I formatted 2 DVDs with Sonic's DLA (their UDF writer) and successfully created 2 discs of the backup. When I booted from the rescue disk, and put in disc 2 of the backup, it wouldn't recognize the backup! It's an HP Lightscribe 8x DVD-RW / CD-RW Combo with Double Layer. It thinks it's a CD drive. If I enter the backup name, it still won't find it and nothing happens with disc 1, either. (I'm posting this on another PC).

I didn't use any split option for the files - I just created them directly. I've used this method before.

What if anything has changed since you last used this method successfully if that is what you mean by using "this method before"?

Sorry - I meant using that method on another PC.

    Hello sjeter,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software.

Please be aware that this is a normal situation when a DVD writer is shown as a CD burner in Acronis True Image. This does not affect the device's functionality and you can use DVD.

Could you please clarify if it is possible to restore this image archives when using Acronis True Image 9.0 in Windows?

Please explain your step-by-step actions which you took in order to create these images. Which of two methods described in this FAQ article you use to create these DVD discs?

    Thank you.

Aleksandr, thanks for your response. I use this method:

    Install UDF packet DVD-writing software.
    Format the DVD discs.
Start Acronis True Image 9.0 Home, insert the formatted DVD disc into the DVD burner and create an image.

What I meant by it showing CD instead of DVD is that it's not recognizing the file on the DVD. When I get home tonight, I'll try it in Windows.

This problem is occurring on my husband's laptop. I purchased TI9 and installed it but had to wait to get the CD version of the upgrade to Sonic so I could get the UDF packet-writing feature. In the meantime, I had held off installing any Windows Updates. So after I created the backup, I installed a whole bunch of updates and after rebooting it went to a blank desktop - no icons, just the bitmap - completely frozen. That's when I did a hard reset and tried the restore and posted this thread from my PC.

Since then, I've rebooted it several times and for some strange reason it's working now, but I still need to figure out the restore problem.

The archive was successfully recognized (and verified) in Windows. I also tried booting with the recovery CD and hitting F11 and specifying the "quiet acpi=off noapic" parameter and going into the full version. No joy; still can't see the file.

I'm waiting on a registration question for my husband's ID and then I will continue this conversation via technical support. ...I'm the geek in the family :) ...

I've already collected the report.txt and the System Information file.

    Hello sjeter,

If you are saving your images to DVD directly, i.e. using third party UDF packet DVD writing software then please make sure that you use UDF version 2.1 or lower. The point is that UDF versons higher than 2.1 are not supported when using Bootable Rescue CD and therefore images that are actually reside on DVD are not visible in rescue mode.

If you use UDF versons higher than 2.1 then you could copy the images from DVD discs to a local hard drive then reformat DVD discs to the UDF version 2.1 or lower then copy the files to this DVD discs. Please remember that in this case you should finalize your DVD.

    Thank you.

Thanks, Aleksandr. I discovered that it is indeed a question of compatibility. I did what I should have done earlier (it's been a loooong week) and searched the forum for 'sonic'. I found this: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=76145

    See posts #6 and #7.

I took the DVDs I had created and followed the procedure to 'make compatible'. I rebooted with the rescue disk and started the recovery process with the second disk and tada! the .tib file was recognized.

Of course, my next goal is to get an external USB drive because backup & recovery would be a lot faster...
