I'm trying (before buying) True Image 9 and have found out that it consitently fails to properly backup or restore my Linux partition (SuSE 9.3). The problem seems to be in backing up or restoring GRUB, which is installed on Linux partition BR (hd0,2). I can only boot to SuSE after re-installing GRUB to (hd0,2). Fortunatelly, I still have old PowerQuest DriveImage which doesn't have any problems restoring SuSE with GRUB. Makes me wonder if this is a problem related only to GRUB and how reliable is ATI if I had to restore Windows Partition? Before I commit to replacing DriveImage with ATI I'd like some answers.

    Hello mprezgot,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software.

If you back up and then restore an image of the whole hard drive, you do not need to reactive the GRUB.
If you back up and restore the image of partition, you should reactivate the GRUB to boot your computer properly.

Please note that if you try to manage your Linux partition in some way, you need to reinstall the GRUB.

Please note also that this issue does not relate to Acronis True Image 9.0, it's just the GRUB's specificity.

Please visit Acronis online store to purchase the full version of the product.

Please also note that we have a flexible system of discounts and the amount of the discount varies depending on the number of copies you want to purchase.

In case you are planning to purchase many copies, please contact our Sales Team at sales@acronis.com.

    Thank you.

As I stated before DriveImage doesn't have any problems dealing with GRUB when restoring only partition on which Linux and GRUB are located, so I think it is Acronis TrueImage issue.

    Hi,

I've also mentioned this on a couple of other occassions. I have Drive Image too and it has no problem restoring my Linux partition with grub installed. I would use TI exclusively but I can't for this reason. If Drive Image can do it, True Image should be made to do it.

I have have a similar problem with backing up and restoring Suse using Snap Deploy. The problem appears to be that after the Image Creation app is loaded it does something to GRUB which prevents Suse booting properly and so the image which is created also contains the problem which prevents Suse booting.

I am working with the support guys to get this sorted.

The question here is: Is TI really backing up sectors on hard drive (like DriveImage does) or is it backing up files. This would explain why it can't backup or restore sector where GRUB resides.

    Hello mprezgot,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software.

Acronis True Image program uses a special method of "snapshot" image creation, it doesn't store the standalone files or directories, but saves blocks of hard drive data, saving the information about disk/partition geometry.

Please note that if Acronis True Image 9.0 doesn't recognize a file system (it supports only Linux Ext2, Ext3, ReiserFS, and Linux SWAP), it uses the sector-by-sector method to back up a partition.

Please be aware that Acronis True Image 9.0 formats the partition before image restoration while Drive Image doesn't do it.

    Thank you.

Maybe it would be wiser if TI would backaup Linux Partition (Ext2, Ext3, ReiserFS...) sector by sector, like it does with unknown file system types. This way GRUB would be backed up and later restored as well. I think I will wait with my purchase untill this GRUB issue is resolved.

Competitor advertisements have been removed - let's try to keep in mind that this is the Acronis support forum. Since the posters have chosen against Acronis anyway, this is no longer a support issue and I'll close the thread now.
