    Hi All,

Norton Internet Security 2005 causes several freeze-ups on my Windows XP machine. NIS worked perfectly until a December update from them. After the update I began having several other programs freeze-up and not function. It started with Outlook Express which wouldn't download my emails from my peoplepc email accounts. Then I tried to use my SmartFTP program to get into my web site and upload pictures. I couldn't sign in to my web site. Then I downloaded the new spwareblaster 3.5.1. and the manual update would not function and froze up. While downloading the new Adobe 7.0.1, updating from 6.0, the download site would not download to my PC.

After timeconsuming efforts to correct all of these issues, I found that if I disabled my NIS 2005, then clicked all of these funcions, they worked just fine. I have no doubt the the NIS update in December is not allowing my PC to turn on the web sites that will download emails, update or download other program updates, or get into my web site for updates WHILE NIS IS ON. Of course NIS 2005 isn't much good if you turn it off, so I turn on and use my XL firewall when I turn off NIS 2005.

If other people out there can identify program issues that NIS affects, then by posting them in this thread would help others figure out if NIS is the source of their problems. Apparently Norton is oblivious or doesn't believe their update is at fault. How about we all sent an email to them? :thumb:

You said you were using Windows XL. If that's anything like Windows XP, could you use System Restore to restore before the "problem" update?

In the future, if everything is working good why not just download the antivirus updates only?

With complex software, it helps to narrow the problem down to one module.
So, try disabling all the privacy stuff, disable the ad blocking (or allow everything), etc. Change the cookies, ActiveX, Java options to Allow. Try ONE problem application. If it doesn't work, check the Firewall Event Log to see if any rules were matched. If it works, try adding modules back one at a time until you find the culprit. Keep checking the various event logs. They will tell you what is being blocked by the various modules.

I'm not sure if there was a problem with a December update...I don't follow that stuff.

I just noticed there's a troubleshooting tool at this page...http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...ew=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=&seg=

I had something similar happen when I had NIS 2005. After some updates, my email wouldn't work, etc, so I used a restore point, and then everything worked. There several updates at the same time, so I began installing the updates one at a time, until I found the culprit, again using a restore point to get everything working. I sent a message to Symantec tech support, and apparently the update somehow caused a problem with the firewall rules. I had to delete them, and then reinstall. I could then download the update that was causing the problem, and everything worked fine. This may not be your problem, but it worked for me.

If the issue persists after downloading all updates, then this issue can occur if firewall rules are corrupted. In order to resolve this issue, please follow the document provided below:

    THANK YOU CLOUDCROFT!!

I started with the link you suggested:

The starting place they recommended was to download the most recent updates for NIS 2005. Of course I have been looking for one, but thought it would be the same as usual, no updates. Well this time on 2-5-06 there was an update. IT SOLVED EVERY PROBLEM I HAD!

    Thanks Norton.....Thanks CloudCroft.....And Thank God :thumb: :D

You're welcome, dodont! Glad you got the problem solved, as I know from experience it can be very aggravating.
