NOD32, PC-CILLIN, or Kaspersky?

I'm using the 30 day trial version of NOD32 and like it very much. For those of you who are seasoned NOD32 users, why did you choose it over PC-CILLIN or Kaspersky? I've tried PC-CILLIN and personally prefer NOD32. I'll be trying Kaspersky soon.

I'm looking for a premanent replacement for NAV.

It seems that Kaspersky has two versions of their personal AV program. There are standard features in NOD32 in which you have to buy the more expensive Kaspersky AV Pro version to get.

I didn't like PC-CILLIN too well. It only comes in a suite with a firewall that I'll never use. Why pay the extra $$'s.

I'm leaning towards NOD32.

 

No, that is not true, but it is true there is two versions right now, there won't be in a couple of months though, when version 2006 is released, a purchase of Personal 5.0 gives you a free upgrade to 2006.

 

BUT soon to be replaced by one version; KAV 2006.

Office Guard? Not essential. KAV Personal will do for most HOME users.

Take KAV 2006 beta out for a spin and have a look at the new features on the way.

 

Well let's start with pc-cillin. I trialed it when I needed a new av, but the interface were confusing to me.
The settings you can tweak are very limited + it slowed down my pc (not much though).

Kaspersky was too slow to scan (20+ minutes) and it felt alot like bloatware.
It also reported a total of 8 False/Positives during the month I trialed it.

I chose NOD because
- It's fast & lightweight
- It's heuristics kicks ass
- Lots of settings (which I like alot )
- Free program updates (no need to buy 2006,2007,2008 anymore)

I didn't like PC-Cillin for the same reason - lack of options. You can't find the word huerestic anywhere in the documentation. Just too little for me to take on faith. I don't need to pay for a firewall that I'll never use. I'm a faithful devotee to Kerio Personal Firewall and will keep it until the wheels fall off of it.

I installed Kaspersky this afternoon and it lasted 1 hour. The scanning was slow on my PC compared to NOD32.

I tried Grisofts's AVG 7.1 and wasn't happy with it either.

Of course I'm dropping Norton. NAV 2004 was the last good version for me. NAV 2005 became a resource hog on my PC.

I'm real close to buying NOD32.

 

Funny, i found NAV2004 to be a fat pig (with lots of bugs) while NAV2005 is ok again...

 

People talking about a hungry KAV/KIS should try the 2006 version. It's as light as it can get. Even lighter as NOD32.

 

I don't have any experience of Kaspersky although I am tempted to try it at times but don't because NOD32 has performed very well for me. Personally I have found PC-Cillin to be reasonably lightweight (compared to Norton it's a dream) but NOD32 wins.

PC-Cillin is more user friendly whereas NOD32 is more geek friendly. I wouldn't recommend NOD32 to my father but I would recommend PC-Cillin. I personally prefer NOD32 and find that it just does the job and the heuristics work well for me. I would recommend that everyone has Advanced Heuristics on.

NOD32 is the lighest weight and hardest hitting AV that I have ever used. It doesn't feature a firewall though but I am happy with my hardware firewall.

I've made up my mind to go with NOD32 as my permanent replacement for NAV 2005. I appreciate all the comments I've read. Thank you. Before I go to bed tonight I'll be the happy owner of a registered version of NOD32. It is wise to order the second year of updates at the same time? It will save me a few dollars over two years.

When NAV 2005 was installed it took my PC 120 seconds (2 full minutes) to completely come alive in WIN XP after the log on screen. I put up with this for a whole year. With NOD32 this takes 40 seconds. I have family members who were complaining about the extra 80 seconds and since my NAV 2005 subscription ran out 4 weeks ago I ran AVG for 10 days, PC-Cillin for 2 days, Kaspersky for 1 hour and NOD32 for all times in between. I never considered McAfee or Bitdefender.

 

Remember you don't have to purchase new versions. You will be able to download them free of charge as long as you have a running license. So if you save a few bucks by purchasing a 2-year license, I say go for it

 

Last night I bought 2-2 year licenses for NOD32. On for my PC and one for my son's PC. I got NOD32 to replace NAV 2005 and he got NOD32 to replace McAfee.

Good bye bloatware.

Well I don't know if it is lighter than NOD32 but it certainly is a lot lighter than KAV 5. I would say it's pretty close to NOD. But remember KAV 6 does more, has more features, than the current version of NOD (2.5); proactice defense.

Yes, the RTM appears to be as light as AMON, BUT don't forget this is still a beta. Therefore, this may change in the gold release, with all modules enabled (Web Scanner and ProActive Defense).

 

I find that KAV/KIS 2006 exceptionally light on RAM (lighter than NOD) but I find CPU use is still a bit heavier than NOD.

BTW, I am a KAV fan /owner but have great respect for NOD !! I just wish those two companies could merge ;-) Just kidding, without that rivalry Wilders would be boring !

 

It could very well be lighter than the current version of NOD, but all that can change once it goes from beta to final.
Also don't forget that NOD32 v3 is being developed as we speak. It's going to be a good year indeed

 

Hi, first post but i've been following this forum for awhile. been using Trend 2005 and spysweeper, but wanted to try KAV2005 after seeing the heads up to Newegg from here.

it immediately found 9 trojans and worms that Trend and webroot spysweeper missed :-( they looked like real trojans, some had names like worm and 1 was in a zipped file of a program downloaded from a P2P source.
and i also use spywareblaster and ad-aware, all updated. and i had Ewido free already too.

so now i'm sold on Kaspersky. I uninstalled Trend before the install and then uninstalled spysweeper. Then i downloaded KIS2006 and was running that for a week (until last weekend). i liked it and was patient with it training all the permissions. had everything on. that was build 222 then 226 had some weird crash, the network attacks thing, so i uninstalled and went to 227.

But the whole time i would have crashes in online games. Finally i was so frustrated i uninstalled KIS2006 and put Trend 2005 back on. anyone else have this problem? I'll still try KIS2006 when it's released, but right now the reboots and freezes keep me away.

 

Perhaps, you can say it's lighter than NOD32 according to RAM usage. But, CPU usage is higher than NOD32. And, disk scanning process takes more time. You must compare it according to CPU, RAM and Disk usage and performance indicators. the other sides of the coin.

 

KIS 2006 build 230 has a faster scan now.

 

Yes. it's faster than older KAV versions.

 

Why are you comparing betas to retails?
The stuff you think you'll recive may be removed in the final version due to bugs and what not.
