Users of TrojanHunter V4.2 or earlier, Please Read.

On 23-March-06, TrojanHunter V4.5 was released.

Because of the changes and enhancements provided in V4.5, LiveUpdate for new Rulesets/Definitions are no longer being issued for TrojanHunter V4.2 or earlier. Manual updating of the rulesets will not work either.

TH users must update to V4.5 in order to obtain current rulesets/definitions for TrojanHunter.

Am I understanding this correctly....that current users of 4.2 will NOT receive any product updates, either via scheduled updates through the interface OR through a manual update? The ONLY way to receive updates is to "upgrade"

 

I can understand this position. Do the math on all the software whose authors want you to continually pay for updates, and sometimes you will be shocked by how much you spend per year.

I'm not saying that Magnus is wrong, or that it's not understandable, but I just can't get into paying annual fees all over the place.

(Nothing against anyone who does continue to use and pay for TrojanHunter. If I had the cash flow I did four years ago, I probably would, too.)

 

A two year update is only $16.00 so i bought it..........troganhunter is a good program and 4.5 just came out...............

Upgrading is necessary to receive rulesets/definitions updates released after 23-March-06. LiveUpdate does not download and install PRODUCT upgrades....only rulesets/definitions for detections.

Hi I agree with you $16 for two years is very cheap for TH. The important thing is that it is good reliable software very regularly updated, with support that responds fast to emails.

Some malware detection programs seem to be offering annual renewals in and around $29. If I have several installed, I will have to skip using a few as the expense would be prohibitive. If software companies want to be greedy and not offer a decent deal to regulars - fair enough, but they will lose my business and that of others who have the same attitude as me...

As I see it re security:- 1 top virus checker/1 firewall/several malware detectors/1 dedicated trojan detector - (I prefer two)/1 rootkit detector is the minimum needed. Most people have a lot more then that. I also like to have a dedicated registry and process protector.

I agree that $16 for a two year licence is very tempting. Well, for most users i would suspect. But to be honest i already pay yearly subscription's to a few application's and i don't want to add another, even as cheap as it is. I can see why people have been tempted, and rightly so! Only from my point of view, i used it as backup to BOClean. I just wanted the benefit of having a dedicated AT scanner. Even though i have had a number of attempted infection's(from some nice places i go )TH has found nothing in the last 12 months+ and at times i have realised i have not even updated or ran it for over two months. Add to that i have licences for both KAV and NOD32 and as you will see, i find it virtually impossible to justify paying for something that will most likely never get used. I also have the option of adding the free version of Ewido or/and A-Squared for my on-demand trojan scanning. I have Regrun Platinum and SuperAntiSpyware. All these sit behind my first line of defence - Online Armor.

TH was an extra, but based on my current apps, is one i believe i can do without. It's still a really good app, and one i would have no problem using if i wasn't already covered by the above. And that current price - "Cheap as chips!"

Paying subscription fees for an app I only used sporadically isn't in the cards...

I think the way to go is the way A2 and others have done.
Keep a freeware version with some limitations, if you don't want to see your subscriber base plummet...

some of us can't afford subscriptions for firewall, antivirus, antitrojan, and so forth... even at a discount, these add up, to those living within a budget.

I give kudos to those who have managed to keep freeware going, one way or the other... or even to those who have managed to stay off the subscription treadmill. I do recall at the time that TDS bit the dust, when some were arguing that subscription fees were the wave of the future, and therefore a necessary step to dump TDS, Magnus said no, he was doing very well financially the way he was doing it with TH, and had no need to change. I guess he's since had second thoughts about that....

Thanks for the info. I was using 4.2 and I am trailing 4.5 but I think I'll go over to ewido as an AT. I really don't want to pay yearly for TH. IMHO it's not that great of a program. There's others progrms that just as good for free. Maybe I'll jst get KAV and not even worry about an AT.

 

TrojanHunter V4.5, Build 920 has been released as of 31-March-2006. The new build fixes problems identified in V4.5's initial version release.

I have purchased TH v4.2 along with Ewido V3.5 on Dec.2004 after reading very positive comments in CNet. Both have been providing me a good sense of security, although have not caught more than a dozen malwares since. Now TH wants me to fork another hard-earned $$ to continue the protection. It is absurd from vendor-client prospective. I was led to believe that purchase on Dec.2004 IS bona fide valid-as-long-as-you-wish sort transaction;because i paid US$ 49.95(much higher than average) for it! Merely after short 14 months, i along with many others(!) are shocked to learn that what we have paid for not long ago is no longer worth what was written on. Have we been abandoned ? or ignored? I was given until May 1,2006 to fork over $$$ to continue using V.4.5 ; not an inch difference from being offered a trial version (normally 30 days). Is this the PROPER way to treat royal client(when vendor needs us to survive)? Bad PR work! I declare to abandon TH ship and stay aflot with Ewido! Pleae edit it if appears too offensive.

 

The TrojanHunter site has, for years, explicitly and plainly stated that while updates were currently free, it may not always remain that way. This is from the TH site in November, 2003:

Besides, Ewido (with memory scanning, real-time scanning, and automatic updates) is a subscription license, and it's a lot more than TH is ($20 per year for Ewido versus $12 per year or $16 for two years for TH).

I've always thought that TH was ridiculously expensive to purchase new, but the renewal prices seem reasonable to me.
