Wishlist: Version history log

Make a TI change history page going back at least to version 7. For each build, list problems fixed, major new features, minor new features. Post link to this on the Updates page - a new column in the version table. (Of course, this suggests that other products could also have a change log.) You should have the information needed for this already; just a matter of copying together a few files, making it pretty and posting. I need this to see whether I want to take the time to download and install a new build (or purchase, download and install a new release). For examples, visit websites of many other software products.

Is there a way to set the maximum number of incremental or differential backups so as not to build up a huge number of same?

Given all the problems we see posted caused by inadvertent activation of the Startup Recovery Manager (SRM), at the very least, the Secure Zone Wizard default selection should be changed to "Do not activate the Acronis Startup Recovery Manager". Better still I would dearly love to see this feature removed from the Manage Acronis Secure Wizard and left to the Activate Acronis Startup Recovery Manager Wizard. This would ensure Users made a concious decision before overwriting their (possibly propriatary) MBRs.

Also, it would be most useful if the Startup Recovery Manager Wizard included an option to deactivate the SRM (naturally, the Wizard would require renaming to "Activate/Deactivate Acronis Startup Recovery Manager"). This would enable Users to reset their MBR without having to remove their Secure Zone (as is currently the case). It would be even better if, when activating the SRM, the User's current MBR is saved somewhere. Thus, when deactivating the SRM, the User's original MBR could be restored (very important for those people with special, hidden, recovery partitions e.g. Dell and Acer computers).

When restoring an image which is on several cd's, can we have the wizard inform you that....."To restore the image archive spanned over a several CD's you should insert the last volume first". Because the way it is now is very misleading because it asks for the first volume when you really are supposed to insert the last volume.

 

Increment File names

On full backup file names, have TI increment the file name (as it does for incremental backups) and also for subsequent incrementals file names..

This will prevent the issue of overwritting prior full backup (as it does now) and potentially, if the Full backup is stopped in mid stride for whatever reason, causing you to be without a full back as the original full backup file is removed in that case.........or

if the full backup up does not complete, leave the original full backup file intact (currently its deleted if the full backup is interrupted).

Id rather manage deletion of old backups then be without........or......add a feature to manage the deletion of old files after a certain date.

 

I've read some articles on the net about external SATA drives having better throughput than USB 2.0, Firewire 400, and Firewire 800. Here's a url showing a brief comparison test using a Cardbus external SATA card on a Mac:

The results should be comparable on PC's.

It would be of help to PC laptop users if True Image 8 or 9 could support Cardbus external SATA cards and drives. Here are three examples of cards:

There are several other card manufacturers and many other vendors. These just happen to be ones I found while searching around for info.

Please consider having True Image 8 or 9 support Cardbus external SATA cards and drives. Thank you.

wish TI would not need NetBIOS to find image server. Also that it would not try to log in as Anonymous or Guest when finding the image server. Trying to maintain high security with redundancy and reliable backups, but can't give up one for the other.

The "create Acronis Report and Linux system information (sysinfo.txt)" suggestion is offered frequently enough that Acronis should come up with some much more automated way to get this same info to the engineers, both getting the dump into a file and upload that file to Acronis.

I just set up a schedule with weekly backups, and daily incremental backups. I would like to see the Acronis scheduler use an option that is available under Windows' scheduled tasks. This option wakes the computer from standby to run a scheduled task. - feature has been already requested

I have my daily incrementals scheduled at 5:05 AM. I had to create a separate Windows Scheduler task to run at 5:03 AM. That way the Acronis TI daily backups will run before I wake up.

 

faster incrementals

Faster algorithm to do incrementals.

Why does it take so long to do incrementals.
For a 60G network backup, a full back takes ~6 hours and an incremental (200M) takes ~2 hours.
Shouldnt the incremental take only a few seconds, especially if not much has changed for the prior backup!
Shouldnt the algorithm just look for files dates/times and backup based on that?

Becuase of the long incremental time, its not something that can be sceduled frequently or when PC is in use and it takes up so much CPU time that it make the PC unusable for other tasks.

You may want to look at this post. Acronis TI does not use the file information to do incremental backups - it is sector based. Hard to believe, but it is NOT like other backup software.

I also found backups across a network to be ridiculously slow. It is faster for me to do backup to a local drive, then copy the file across the network.

Ok..good input. I suspected someing like that sector by sector. It takes a long time to do extremly small incrementals and due to that causes other issues for me like not being able to schedule incrementals whenever....... as it takes up so much time and CPU power.

On the network slowness, I found that Acronis works very well over the network especially when compared to Ghost 9. In my situtation it utilizes the network to the router allowed capacity (some of the PCs are running 100% CPU to keep up). I have a 100baseT network, so yes it takes longer then a direct IDE interface to another drive or even a USB2, but Acronis works to the maximum network capacitity allowed. I back up 4 pcs to a couple NAS managed drives so network setup backup is the most practical approach for me.

But again the long incremental backup times really make scheduling and convenience problematic when multiplied by 1 or 2 incrementals per 4 PCs per day.

The monthly fulls backups I can manage late at night so thats not a problem even for the 6 hours it.

My Wish List:

1) Add A Update Button To Check to see if their is a update and if one is found,A Dialog box pops up letting you know with details and A Link to access the updates page. (Many Users Have Been Requesting This Or A Download Button Since Version - feature has been already requested

2) Try to keep the download file size to A Minimum by not adding too many extras

3) split True image windows Version And Rescue CD Version into seperate downloads If The user Wishes as some users prefer Only The rescue CD Option.

 

I'd like to add a wish for:

The ablilty to disable the display of the "Press F11 for Acronis Startup Recovery Manager" message. I still want the F11 key to function like it does, just with no message displayed (or maybe the ability to set our own custom message, like "Now booting systems..."). The reason is invariably someone who has no business messing with the Secure Zone backups will see the message and go playing around/deleting valuable backups. If the message was not displayed, then only the users that need to access the Secure Zone would 'know' that pressing F11 during boot would get them there...

In addition/in lieu of the above, then the ability to password protect the Startup Recovery so even if they press F11 a password would be required for access...
