An interesting observation is that when I backup a 12 GB partition to an external USB drive that is formatted with FAT32 the backup takes around 6 hours. When I backup to a partition on the same external drive that is formatted with NTFS the same 12GB paritition TI9 reports it will take around 14 hours.

The backup to the FAT32 partition always shows up as corrupted when I try to restore, but passes the check archive test on both the source and destination system. I'm running a test now backing up to the NTFS partition, so it will be interesting to see if it works or not.

Anyone else observe the same performance issues?

Even 6 hours for 12Gb is too long. I recently imaged 8 Gb out of a 30 Gb hard drive on to an external usb hd and it took about 25 minutes. By any chance is your usb port only version 1.1 and not ver 2? If it is you should install a card that will give you usb ver 2.

I likewise backed up a 8.5 GB image on my 160GB internal to a USB external and with verifying afterwards, it only took 15 to 20 minutes. Both are NTFS.

Rule 'o Thumb as confirmed by prevous posters - Local USB 2.0 drive, aprox. 1.0 Gb/min to create image based on used disk space. About 0.5 Gb/min based on final normal compreesed size of image.

Sorry, I should have been more explicit. I'm backing up a partition within a VMware virtual machine. It is a USB 2.0 port, but because of the virtual machine mechanics TI9 runs very slowly. When I run it on the main machine it works at good speeds.

My comments were more around why it takes so much longer when writing to an NTFS partition over the FAT32 partition.
