My Norton AV is almost out and I can get McAfee AV free with Comcast, so I thought I would download it. But I wanted to keep my Norton for the rest of the subscription, and just disable it to make sure I will like the McAfee. When I went to download it, it told me to uninstall and completely remove my old anti virus before installing. So, I didn't download it, but I want to find out if I can just disable Norton, try the McAfee until the end of month when it runs out.

Can I do this safely, or must I just uninstall Norton first?

What do you mean by high to system? And which is better McAfee or EZ? I can get EZ free for one year and am having hard time deciding which. Appreciate your answer and anyone else that has a preference.

McAfee is better than EZ, but my system (1,6Ghz, 352Mb RAM, WInXP Pro) becomes slow with McAfee.
However, I prefer Avast or Antivir (both free) than EZ.

Personally I think Bitdefedner is better than McAfee, well thats my personal thought. Infact I think the top three are NOD32, KAV and BD.

According the av-comparatives, the combination KAV and McAfee is the best in detecting all kinds of viruses and I would add NOD32 to that combination for its best heuristics.

It's better to make a choice that is based on FACTS, than all these personal preferences of each member.
I really wonder how all these members make their final choice. Do they compare the definition databases of each scanner or is it just based on feelings ?
If an AV scanner, ever saved your computer, that doesn't mean it's the best. That is just a lucky experience. :)

The facts many times are not accepeted by users. I used NOD32 for a long time, but at one moment I started to receive many viruses by mail and NOD32 not detected it. After, I migrated to Kaspersky. To have facts the user that receive viruses need to test all softwares and try it for any time, comparing results and protection. I receive viruses four times in a week (or more) by infected mail (spam) and I can install one or other and verify the protection against the files that I receive. It can really be named as "fact". If I test software A for 15 days and it detects all infected files it's better for me than other that detects 80% of viruses in the same time. Based on my real experiences I can decide what's better AV for me.

That depends on how you treat your incoming emails.
I ignore/delete any email from an unknown source immediately, infected or not. So I don't really need an AV to scan my emails.
I don't even open these emails, no matter what the subject says, because I didn't ask for these emails.
My inbox doesn't even show a part of the contents of my emails, so I can't even read them unless I open them and I don't open them, because that's also dangerous. According my readings at SWI, some emails are able to infect you by just opening them.
If I treat my emails that way, how can I get infected by these emails ?

Only users, who can't control their curiosity, do open and read these emails, including its attachments and get infected this way.

Of course there are knowledgeable users, who like to know what kind of emails they receive and with what kind of malware these emails are infected, but these users have a very good reason and we NEED these users too. I guess you are one of them.
I'm not, because I don't have the required knowledge and I have a black/white attitude towards spam-emails in order to protect myself.

My philosophy is, when each average user would act like me, spammers/scammers would die without any effort.
Unfortunately most average users, don't do this and they keep spammers/scammers alive on the internet.
It's ironical or better dramatic, that the average user himself is responsible for the existence of spam-emails.
If it was a difficult problem, I would understand, but IGNORING/DELETING spam-emails is very easy to do.

Meanwhile, I keep on warning people in another forum for not being scammed by one of these MANY lottery scam emails, because these credulous people READ and even TRUST their spam-emails.
Their TRUST in these scam-emails is sometimes so big, I have to prove the scam, because they don't even believe me.

If you have other explanations, why users should read their spam-emails, please tell me. I'm willing to learn and understand any plausible reason, because I don't know everything.
Maybe I can learn something new from you :)

I agree, but I have a sister that opens all received files and don't listen me when I talk about viruses. I alway receive the same answer: "my friend don't send viruses to me".
    Ignorance!
And I share my computer with family... It's not good... ;)

bit off topic but I see people here are using Mcafee and bit defender so,

Friends machine has Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise 7.0, can I run bitdefender free along with it? or will there be conflict

btw for those who may not know, (not that folks round here don't know) oe can be set to not have "preview pane" enabled, so as to further reduce risk from virii infected emails, don't know which versions of oe may be different

Well that is a very good reason for needing an AV.
Family computers are often a problem, certainly when only one member of the family cares about malwares.
I've read several posts at Wilders about this problem.
I don't have to share my computer, that's an advantage and not everybody is so lucky. I will remember that one.

    Hey,

    as the name says, ENTERPRISE!

I don't want all the (extra) stuff in the enterprise version, simple a pro or home version..

But after McAfee AV 7 Home/Pro, they use these stupid internet installer and HTML GUI :(

    Hey,

yes I know, THAT is why McAfee is a no no!

I hate the online installer and I hate this HTML GUI (with ActiveX) and I don't want an enterprise AV, so I will only use the (really good..) McAfee AV Engine, without the other "****" :D

All other AV companies have good, even great GUIs and offline installer packages, but why not McAfee?!

Because they don't want more Users :p

Kaspersky AV and IS 2006 will be better than McAfee with a great UI or GUI and AV Engine and NOD32 v3, too :D

I only miss the ability to have an bootable emergeny ISO with GNU/Linux "remastered" Knoppix/Kanotix/etc. and full NTFS access (read/write), like with BitDefender 9..

    best regards,

    iNsuRRecTiON
