It usually takes 30 days to trial software.

The topic starter didn't state how long he has had the trial version - I don't understand what difference that makes unless it had expired when Eset witheld trial updates - I don't think that is the case here otherwise the post would have been pointless.

I agree the ultimate responsibility lies with the user but given that you can't run two real-time AVs you do become very reliant upon the AV you are trialling.

That quote about damages is fairly standard kind of wording for any company to use for trial software of any kind. It covers backsides but doesn't make it morally right to intentionally withold updates from trial users.

Anyway, I'm getting involved in something that hasn't even affected me, I just couldn't bit my lip about it thats all

I would have thought it pointless too - but you have no idea how many times we get support (as a reseller) from clients who purchased the license and did not read the email they were sent after purchase. The most important feature of one of the most prominent messages is...

You need to UNINSTALL the trial - and INSTALL the full verison.

I have just got through a round of support with one person who has emailed us for 4 months complaining that his version if NOT updating. And YES - he still had the trial installed.

"I didn't read that email except to get the username and password" is a response we deal with on an almost daily basis.

Why does the trial version allow the login and password for updates to be entered in the first place? That would take care of the problem right there.

because it currently does. The suggestion to change the username fields to greyed out is an excellent one - I know I suggested something similar, but this is even better.

A work colleague of mine who is currently trialling NOD (I'd suggested he tries out NOD and KAV). Anyway, he is still at 1.1454 as of yesterday evening. He is now two weeks into his trial of which one week has been stuck at old signatures.

I've explained and pointed him at this forum so that he can understand the problem but it hasn't given him a "warm" feeling about the product, which is a real shame as it is quite hard to convince someone try out any AV other than the mainstream Norton and McAfee.

Maybe he will get an update today......

Greyed out, or with TRIAL and VERSION as login and pw permanently in the fields. Maybe even in bold flashing red. :)

Whatever is done, there should be an easy, readily apparent way to tell the trial from the full version.

I don't remember what the e-mail you get after purchase says, so I'll have to look at it tonight.

It should stress uninstalling the trial and installing the full version. For people who don't RTFM and just look for the login and passwd, trying to enter those in the trial version should immediately bring you to a screeching stop so you have to go back and actually read the e-mail.

There _are_ a couple of other possible solutions.

It might be possible to have _everyone_ start with the trial version. People with a valid login and passwd would then be able to get an update to the software that gives you the full version (this would be done through the current update mechanism).

A third variant would be to have one version of the software, and require a trial login/passwd to be generated. You fill in a form on the web site and a login/passwd good for 30 days is mailed to you and you're taken to a page where you can d/l the software. This method would make it difficult to run separate servers for the trial and pay updates, but I think you could even work around that if need be.

Personally, I think just greying out the fields is the best bet, but I may not be the typical customer. (I actually read the e-mail and uninstalled the trial verison...) :)

Yes, this _is_ a real concern. I have been telling people who ask me about AVG that one of the problems I saw repeatedly is that their free version occasionally forgets how to update, and a reinstall is the only thing that will fix it. It also fails silently and doesn't start screaming at you that it's out of date.

So now it looks like NOD32 may not be superior in this respect.

I think I'd at least like to see a statement from Eset about what happened and if they've fixed the problem. (And if it was limited to the trial version only.) (We can assume there is/was a problem since multiple people are reporting it.)

I did not see this problem myself, so I can't really comment further, but it's encouraging that we're hearing reports that it's now fixed.

We haven't had recently problems updating the trial version to the most current 1.1461. If you still cannot update it, uninstall it, reboot the computer and install it again by running setup.exe from within the program files/eset/install folder.

Just have an explanation where the Username/Password would go, explaining that this is a Trial version, and if you have recently purchased NOD32, you have to Uninstall the Trial version and Install the real version.

    Why complicate this? KISS...

    First you say,
    And now you say,
So where the updates stopped intentionally for trial versions or have you not had any recent problems updating the trial versions?

I believe that Marcos already answered that in the same message of his that you quoted. After saying that the updates for trial and cracked versions were ceased intentionally, he went on to say, "In the event of a large update (happens 4-5 times a year) paying users have the highest priority and the others are updated afterwards."

In other words the updates were ceased to ensure that paying users got their updates first. You may not agree with it but that's what happened.

Problems with timely nod32 updates are not uncommon for us paid unix customers. Like the trial version - it calls a single server - nod32.com for updates. More often than one would like, and the support folks at nod32 will admit to, that update server can't be reached for whatever reason.

The new version updated as of 20060412 is 1.1486 mind you i have paid for it and have no complaints at all.
when i upgraded from the trial version I just left it once I had entered user and password and it uninstalled and reinstalled itself.
It even works ok with IE7 and windows live onecare.
