SpywareBlaster and Dialers

Really basic question. Javacool says of SpywareBlaster:

"Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software."

How do I parse this, especially in regard to dialers? Does it mean that SpywareBlaster is effective against ActiveX-based dialers -- but that there are other dialers, NOT ActiveX based, which SpywareBlaster is not intended to act against.

Or does it mean that SpywareBlaster is aimed at ALL dialers, whether ActiveX-based or not? Or are all dialers ActiveX based, so that it comes to the same thing anyway?

 

I can't give you an official answer, but IMHO SpywareBlaster helps against the vast majority of all known dialers, simply because they are ActiveX based and in SpywareBlasters database.
Against other (read: new variants) dialers being spread from the same sites because the known sites were put in your Restricted Zone.

It provides that protection by assuring certain ActiveX controls are never called by Internet Explorer by setting a little ole killbit.

Only those dialer's that are contained in Spywareblasters ActiveX database.

"A dialer is a very small program, often installed using the ActiveX technology".

 

Thanks. I think I've got it:

1) SpywareBlaster only works against ActiveX-based items (only those in the SpywareBlaster list, of course). I didn't know that, which shows how truly basic my question was.

2) SpywareBlaster can protect against most dialers, since most of them use ActiveX. (Of course it only protects against those in the SpywareBlaster list or database.)

 

SpywareBlaster can also block normal downloads (.exe files, etc) from sites in its Restricted Sites list. Many dialers are blocked in that way as well, to provide an additional layer of protection.
