External HDD backups?

Hello!
I have been practising backing up to my external HDD connected via USB card 2.0 however I find transfers too slow more than 20 minutes to create an image and more than 10 mintues to verify it.
Any suggestions? Thanks

 

How big is the image, that is, the size of the .tib file(s) created by the imaging process?

Are you doing an image backup or a Files and Folders backup? Files and Folders is a lot slower.

Are you doing it within Windows or creating the image with the bootable CD version?

The image is 1.67 compressed normal and it is the primary partion and created the image file directly to the external HDD
I wonder if it is better to create the image onto a normal partiton and copy that across the USB HDD?

 

Your times are very slow for 1.67GB of data on a USB 2 device. You are creating the image within Windows? The reason I ask that is sometimes the linux drivers on the recovery CD are not optomized for a particular USB drive and Acronis may be able to provide you with better ones. Windows doesn't usually have this problem.

1. Try making the image to an internal partition and record the time.

2. Also, record the time it takes to copy the backup from the internal partition to the external drive.

 

Same image creation on an internal drive would be 12 minutes which is normally three times slower than Ghost 8.3

 

That is slow. On my 1.2Ghz machine I create 3 GB of normal compressed .tib files in 5 minutes. Did you let the image create or go by the initial time estimate? The initial time estimate often is much too long compared to the actual time.

Look in your Event Viewer's System Log to see if there are any disk errors recorded.

Also run chkdsk X: /r on all your partitions. Substitute the drive letter of the partition being checked for X.

 

No unfortunately there are no such errors though a hardware retailer told me that much depends of the IDE transfers rates and system memory. He also added that I may have to consider cable transfers which would be a tad faster though it is difficult to quantify right now.

Could you please describe the issue in more details: what is the exact name of the product and build number that you use? You can find this information in the Help -> About dialog (build number should be a 3 or 4 digit number). Did you use Acronis True Image Bootable Rescue Media or did you use Acronis True Image in Windows? Please also let us know how much time it takes exactly to copy 1GB or larger file from your computer to this particular USB hard drive using Windows Explorer.
