Unable to "Enable All Protection" in IE

Just downloaded 3.5.1 on Windows XP Pro, ran program and get the message "209 items have protection disabled". I uninstalled and reinstalled, yet cannot enable protection for these items. What's up?

Apparently Cookie Pal does cause this "209 items have protection disabled" problem. I do not know if you have it, but if you do this thread discusses it

Apparently Cookie Pal needs to be temporarily disabled while enabling spywareblaster.

 

I don't have CookiePal, at least as far as I know.

 

You should list your other anti-malware & firewall applications as there have been small conflicts like this between Spywareblaster and other anti-malware.

I know Spysweeper and IE Spyad caused some disabling-but the numbers were different.

I was hoping with the 209 that you'd get the easy answer of cookie pal.

When you were installing Spywarebalster do you remember receiving any warnings about Spywareblaster trying to change security settings for a site?

I also noticed that you had previously posted that all protection became disabled at one time-was there anything you did to resolve this?

These conflicts will occur usually when two(or more) programs are setting restricted sites.

Hopefully, when you post your other apps, someone will have an answer for you.

Without assuming wrongly....which protection items does this concern....ActiveX, Cookie or Restricted Sites ?

Since you are not sure....would you mind taking a look in Add\Remove Programs and double check Please. While you are looking there....it's very important to know all of the Security\Privacy programs you have installed.

 

I do not have Cookie Pal. All unprotect entries are Cookies. My Internet settings are "Custom" to accept First Party and block Third Party cookies. I appreciate your help.

 

Ok....is that for the Internet Explorer or Firefox Cookie Protection.

IE Cookie protection. Those 3 are only Security/Privacy software

If you running Internet Explorer 5 or 5.5 cookie blocking using SpywareBlaster is not possible. That would currently leave 209 items unprotected.

I don't think that is true. Prior to downloading the latest version of Spywareblaster, I was able to block cookies.

I'm ready to go back to a previous version, is the older version available?

 

The part about Internet Explorer 5 or 5.5 is true because versions prior to IE 6 did not have the Tools\Internet Options\Privacy tab....which means they did not have P3P\History in the registry and if that key ain't there Spywareblaster can't place it's Cookie database there.

Of course you are using IE 6.0.2900 which means all that info is mute in regards to the problem you are having.

I've been following your thread and, I too, am experiencing the same issue. My privacy programs and versions are the same as yours, my OS is XP home, and the exceptions are my anti virus (I use AVG) and the addition of Spysweeper on my system. My internet settings are the same as yours and I am also running IE 6. This happened for the first time, ironically after I updated all of the definitions for my privacy programs today, as I do every 5-6 days. Until today there was never an issue/conflict, I was using IE 6 during this time. I now have 268 items that claim to have protection disabled. I have checked all of my settings and followed the instructions in the last post, 100hot.com was already listed and blocked. However, I pulled one site name, associated with the cookies, to see if I could block it using your formula and it worked. BTW, each of these 268 items are COOLWEBSEARCH, not certain if that sheds any light. I have been utilizing SpywareBlaster for quite some time now and this is the first time that it has identified items but could not enable the necessary protection. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Given those numbers and the addition of Spysweeper\COOLWEBSEARCH....I would venture to say these are Restricted Site entries only

That did the trick, however, I am still curious why this issue never occured before today, settings have always been the same. I've been using all of these programs for a year or so and never encountered this problem before. Was this perhaps due to one of the program updates? I will definitely shoot an e-mail off to Webroot and notify them of the conflict.

This has been a known issue as far back as the first of this year hence the Forum Sticky concerning this matter....but it sure want hurt folks to e-mail Webroot given it's not a Spywareblaster issue to resolve.

 

Given the fact there is a first for everything but given the fact this type anamoly has not been seen to my knowledge unless another program is preventing the enabling of Spywareblaster IE Cookie protection....We would appreciate it if you would try a few things before reverting to a previous version Please.

Open Spywareblaster and at the top of the Protection Window select Internet Explorer tab. Un-check if checked the Prevent spyware/tracking cookies box. Then re-select the check box Prevent spyware/tracking cookies and make note if you saw a green progress bar at the bottom of the Spywareblaster GUI ??

If so....select Protect Against Checked Items. Close Spywareblaster and then re-open Spywareblaster and let us know your results Please.

If you are still showing 209 items have detection disabled let's procede further Please.

Download the below history.txt file to either your desktop or folder of your choice. Once downloaded....right click that file and rename it history.reg. Then right click that file again and select Merge and Yes that you want to Add the information. Once that's completed open Spywareblaster and tell us what you now see in regards to IE cookie protection Please.

Also open up Internet Explorer to the Tools\Internet Options\Privacy tab....down in the bottom right Web Sites area select Edit. Do you have a long list of Managed Web sites: ??

 

I think progress is being made, thanks. I did as instructed above; there's a new twist. The Status screen indicates 0 items have protection disabled, but, when I select IE and scroll down the Block List, none of the Cookies are checked. When I "Protect...", they are not checked and, when I back up to Status screen, 209 unprotected items return

 

I realize that was a number of steps and do appreciate it but does that include you merged the history.reg file and if so what did you see when you opened up Internet Explorer to the Tools\Internet Options\Privacy tab....down in the bottom right Web Sites area select Edit. Do you have a long list of Managed Web sites: ??

The list in this history file includes unprotected Cookies; all history items are not on the Spywareblaster list. Also, Blocked sites in IE include allitems listed in the history file.

 

You have lost me....where are you reading that from

 

History.reg lists sites that are among the 209 Spywareblaster is not protecting. My list of "Always Block" sites in Internet Settings, includes all of the sites in history.reg.

 

Actually the history.reg file lists all 209 items that are contained in Spywareblasters database. I chose to do it that way so as to make sure of something.

In any case....I realize I have asked for a lot of checking and do appreciate it but this is not something normal so I am attempting to think of all causes.

What I would like for you to do now is to open Internet Explorer and re-visit "Sites"/Managed Web Sites" and select Remove All....if that is the selection in XP. Then close that IE window and re-open an IE window to see if the sites are indeed gone from the Managed Web Sites list. I am asking for that step due to your possible User settings\Registry problem. If they are still listed disregard the rest of the request.

Open up Spywareblaster and select Enable All Protection down in the Quick Tasks section. Please do not make any other adjustmentsbut close Spywareblaster down and then look again in IE Managed Web Sites and tell me if any URL items are listed Please.
