I was thinking about giving this service a go. Anybody here us it? If so, what are your thoughts on it? From the use of other proxies i have noticed slowed down surfing, does anonymizer slow you down alot?

Also, if anybody can help shed light on their various services, one purports to have secure email and surfing along with newgroups, and chat via SSL secure tuneling?? The other service used to just say it encrypted webpages but now says SSL? Any info and 1st hand experience would be greatful.

    Thanks,
    Jonas

    Hi Jonas,

if you wanna use anonymizer software and/or services you must know, that all of them will slow you down! That's what you have to pay for anonymity! And all are working with some sorts of proxies. The best tool I ever found was Stealther. It was by far the fastest one -if it's still like that I don't know. All the other services I was testing were terribly slow... :p

    http://www.photonosoftware.com/Stealther/savelanguage.php3?jump=/Stealther/main.php3&language=eng&reseller=7348

Hope that helps you out so far! ;)

    Best regards,

    Patrice

    Thanks Patrice,
Actually i've used the Stealther, along with proxies for Proxo before. From what i've read though, the Anonymizer seems to go beyond just simple proxy use...via a secured encrypted connection via SSL to its servers so even your ISP cannot incercept your communications, including email, newsgroup and chat.

I look forward to hearing from those that have used this product/service.

    Thanks,
    Jonas

    Hi Jonas,

LOL :D Please, don't believe everything which they mention on their homepage. This is a marketing issue. Ever heard about Carnivore?

    http://www.robertgraham.com/pubs/carnivore-faq.html

    http://www.epic.org/privacy/carnivore/

Every ISP has it installed. They couldn't do anything against it. After September 11th the whole situation is even worse than before. Now they can force the ISP to do almost everything they want. Keep that in mind, Jonas! ;)

    Best regards,

    Patrice

So i guess the question still remians, has anybody here tried this software/service and if so what were your results/experience?

P.S. in previous post i refered to SSL but i also read on their website that they now can use tunneling software SSH to basically secure all internet trafic. Anybody here familar with SSH?

    Thanks,
    Jonas

jonas, patrice is wrong. it's not just marketing.

secure tunneling uses the software they give you which is probably fsecure or similar ssh software. it *cannot* be tracked by your isp. it is encrypted from your pc to the anonymizer. you would think patrice would know that. ssh is just marketing? it is a great service.

    Dear novirusguy,

:D I think you didn't get me right about what I wanted to say. SSH is a secure standard (at least at the moment) and I never wanted to say that the communication is insecure between your computer and the server! But if you sign up at Anonymizer.com (for example their product Dialup Internet Access) you have to consider them as your "new" ISP. Please don't get me wrong, I'm talking about the macro level and not like you did about the micro level:

Your "new" ISP guarantees you a secure communication with SSH. But what do you think is the government of the United States doing about it? Don't you think as well, that after the September 11th a lot of things have changed? The US has a new law which allows its Secret Service to collect data which could prevent a new terrorist attack. Please don't misunderstand me, I won't talk about politics! Like that they were able to install a little nice black box behind every ISP's servers. The ISP's were forced to allow it. That's where Carnivore comes into the game. When I read your post, I realized that you are completely unaware of Carnivore and all that stuff. Perhaps you would like to read it more closely to have some clues what it is.

So what does this mean in general? Even if your ISP communicates with you via SSH, they still can track you and read your data if they consider you as a potential target. It's their right, because it has to do with the national security. O.K. I don't wanna go into that any deeper, as I'm sure you understand now what I wanted to say. And besides, you are completely right what you said about SSH! ;) But perhaps I should have clarified what I meant more precisely.

Now, I would like to say something about the Marketing issue. Let's say Marketing is my job... I know what I'm talking about when I say it's a Marketing issue. Let's state it like that: Overall you exaggerate a little bit with your products -even the best product isn't perfect. But you just show the good sides of it. That's Marketing and that's how Economics work. ;)

    Kind Regards,

    Patrice

no. Anonymizer does **not** become your isp. they *do* offer that service, but again, you have it all wrong. secure tunneling uses SSH software (secure for the momento_O) with your ***current*** internet porovider. you are obviously thinking about SSL, which is completely different. you have MUCH to learn. while learning, it might be best to kick back and do just that before coming across as the one answering questions from people like you know what you are talking about. i have read a lot of your posts and you write so many things that are just plain wrong and worse yet, even on the most basic things. good luck.

    Hi novirusguy,

:D LOL I see, I'm not able to make you understand what I wanted to say. You are still talking about the micro level and I'm talking about the macro level. Shortly said, there's no 100% security even though you are using their service. I'm sure you get me wrong again, but o.k. if you know it better, this is o.k. for me! Because our discussion leads to nowhere, I won't answer any more posts of you in this special thread.

And yeah, you are completely right! I have MUCH to learn! Absolutely correct! I have to learn all my life! If you would read what is written below my post, you would have got that much earlier already. ;)

    Have a very nice day!

    Patrice

not sure about macro or micro but your posts above speak for themselves. is is not a matter of my not understanding you.

    1. anonymizer does NOT become your ISP with their secure tunneling service. It uses SSH *software*.

    2. carnivore is of no use with secure tunneling connections.

    3. with anonymizer, no logs are kept with the secure tunneling service.

    4. anonymizer is not exaggerating when they say secure tunneling is safe. it is not marketing. many things are these days, but sorry, not here.

    5. you said our discussions lead nowhere. you are wrong. our discussions lead readers of this forum to the truth as to what carnivore can and cannot do and with ssh as it has no effective use when you are using secure tunneling, that you don't have to sign up with anonymizer as your ISP to use secure tunneling, that you obviously had ssh and ssl confused. our discussions have led other readers to understand that on many things you have simply been wrong.

if that's the case why have you posted 568 times since you signed up only 45 days ago? why are the vast majority of those posts not asking questions but *advising* readers on topics? that's the problem! you have 568 posts in 45 days and your advise is sorely lacking. i have read *many* of your posts and it's just the truth that an astonishing number of them are wrong in their advise. not just a different opinion, but wrong factually.

don't blame you a bit! what can you possibly say?

you too have a good day.

    Thanks all,

I don't know the technical side of the anonymiser type programs....
I tried Stealther and Anonymiser last year for a short time.
The only observations that I had was that both programs will slow you down noticably on a dialup connection(which was slow to begin with!).
    Stealther was a bit faster.
I only "dabbled" with the free services.

I used it for a while and after getting nagged to death to upgrade, including redirecting me from my surfing at hand, it got uninstalled in less the 30 seconds.

It made surfing slower and I guess I was unwilling to fork over the dough necessary to get a good look under the hood. Kicking the tires proved unextraordinary for sure.

Sorry its a bit late. Here's my Billybob setup ...

I have a Linux NAT box that runs SSH and a Web Proxy. This Linux box uses the Anonymizer SSH Tunnelling Service (yes I paid for it). My LAN PCs as well as using VPNs, tunnel their traffic via SSH to this Linux box which in turn, tunnels the traffic to Anonymizer and then out to cyberspace. I can tunnel most things like Web (including this post!), IRC, News, Email etc. The Linux box can block entire domains eg Microsoft.com (even though I own their software, their SS (WindowsUpdate etc) have no right to snoop). Of course, each PC runs a firewall and other security tools are running.

Its not that much slower (I'm not on 56K modem) but it is if you login to their website with your browser and use the Encrypted SSL setting for surfing. I don't most of the time but sites still can't see me (such as Web browser test sites).

If someone did discover the LAN PC's addresses, they are Class C so they won't be able to do much with em he he. The Linux firewall on the other hand, tells em to f*** off. You can setup LAN PCs to have no default TCP/IP gateway as well.

The Anonymizer is a nice warm privacy blanket IMHO and worth the money. However, its your choice ...

    OK

    I HAVE ANONYMIZER!!

    I HAVE STEALTHER TOO!

I've had them both for a year!!! I have tested them and tried them out thoroughly and I KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT BECAUSE I SPENT MY MONEY ON BOTH OF THEM.

    1. STEALTHER WAS VERY DISAPOINTING FOR ME. Unless you have a 1500 DSL connection the Super Stealth will slow your internet browsing to a crawl. I installed it yesterday again to see if it had improved and it's still quite slow on Super Stealth but improved on Stealth. I sent the guy an email and he said that he now has newer and faster servers but it still doesn't always connect properly to the servers and I got many timeouts so I uninstalled it.

    2. Now - as for ANONYMIZER. SIMPLY THE BEST!! I bought it 9 months ago and found that it always connected, the servers were FAST even VERY FAST!! I noticed NO SLOWING DOWN OF MY INTERNET CONNECTION WHATSOEVER ON THE NORMAL AND MEDIUM MODE AND JUST A SLIGHT SLOW IN SPEED ON FULL SSL SECURITY.

NOW FOR MY STANDARDS THAT'S IMPRESSIVE!!

I would ALWAYS BUY THEIR PRODUCTS AND WOULD ALWAYS ADVISE OTHERS TO BUY THEM. Their products are top notch and really work.

I also bought and had FREEDOM a similar program but the browsing was always very slow.

My advice - ANONYMIZER. It works and is fast. I was very happy with it and never ever had any cause to complain about the product or browsing speed. It seems to be the only one which really works without affecting speed too much. I haven't tried Steganoes yet but from what I've read many complain of slow servers.

    Regards

    Dave
