Hi all & Hi and Thanks to javacool for the years of protection spywareblaster 3.4 has provided :) . Am greatly looking forward to getting the update issue solved for the new 3.5.1 version although I've not yet got it to update successfully.

Another NIS XP basic home user here, trying to get it sorted - unable/unwilling to disable NIS while online as it basically is my security system apart from spywareblaster and S & D. Have tried configuring NIS to allow SB 3.5.1 to update but no luck as yet.

For NIS users - there have been updates in Trusted application list, Trusted sites & several other updates since the 9th Jan FYI, so if you haven't clicked on NIS's liveupdate in the past couple of days, there are updates awaiting you.

Any windows users who don't have auto update enabled, suggest you head to update/windows sites as there's a critical update awaiting you as of approx 11 hours ago . Sorry if these last 2 paragraphs seem off subject but as NIS is the main issue with updating spywareblaster 3.5.1, it seemed a good idea to mention the updates & the w1ndows vulnerability affects most in this thread also  , including those ( apparently ) on the older OS systems as far as I could tell ( as in special instructions linked for 95/98 ).

1st post here & thanks to Wilders, javacool & all who make it such a friendly, readable site with rapid help given where possible :thumb: . Apologies in advance to Mods if previous 2 paragraphs are inappropriate to this thread.

    Sincerely,
    CL

Re: Update problem - SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 SUCCESS!!

    :thumb: :thumb: success at last!
    (1) I uninstalled NIS 2005 and reinstalled it. It then went straight to the Live Update screen, which I ran. That downloaded over 11 meg. It then prompted me to run Live Update again. I did but it told me Live Update wasn't installed!
    (2) checked Symantec tech help website - final page 'not available' so I rang them on 020 7616 5600. That suggested I try their web tech help on www.symantec.com/euassistant. 'page not available' - so I rang the 020 number again.
    (3) Technician wanted £18 to help - when I suggested it was their product at fault his attitude was 'tough'. The Complaint phone number he gave me was ficticious.
    (4) Rang Symantec again - went to the new subscriptions option. Their solution was that I buy NIS 2006!! Demanded supervisor but was put through to techinical again.
    (5) Very helpful guy - he sorted it without charging. it seems that Norton 2005 came with LiveUpdate 2.1 (I think) but that's had to be replaced. Version 3.0 was the answer. Here's how to instal it:
Run ftp://64.15.229.69. Open Public / Liveupdate/English_US / LiveUpdate 3.0 and double click the exe.file. Install and run it.
    (6) LiveUpdate now works and Outlook does as well. I can also now access the symantec web tech help.

I hope this helps others - I'm sure there will be other threads here all on the same subject so I hope the administator will pass on this advice.

I'll leave you with one thought - dare I now try run & update Spywareblaster again?:gack: Although not the cause, that started it. Is there anyone else who's had this who wants to try, having updated Live Update?

    Thanks for your help ;)

:) I should have explained in my previous post why I was unwilling to reload SpywareBlaster 3.5.1. straightaway.

It's because I tried several times to unistall what was still on my PC but I kept getting a message to the effect that there was no uninstal.exe file.

So I've just gone ahead, disabled NIS and installed 3.5.1 and . . . WOW!:D Everything works fine.

Many thanks to the company/person behind Spywareblaster - brilliant!

Thanks again for all the help & reassurance you gave me sort this out.

I too am having access problems to yahoo mail and search engine ect. plus it won't update. There was no problems with prevois version. I don't get PC froze or any problem. I am spyware/adware/virus/malware/rootkit free and I am very sure of this. In fact I use NOD and Kaspersky Personal Pro updated many times a day (KAV mainly since NOD doesn't update enough), I also use Spybot S&D latest, Ad-Aware Pro and there is no logical reason for problem other than I have noticed that http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/ is down when I just checked multiple times today (maybe maintenance?) also I DON'T use a firewall Windows built in junk one or otherwise (it's crap IMHO) and I don't use the other free or commerical ones as they are a useless and no more than bells and whistles that lull consumers into a false sense of security. A hardware firewall is better ...NAT box ect. I have no configuration problem and use WinXP SP1 with full updates (SP2 is junk and breaks more than it fixes but I won't go into that argument here ;)). Point is I no plenty about malware as I collect it for testing AV and such as a hobby and know I am not a victim of it since I no where to look for rogue enteries, processes, registry, ect. . The issue is Spyware Blater is NOT updating since the day v3.5.1 was installed and this has been the case every day since. The seems to be a real problem with the server end of thier site or a coding mistake pointing to the update site I don't no which yet. What I do know is the problem lies in the program or srver not the configuration of one's system (although I am sure there are exceptions to this) but I know I am not alone here and this is a bit frustrating and hope this issue is fixed soon. That being said I love this program and think the author(s) did a lot of hard work and I commend them and their GREAT efforts to proactively block malicious sites making everyones who uses this have an easier time with things. Any info regarding the site status was to whether site is being updated or having issues would be appreciated or any other insite into the cause of the problems. To the hard working author(s) thanks again for the wonderful app which protects many of us, it is indeed an invaluable tool in my collection. Peace all. And please don't delete my post thx. ;)

Never mind problem fixed. The update server for SpywareBlaster is back online. Got my bases uypdated for 159 new threats which are now all blocked against. Thanks Javacool Team great work for a great product! I'd donate money if I had any but maybe iun the future I can when I ain't perpetually broke like this past year...let's hope. ^_^
Hope everyone else's problem is solved as well now. Well I know I'm in business at least. Peace all.

Most users downloading the SWB program or trying to download updates have been hit by a Norton Internet Security (NIS) update that was dated 30DEC2005. It nailed my updates with SWB and also terminated all of my POP3 mail clients. This included my Outlook Express and my Netscape Mail client. I was extremely perturbed and was ready to go postal. I finally got thru online to Norton about 30 seconds before the phone support tech came on. Anyway, it took 3 calls/online sessions before I got a clue and "fixed" my NIS issues that were satopping all of my mail and updates. The problem I have is that I was so mad and frustrated I didn't take any notes of what I actually changed in NIS to allow things to work again. True, some of the latter updates should have cleared out the initial erroneous problem(s), but I have serious doubts.

I have seen NAV and NIS cause too many problems in a totally random environment. I used to work for the local cable company doing high speed intenet installations and too many service calls were directly related to customer's computer problems. I'll let your own imaginations run from here.

Bottom line, when you suspect a firewall, AV program or spyware blocker, simply try disabling the suspect for a 5-30 minute interval or outright disabled. Then try your installation/update process. If most of us would remember correctly, most new installations specify the termination or disabling of these at the onset of the install process. And closing all program windows also!

    Caio!

Norton Internet Security 2005 causes several problems on my XL machine. It worked perfectly until a December update. I just downloaded spywareblaster 3.5.1. The previous version operated fine. To make the manual update work and not freeze up, I have to disable Norton Internet Security for 5 minutes and then click the search for updates button. It works fine then and downloads all updates. When it's done, I enable NIS again. So that I'm protected on the internet, I have my XL firewall turned on at the same time NIS's firewall is on.

Same with Outlook Express. I have to disable NIS before I open outlook express so it will properly receive my emails with out getting error messages and no emails. I have to disable NIS before sending emails or they won't send too.

Same with my SmartFTP. If I try to get into my web site, I have to make sure NIS is disabled before it will connect to my web site.

Norton so far is blaming eveybody and everything but their program for these issues. I can assure you it all started when I received that December NIS update but they seem to have no answer. If they don't solve it, I sure won't buy their NIS 2006.:thumbd:

Hello everyone I'm a brand new member having been directed here by the people at Tom Coyote forums who have helped me clean up my pc which was infected with howiper.exe

First of all I am just about at first base with PCs and so my knowledge is very limited. I had never heard of spyware until last week I have Norton Internet Security 2005 which I regularly updated and in my ignorance/naivity thought I was completely protected!!! With a lot of patience on their part the Tom coyote people walked me through what I had to do to remove the howiper.exe

I have just downloaded the Spywareblaster for the first time and experienced the problems with the update referred to by others - essentially the screen freezes when I press the update prompt.

My problem is that I don't really understand much of what is in previous posts. I would be very grateful if someone would be kind enough to walk me through what I need to do literally step by step -Click this double click that etc. I don't know how to disable Norton and the thought of switching off the protection fills me with dread.

    Thank you in anticipation

    Norman

    Hi All!

Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2005 has a new update available 2-5-06. It corrects the SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 update freezeups. It also corrects Microsoft Outlook Express email malfunctions, Smart FTP not connecting and some others.

If you have any of these problems and NIS, download NIS updates now to enjoy resolution of all these problems.

    Thank You Norton!! Finally!

I would just like to confirm to everybody that the problem with NIS and Norton Personal Firewall has now been solved. I just installed the latest version of SpywareBlaster and have successfully updated the definitions with NIS enabled.

    All works fine.

Excellent - I'm glad to hear that they finally issued a working fix. :)

To anyone encountering update issues with the latest version of SpywareBlaster and Norton Internet Security: please run LiveUpdate to download the latest versions of all NIS files.

    Best regards,
