    I'm trying to backup a disk image using True Image 9.0 to an external HD (Maxtor One Touch 200G 2.0 USB). My computer crashes and reboots everytime I try to create the image which never completes. I can successfully create an image to an internal HD but that defeats the purpose of me getting the external in the first place. Is this a known bug? Sorry if this has been addressed before, I searched but couldn't find anything about it.

    A couple of issues which have been reported here that may apply:

    If you are using a usb hub, remove it and connect the external directly.
    If you are using a front usb port, try one at the back.

    Thanks for the reply. I'm not using a hub or a front port.

    I routinely backup to an external USB drive without problems.
    I can’t help you much, but if you tell us exactly when/where/how it fails, someone might be able to help.

    Thanks, It's failed during the image backup. If I look at the image file its somewhere between 60-90% done with the backup before Windows restarted. If I try to verify the image created, it doesn't recognize it as a valid image. I think it says something like 'selected file is not last known image'. Whatever happens during the backup is serious enough to crash Windows which gives me a 'recovered from serious error' message after it reboots itself. Should I try breaking the image into smaller files?

    Just for grins, have you tried to create an image on the internal HD and then copy it to the USB drive? Maybe there’s a physical problem with the external drive causing the re-boots. I think a 'recovered from serious error' usually points to hardware. Have you done a full scan disk on the USB drive?

    I was going to copy it to the external lastnight but ran out of time. I was also worried about restoring it from there if there is a problem. I'll do a diagnostics on the external tonight, thanks. Also, when I reported the error to MS it came back and said it was an issue with a device driver.

    MS is probably right. Acronis has many issues supporting various hardware, especially external drives. Check the forums for many similar problems.
    You can try smaller images or try using the boot cd. It wouldn't hurt.

    Hello pdskep,

    Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software.

    Please make sure that you use the latest build (2337) of Acronis True Image 9.0 which is available at: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/support/updates/

    To get access to updates you should create an account at:
    http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/my/
    then log in and use your serial number to register your software.

    Please uninstall any previously installed build by following Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs -> Acronis True Image, prior to installing build 2337.

    Note that you should create new Bootable Rescue CD after installing the update.

    If the problem still persists with the latest build (2337) of Acronis True Image 9.0 then please check each partition of your external hard drive by Windows utility:

    - For Windows 9x please use Windows menu Start\Run
    then enter the command "scandskw" and test all drives;

    - For Windows XP please use Windows menu Start\Run, then enter the command
    "chkdsk [drive letter]: /r" for every partition of your external hard drive.

    Please also download the latest version of Acronis drivers, install it with disabled logging, try to create an image saving it to the external hard drive once more and see if the problem still persists.

    If the problem still persists then enable logging by running the Acronis drivers installation package once again, reproduce the problem and collect the c:\snapapi.log file.

    Please also provide us with the following information:

    - Create Acronis Report and Windows System Information as it is described in Acronis Help Post;

    Please keep your external hard drive connected while creating Acronis Report and Windows System Information;

    - Create an image saving it to the internal hard drive and then copy the resulting *.tib file to your external hard drive using Windows Explorer. Let us know the result;

    - Boot your PC from Bootable Rescue CD created using the latest build (2337) of Acronis True Image 9.0 and try to create an image saving to your external hard drive once more. Inform us about the result;

    - Provide us with the exact vendor, model and connection type of your external hard drive.

    Could you please also do the following?

    - Open Computer properties either by right clicking on My Computer icon and choosing Properties or by opening System properties in Control Panel;

    - Go to Advanced tab;

    - Press Startup and Recover Settings button;

    - Choose Small memory dump in Write debugging information box;

    - Close all the dialog windows by clicking OK buttons;

    - Reproduce the system crash and collect the mini-dumps created.

    Please submit a request for technical support. Attach all the collected files and information to your request along with the step-by-step description of the actions taken before the problem appears and the link to this thread. We will investigate the problem and try to provide you with the solution.

    Thank you.

    This is way too hard and I've spent too much time getting to work. I tried downloading the drivers and it either crashes on me while downloading the drivers or it crashes on me after I load them. Also, I can't even recover from the boot disk from my internal HD since the software doesn't seem to support Raid 1. This has been about the biggest waste of time and money I've had on my computer in a couple of years. Of course it's my fault for not downloading the trial version first in order to save a few bucks. I guess it's back to Norton. It may be a pain in the ass but it works.
