I installed BOClean on my brothers computer some time ago, and paid for the extended download service. I realized he has the older version of the program, so just downloaded and installed the new version, and the menu bar is titled, "BOClean 4.20.003". Is the 4.20.003 a "typo" in the menu title bar?

    No, it isn't a typo.
There is a newer version 4.20.003 indeed.
What exactly the situation and info is about 4.20.003, I don't know at the moment.
My guess, for the moment, is that it might solve some problems that some folks might have seen with 4.20.002.
My guess, for the moment, is that 4.20.003 is only meant for those that might have a problem with 4.20.002.
Please, and please again "please" (!!!), let's not forget it is Christmas and Holiday time.
I have installed 4.20.003 on my own W98SE box, and a few hours ago on XP-Home boxes of a friend who has a licence for BOClean too.

You don't need the new build, unless you are having problems with high cpu usage.

    Thank you for your reply.
To be truthful I only check high CPU if I notice something 'not quite right'
I did have a few conflicts with the old version and NOD32 but thought the new one had fixed this.
I used to check a lot but it was ending up in stopping some security which would have been worse.

I will check the linked post to make sure but hopefully I am fine with the version installed.
    Appreciate this advice.

When BOClean sent me the new version on December 19, it was 4.20.003. The CPU useage on my 2.4GHZ P4 is now only about 5 percent peak, whereas it was about 10 percent for version 4.12.

EDIT: I just reinstalled BOClean 4.20.003, and it only uses about 1 percent peak (with the other processes also about 1 percent, for a total of 2 percent). I now think 4.12 used only about 5 percent, but it has been a while since I last used it.

    I tried .001, .002 and now.003... not a big fan of any 4.20 versions.

Pretty invasive (slower bootup, apps opening, installs, uninstalls, etc...) on my system (2GHZ Pentium M laptop, 1GB RAM, 80GB 5400 RPM HD) whereas 4.12 was not.

I don't use BOClean any more. Nothing against Kevin or Nancy, but I hope the next version is rearchitected with a different approach and fixes the problems I'm experiencing.

Running ZA 6.1, NOD32, SS 4.5 of XP Pro SP2.

LOL and I like my firewall so I'm not changing it Kevin. :D

Sorry to hear of your troubles with BoClean. Opinions differ and that's what makes a market for a certain product I guess. For me ZA would be the one to go. I had more trouble with it, however the slowness trouble with either one was very small. Trial and error over the years has shown me that ZA 5's and below slowed my machine more then BoClean. I have not used any of the 6 version unable to say on that. I do believe BoClean's real time "sniff" seems just a tiny bit slower then past versions. But again the differences seem so small to me. And your machine has right much more "horsepower" then my old compaq. :doubt:

It may be that my expectations are less then yours too.

What do you use for trojan/keylog protection?

When I can count the seconds that a new version of an app adds on to processes after being installed... I consider it a pretty telling sign. .003 is an improvement over the previous two versions, but still not acceptable for me.

Other thing you have to remember is that based on my own personal experience, BOClean has little value add these days. In the last 18 months, only things BOClean has caught are false positives.

AVs are doing a pretty good job detecting malware lately and people are less likely to put up with apps that impact their system performance when that additional layer has not proven itself. Given my experience with BOClean, I don't think it is necessary any longer for my piece of mind and does not enhance the security on my computers.

SpySweeper 4.5 and NOD32 give me solid trojan/keylog detection.

Latest version of ZA Pro is decent from a resource standpoint. You should check it out.

Funny how different systems compare. I did not consistently use any of the 4.12 versions because of the high CPU usage and this included special builds.

In contrast, 4.20.003 is as light as a feather with the 10s CPU spikes of less than 2% here ;)

So with no performance/CPU hit I am happy to use BOClean again. But I admit that whether you need to use it depends on your other security software. On one of my computers here I have an AV which is supposedly weak in trojan/backdoor detection so BC runs alongside it as extra cover. On another machine I have KAV as the primary scanner so BC takes a backseat on this box.

Yup, boot up takes longer but I am MORE than willing to live with that for the safety BoClean gives me. If the new BoClean is doing an even a better job of protecting me then before during bootup, then so be it. If there is one thing that computing has taught me for the past 6 years, it's be patient. Other than the slow bootup, the only other difference that I notice is a positive one, less CPU usage, in fact, almost none.

Perhaps one of the reasons why it's more noticeable in my case is due to the dynamic CPU clocking in Centrino laptops. Regardless, there has to be a better way of architecting the app that results in less polling. As mentioned though... with all the security issues in the last 18 months... NOD32, Spysweeper and KAV have all caught something other than a FP, BOClean has only caught FPs.

Perhaps a different way to look at it is to ask yourself... How many diapers do I put on a baby?

This is pretty much where I am in using BoClean for now. I still like it. BUT...When more money is asked for to obtain the 5 version. I will be taking a hard look at BoClean vs Ewido and others maybe. Costs, security, how well the AVs are doing in the catergory as Taz referenced above in his response and also my new system when I replace the old Compaq with a new machine. It will be built to my own needs and running new Windows VISTA OS. With so many variables going on there it will be difficult to predict what I will decide. For a few months I might be on overload o_O

Note: I am runnng .002 and my CPU useage ranges from 2 to 9%. Most of the time closer to 2. I am behind a router firewall so I manually start up Outpost software FW after everything else is up and going. You want to talk high CPU useage OutPost is 10 steady with spikes to 20. Something I just noticed. Several of the standard plugins are turned off. No extras. Not the Anti Spy one it is on. Again the Compaq works great but it is old and tired.

Since KAV & some other antivirus (AV) programs have gone so heavily into *antitrojan (AT) territory*, I wonder why the excellent antitrojan programs do not respond in kind. That is -- why not a "BOClean AV/AT" that covers the full spectrum of what KAV & similar AVs are covering? I'm serious about this. I'd buy a BOClean AV/AT in a heartbeat. That's because: (1) I greatly respect Kevin's know-how, & (2) I would hate to see BOClean go the way of TDS.

Let's all face it no matter if you want it or not, Security Suites are the wave of the future in PC security. Sooner or later all great PC security products will be this way. If done right they will go on to be a Suite of fine products. :doubt:

You will either sell out, discontinue or produce your own, it is going to be the way it is. :ouch: Time will only tell what Kevin decides to do and how long it will be.

Anyway that is what I think will happen. Kevin may tell me, "No way Mercuire you are a DOE DOE Bird". :D

The worst that could happen for just one example: is outstanding AVs get matched up with poor firewalls in a Suite of products. This sort of thing. :'(
