Just to highlight 2 threads related to this matter...

It seems that not only gunbound will be asking those using PG to stop using PG just to play the game, it seems that almost any game development company that uses nProtect Gameguard WILL be asking the same question as well.
In the ProcessGuard program, if you add gameguard.des and gamemon.des which are the files belonging to nprotect gameguard to the PG protection list and you use PG to have control over how gameguard works, gameguard will show some errors and the game will not run at all.

Why did Softnyx ask its players to NOT USE PG? Because of nProtect Gameguard, because PG will interfere with gameguard and cause it not to run. So, it seems that unless all these game companies STOP USING Gameguard, those using PG will definitely have problems with games that use nProtect Gameguard.

It's because Processguard protects you from a *few* of Gameguard's rather malicious features. (I say malicious because it has rootkit code in it among other things...) For instance, one of the things gameguard does is inject a driver into all of your running processes (dump_wmmic.sys or so I've been told by some security products), it also terminates system.exe and shuts down your computer when it detects a "possible hacking threat" e.g, hex editors and the like, it also loads a driver in the windows kernel messing up your task manager (or anything similar like task manager plus) and creates fake processIDs for the game process.. It writes and reads directly to your physical memory undermining most of your security products... the list goes on. Gameguard takes complete control over your computer and limits your access to your own computer, loads a bunch of temporary files (and more are used every time you run the game and doesn't delete them afterwards nor tells you where they are)! Processguard stops that so you are discouraged from running processguard.

What a strange world eh? Companies are blacklisting security software. Read what you will into that.

MANY trojan variants exist which pretend to be gameguard hacks, or even gameguard upgrades I believe some were posing as. I've seen hundreds of things.. and as for fake game hacks in general, thousands..

As for the actual software itself, any protection system like it would have to be open source to the people who license it, so they can check for themselves. If not, I would hope someone put a guarantee on it so there aren't any truths to your claims of a rootkit in there.

I don't think there are any fake gameguard upgrades, it upgrades every time you load the game and if it can't update for whatever reason it just shuts the whole game down/shuts your system down.

I'd say it's about five times more malicious than a rootkit, considering you have to run it every time you want to play a game that is *attached* to gameguard. If you really doubt the horrors mentioned above, feel free to download a 'gameguarded' game and see it for yourself.
