Re: A new antivirus on the market?

Although I am not discrediting the people who posted this information, I would like to rebut against it.

Well, as people have enemies, it is very possible that IP addresses could have been falsified/lied about. All someone would have to do is whois "JoeJaroch" on IRC in an antivirus help channel and see what his IP is, and say that is 'VirusJoe''s ip. Joe does not have a static IP either, so, someone with the same internet provider could easily have gotten the same IP. I am currently with the same provider (SBC, Ameritech, whatever it is called now) and have a similar IP: 68.253.177.154. Another Tera guy currently has the ip of 68.253.177.53. Most of us live by eachother, in the chicagoland area which causes us to have similar IPs. Joe lives in an outer region of the northwest suburbs of Chicago - in Elk Grove Village, as shown by the whois on our server. I live in a nearby town called Schaumburg. Messages are easily fabricated, and if someone has enough time (~10 minutes?) they can make a reasonable story against someone that is totally false. Email addresses may also be fabricated. Fake emails can be sent with spoofed headers from anyone you wish (as seen in thousands of viruses)

One main thought is how could a virus writer randomly think to make an antivirus program and expect to get any samples from it? We are having a hard enough time right now trying to get samples with a legitimate operation going on. We have a full version of a fully working antivirus program on our website. After looking at many viruses, it is obvious that virus writers do not have the drive and ambition to make something very complex and well written. I believe our product is well written and it looks very professional and does exactly what it says it does.

Another point to make for being legitimate is the fact that we are legally incorporated, have purchased VeriSign IDs and have trademarks on our intellictual property. I do not know many virus writers that would publically put their names out and pay thousands of dollars for these things.

When we lost our access into Jotti, a friend of ours also lost his access apparantly because someone had taken over his account. We were the people to refer him to Jotti in the first place, so, I am unsure if assumptions were made that in the event he stated Tera Innovations in the email, he was immediately banned, but that doesnt seem fair to have the name of a company tabooed.

After finally hearing what evidence was 'gathered', I am glad to know what convictions stand in the way of our organization - an IP address and a text based log. There are 8 million people living in Chicago. Probably ~200,000 have the name Joe. I have a brother named Joe, a good friend of mine is named Joe, and one of my college professors was named Joe.

    Take these thoughts into consideration,

I am unsure. We do not sort samples by virus author, and a perliminiary search on Google found nothing. Do you have any names from any virus program (IBK) that he created?

Well, as I said, it brings to no end. So it has no sense to continue about this. I know to what believe and why. What the others believe or not believe - it is up to them.
As soon as your product is finished enough and not like it is now, it could be interesting to see what it detects and what not.

If you ask: VirusJoe said to develop Sybertrek and later name changed to TeraInnovations.

P.S.: could it be that you are a good person but you do not know if the president Joe maybe did strange things in past?

I'd have to say that at this point in the drama, TeraInnovation's (TI) is on the ropes.

A reasonable doubt has been created.

At this point, I would not even consider trying their product.

I'd suggest that TI bring more weight to the table in this court of Wilder's public opinion.

Whoops - antivirus = virus in the previous post.

Frank - in a world of virtual machines and ways of testing programs securely, why wouldn't anyone try ViruScape?

Telling people not to try a no-obligations trial of a program is just mean. There is no reason to say this.

Although it is impossible to be sure of anything these days, I would trust Joe with anything - my credit card, my kids (when I have them) and my wife. I really believe that this information was falsified or atleast modified and am not just saying that because he can read these posts ;)

I find the attacks on Tera Innovations absurd. A shame that Wilders allow this at all. It's so easy to blame and put shame on people or products and if it is done here it's extremely harmfull. So I will test the product absolutely and I hope to see it done by Av-comparatives too... maybe just for the heck of it to see if the program is any good when it is out of beta.

It all counts on one thing only: is it a good program or not?

Nothing less but definitely nothing more.

He means when the program is "finished" and released in a full working form then it will suitable for proper testing and comparing to other antiviruses

Until that time it is speculation about it's effectiveness

I must say that I agree about the comments . IBK made his point . It is well taken . I , for one , WILL be trying out Viruscape to see how it compares . It would be good for others to do this too . I am interested in this product . I will try it in about a week . Thank you David , for bringing all this info out for us to see . All things being equal , I just want to see how well it works . Period ;)

Re: A new antivirus on the market?

I certainly don’t mean to be mean or even disrespectful.

For me personally, product discrimination (that is, analysis or methodology in choosing one product over anther to trial) is important.

Many of us don’t have the technical proficiency to deal with major issues of ‘trialed products gone wrong,’ and many of us don’t have the time to trial many different products -- but only a few.

So in choosing what products to trial, the integrity of the leadership of the company certainly is a factor for me.

I’ve read every post on this thread, and I believe a reasonable doubt has been raised both to the integrity of the company management, and also to the proficiency of the product.

That stated, I concur that we all make mistakes in life, and if that was the case, good for Joe for ‘cleaning up and going straight’ – assuming that is the case. Bring the past to the table honestly, and state the course for the future.

I also realize that there is a possibility that the doubts raised in the thread have no merit. If that is the case, that is bad (on many levels). But it appears that those who have raised the doubts have some facts and knowledge and also a track record to give credibility to their concerns. Based on this, I would once again state that it is you (your company) that bears the burden of proof, or at least additional information – if you are concerned with the perception of many on this board.

I love entrepreneurs. I love those who work hard and produce something. But I also am skeptical of those who may have something to hide or have unscrupulous pasts.

I hope you are legitimate and working hard at a start up venture that brings new energy and vibrancy to your field.

Re: A new antivirus on the market?

I'm paraphrasing. It's been said, "Doesn't matter who they are, what they did etc. It's just the product that counts."

Not about this particular product. But there is a company that makes an AV, an AV suite, a firewall (I believe) & a defragger. This company spreads lies that destroy people. I wouldn't touch their products. Their products are said to be among the best. Especially the defrag program. But I like O&O & PerfectDisk better. Said such company is owned by people that charge specifically for their "spiritual" enlightment. Which "philosophies" can be found for free at the public library under Science Fiction.

So to sum up my point. I care that the software I use is made by people that I don't want to puke on. Course I don't know about this particular AV & it's makers.

    Hang in there.

I too think you guys are worth trying out. And I will do so when i have the time.

BTW, the reaction you are getting here on wilders is about normal for any new AV. There is $$$ at stake as well as egos...

Re: A new antivirus on the market?

Finding out about a program even to the point of knowing who's behind the program is not bad but a somewhat personal assasination is where a line needs to be drawn IMHO.
As you well know eventually We....and members included....do what we can in seeing that certain comments are not common. One way that is done by asking as has been done twice to keep to the topic which is the Viruscape program and not the person.

Hopefully thru the process of the interchange....good and bad....We will have an opinion months down the road of how well this program is.

Having said all that....numerous posts removed and any others posted not related to the program but directed toward a person will be removed without comment.

TIA for everyones help in this matter,
    Bubba

Lol . And I KNOW of whom you speak .
Well , look at how many have viewed this thread . WOW . I hope they will get a fair shot . Regardless of the past . Good or bad . Remember the white hat / black hat deal . Who knows what they have to offer without them getting a shot ? I am looking forward to the improved ( reduced f/p s ) engine in the next week or so .

Re: A new antivirus on the market?

I will just make one further comment

At the moment the product is in BETA

Beta means not fully functional or fully tested so be very careful and only test it on your computer IF you can afford to wipe it out completely if it all goes wrong and ALL beta products carry that very high risk.

I do not advise relying on testing an Antivirus on a virtual machine as there are differences between the way a VM works and a full install especially with embedded malware

It's not enough with an AV to just see whether it detects a selection of samples on your computer but you do need to see how it works with other software on the computer as well

I do strongly urge anybody thinking of trying it out to make sure that they have a full complete backup of everything before trying ANY beta software

Maybe MR President can be more competent to answer all these questions. Im sure that many other also expect him to come and say something.

I gotta say that i agree that it is sad that these attacks on a software developer can happen here, even sadder it is a eset mod & a so called A/V expert that is leading the flames & attacks.

4 pages of attacks against someone who is friendly & is trying to further his program before a mod says anything, just like real life there is one rule for those in charge & a different rule for everyone else.

Re: A new antivirus on the market?

I have to fully agree with this also. I do not know what (allegedly) went on (or from reading the allegations even can understand them), i.e to me it seems obvious that someone who is studying computer science would be interested in collecting details about viruses, especially if their future goal is to make an antivirus. As if it were me, i know if i were interested in making an antivirus i would be taking an interest in finding the structure of current in the wild viruses too, but that is just me i guess).

But this gentleman who has took his time to come here to post today seems like a very friendly and geniune person and definitely someone who clearly cares about his product (i.e someone who is not out for a quick malicious fast buck).

I will definitely keeping an eye out to see the progress you make in the coming months with your software, David, and definitely hope you do well.

P.S if someone came on here today and said they worked as a developer for Virgin Mobile, would all the senior staff go on an insult barrage because they do not like something Richard Branson had once done. I hope not!. But like i say i honestly know nothing of what has allegedly went on so i will keep out of this part of this discussion.

    Anthony.

I wonder how far it would have been allowed to go if it were NOD32 being drilled like this.
Just one of those things that make you go...hmmmm.

I do not want to get into this kind of debate on which antivirus is better than which, as there are a number of factors involved.

We decide to leave it up to the end user with which one to use. It is their decision and it should not be influenced by anyone else.
