I don't know where I got the idea that you needed to uninstall before doing an upgrade. I checked the FAQ on the Acronis web and it sez that an uninstall in not necessary, however, we know that is not the case with 9.0.2323. I've been a TI8 user since early 2005 and never needed to read the FAQ :)

Vive la 8.0.937 which is rock solid for me on several machines to USB drives both local and networked. It is probably plain dumb luck that the hardware combinations and other installed software I have is compatible with TI8 and that I have never had a problem except occassionally I had to do a second reboot on a Rescue CD to get the Linux version running okay when doing a restore/clone etc.

Good luck all... I'll await your reports on the next build before resuming my testing of 9.0* My upgraded licence and $29.99US begs to be used.

An Upgrade should be just that - a process that replaces older files with newer files while at the same time preserving settings and passwords. I have TI9 running on dozens of desktops and end users simply will not go to the trouble of uninstalling and reinstalling and having to enter their long cryptic license key. I can barely get them to click five times to do an upgrade.

    Hi Mustang,

Thanks for the info, I'm not really interested in the files/folder backup, I already own Nero and its backup does a nice job of that - It results in an "image" which is actually a directory tree with an index, so I can recover files even on a machine without Nero (assuming I don't enable compression). Come to that even the free MS Backup solution works ok (though each version is completely incompatible with newer/older ones:-()

My main requirement is that the image backup/restore works 100% and that I can pull individual files out of an image.

Particularly concerned about boot drive backup/restore....

As well as the full backup, I really want to do either incremental or differential backups - any idea if this stuff works, and if you can plugin them?

Unfortunately the competitors don't sound a whole lot better, after being burn't by Norton anti-virus (bloated, slow, buggy and have to turn off most IE security to get their UI to work), I don't fancy their image s/w much either

    Cheers
    Mark

I am using TI8 B 937, and I have bought and downloaded an upgrade to TI9 B 2323. I have seen on this thread that upgrading from TI9 2302 to 2323 you have to uninstall, but what about going from TI8?

My question is, upgrading to TI9, do I need to uninstall TI8 and the registry entries?

    Hello beckygb,

Can't answer for TI 8.0 but, in any case, there is no need to worry about the registry entries - just uninstall via Windows Control Panel's "Add or Remove Programs" applet before you attempt to upgrade.

this is ridiculous. I have T8 installed but can't remake secure zone in the same partition in slave drive. So I bought T9 but have not installed yet but to bump into this thread

    Hello MSP:

Full backup/restore of the system drive is working 100% for me. As is restoring individual files from the backups. I can not answer if this will be the case for you. I did not have any corrupt image problems with build 2302, but others did. I have not seen any posts in the last two days about corrupt images with 2323. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

I have not tried "plugging" incremental/differential images. I only make full backups.

    Hello Mark,

Perhaps my observations in the thread titled <TI 9.0 Build 2323 - What Works and What Doesn't> can provide you with a few answers.

This is blatantly not true with build 2323.

    1. when will Acronis team fix this (with build 2324 as soon as possible, I hope)?
    2. the current threads make me nervous about updating my TI9 which seems to be working flawlessly at present ( I do not do file/folder backups, just image of my C: drive). If I must uninstall TI9 build 2302, can someone tell me if I must remove the Secure Zone first. I'd rather not because it contains my weekly backup of my machine.
    3. TI9 is a great product when it works. The update mechanism has been flawless to date. What has gone wrong?

It will not be a very merry Xmas unless this problem is fixed.

    Hi Maturin,

Merely uninstalling True Image does not remove the Secure Zone. Your backups will be safe.

Violating my religion, i.e., to not install demos, I've installed 2323.

No problem installing, but an attempt at recovering a few files demolished my system.
I'll cover details in anoter thread.

    Thank you Menorcaman:)

Unfortunatley when I checked the Secure Zone the program advised me that no back up existed. This was strange because TI9 performed a successful backup last Sunday!

I was not able to delete/remove the Secure Zone partition via Windows (XP SP2).

Therefore, booted my computer with the Rescue Disk and was able to (speedily) remove the Secure zone. Then I restarted the machine and removed TI9 via Add/Remove programs. TI9 build 2323 was installed without a hitch. Secure Zone was recreated after booting with the new Rescue Disk. Overnight (5 hours with maxiumum compression and verify backup checked - 120GB partition) C: was backed up into the SZ. When checked this morning, within Windows XP the backup is present and valid :-*

This is not as efficient as previous builds and was not agood use of my time

    Hi again Maturin,

I assume you meant that you couldn't remove the SZ via the Manage Acronis Secure Zone Wizard when running True Image in Windows mode? This is a known problem with Build 2302 and has been fixed in Build 2323.

How much of the 120GB is used space and do you have many multi-media files e.g. jpg's, mpg's, mp3's etc.?

Personally, unless you are very short of space on the destination drive/partition, I would never use the "Maximum" compression setting as it has a huge affect on the time to create an image (particularly if you have a lot of already highly compressed multi-media files). If possible, stick to "Normal" compression as I've found this to be the best compromise between speed and image size.

    Regards

Thank you for your interest in difficulties with TI9...

The SZ can be managed in the current build 2323 - excellent.

The HDD has nearly 60% freespace so I was surprised at how long it took to make an image.

When uninstalling, some software products do not delete their license keys, and related registration info, from the registry.

So if you later install the same, or newer version, the key is still there.
Does TI leave such info in the registry?

Out of curiosity - have Acronis fixed the slow USB support on their TI9 builds yet?

I'm finding restoring image files as well as transferring from a "plugged" image to be significantly below USB2 speeds.

    Thanks!

I wouldn't like to say for sure - it depends on which particular motherboard (or PC Card)/external HD enclosure USB chipset combination you are talking about.

    Hi anon2,

As far as my wife's new Acer Aspire 1691WLMi (Pentium M + Centrino chipset), using the boot rescue CD, TI definitely images and restores to an external USB 2 HD enclosure (Nec Chipset + 30GB IBM DeskStar) at USB 2 speed.

Best you download the trial version of TI 9.0 (currently Build 2323), uninstall any previous version or build of TI, install Build 2323 and suck it and see.

    Regards

Thanks - I'm already using the registered version of TI9 - I think it's v323 so no need to download the trial. I'll create a bootCD for the next time I need files off my image (usually I just plug the image) and see if it's any faster than from doing it within the Windows interface.

I hate to open this issue again, but we have been away for a bit and wonder if a Control Panel Uninstall of 2302 is still needed before an upgrade to 2323?
I have not downloaded 2323 yet as we just today got back.

Yes, there are acknowledged installation issues with build 2323 that require a manual uninstall first.

OK, I will try that. I believe it is just an uninstall from the Control Panel.

    Hello everyone,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software.

Please accept my apologies for the delay with the response.

I'm afraid that build 2323 of Acronis True Image 9.0 has a minor problem with the installer. Actually, only Acronis Bootable Rescue Media Builder is updated when the program is being installed over the previously installed build. I would therefore recommend you to uninstall any previously installed build prior to installing build 2323 of Acronis True Image 9.0.

Please also note that our Development Team is aware of this problem and so it will be fixed in the next build of Acronis True Image 9.0. We are really sorry for your inconveniencies.

    Thank you.
