I have a folder and files that have been created by 3rd-party encryption software using high-grade 128bit encryption techniques. Please note that this is NOT Windows encryption.

When doing either a backup or disk image, when TI9 gets to these folders/files how will it deal with them? Will it "see" them? Will it image them? Will it back them up?

    Yes, yes, yes.

The whole purpose of imaging and backing up is that when it is restored it is exactly as it was before it was imaged or backed up. Otherwise it would be a pointless exercise.

Be certain to test this before you rely on it. In an earlier version of TI 9, I found a problem with the files backup utility and encrypted files. Some of my files were encrypted with Windows encryption and they seemed to backup just fine. However when I restored them, they were zero length (there was nothing in them). I've not followed up to see if it's been fixed in later versions.

    Hello Tabvla,

Thank you for your interest in Acronis Disk Backup Software.

Please accept our apologies for the delay with the response.

Please note that there should not be any problems backing up and restoring disks\partitions containing encrypted files and folders. The point is that Acronis True Image uses a special method of "snapshot" image creation, it doesn't store the standalone files or directories, but saves blocks of hard drive data, saving the information about disk/partition geometry. After the restore you will get the exact copy of the once backed up disk\partition.

However, the problems may arise when you create\restore a file-based backup of the encrypted files\folders or restore encrypted files\folders from a disk\partition image. The point is that not every files\folders encryption method is supported by the current version of Acronis True Image. For example, standard Windows encryption is fully supported.

We recommend that you create a file-based backup of your encrypted folder and then try to restore this folder from the resulting image archive. If you encounter any problems performing these actions then please let us know the exact name, version and build number of the program that you use to encrypt files and folders on your hard drive. I'll forward this information to our Development Team and they will do their best in order to implement the support for this particular encryption software\method in the future Acronis True Image builds\versions.

If you did not purchase the software yet then we recommend that you download and install the free trial version of Acronis True Image 9.0 Home to see how the software works on your computer.

If you are satisfied with the work of the free trial version of Acronis True Image 9.0 Home then please visit Acronis online store to purchase the full version of the product. Note that we have a flexible system of discounts and the amount of the discount varies depending on the number of copies you want to purchase. In case you are planning to purchase many copies, please contact our Sales Team at sales@acronis.com.

If you have any further questions concerning Acronis software, please feel free to submit a request for technical support or post any of them on this forum. We will certainly try to help you in resolving any issues.

    Thank you.

Thank you Acronis Support for the information.

I have understood what you have written as follows:-

    1. If the user makes a disk image there should be no problems in restoring encrypted files contained within that image irrespective of the encryption engine.

    2. If the user makes a backup and that backup contains encrypted files then there may be a problem when the backup is restored if the files were encrypted using an encryption engine that is not supported.

For the benefit of the Forum can you please confirm that my understanding is correct.

    Thank You.

    Hello Tabvla,

Yes, you are right. Just would like to add to the second part:

If you create file-based backup of the encrypted files/folders and the encryption method is not supported by the current version of Acronis True Image then the backup might fail.

    Thank you.
