lns is very light, and it is a pure firewall wich I find great in conjunction with ProcessGuard (PG somehow makes up for my lack of knowledge towards tweaking LnS).

I had a problem with OutPost that has persisted through several upgrades: After 2-3 weeks of operation, for some reasons it blocks some websites (very common ones) and needs a reboot to correct this behaviour. Some other people have experienced the same problem.

Considering that this has been happening fairly regularly, I have to conclude that on my system LnS is the best option.

Osaban this is a good report to read from someone who admits they are not familiar with all the setting up of rules in firewalls.
I think I can cope with things when I get to know the software as I did with Outpost's rules although far from being as techincal as most who are confirguring global rules (I depend more on application rules for mine although do have some others when I know they are correct)

I have used Blackspear's configs for NOD and know without this I would still be working all of the extra configs out.
The discussions about rules in LnS's section of the forum have me o_O with your experience of actually experiencing both firewalls this helps me further as I really worried a lot about setting LnS up to work for me if I installed after using Outpost.

I know I have a good firewall in Outpost but am held back at v2.7 as after this there seems to have been a lot of issues which I didn't want to introduce, otherwise I would spend my time configuring firewalls and not enjoying my computer. I know OP can slow browsing a little and unless I open and close the GUI when it starts it can use a lot of CPU - this is my main reason for looking at the alternative 'light' firewall.

I have used Norton in the past (no way now) have used Sygate and then migrated to Outpost. I would like to setup my new computer with a capable but light firewall - I know both are good and each have their strong points but if LnS proves to be successful for someone who is not as confident with configurations as seen in the discussions I think this is a good post to help me, thanks.
I know I grasp knowledge and learn more than I think I do it is just my lack of confidence in myself which prevents me from testing a new firewall. I also know when confronted with the setup it may make more sense than looking & trying to solve problems before they happen.

I chose Outpost (currently using 3.51) and I don't regret it. I've tried L'n'S but it wasn't that good for me. I had problems with rules for the P2P programs I use. Plus I don't like the number of Half Open connections (BitComet has 512 set up by me) and I use Outpost for a long time. I know it is the best and you can only convince yourself of that. Outpost has live support: http://www.agnitum.com/support/chat.php which is better than a forum IMHO.

    Hello,

This message is addressed to Paranoid2000.

You are a expert in security. Which software of safety (anti-virus, firewall and others) do you use personally?

I thank you for your attention.
