This is way off topic, but this is something I referred to a while back that for some reason, i find un-nerving. In the image window you can see that the background is deleted. In the layers pallet you can see there is only the mask, no background layer at all. In the plugin it shows the background, which has been deleted. To make it more confusing, this plugin was just opened. it was not even used while the image had a background.

I like to know what is going on!!! Software apps never tell you. I feel if I knew why this happens I would have a better understanding of the program and how to use it. I don't like guessing! (or do I?)

Do you mean that only the fact that you opened the plugin
without clicking on "ok" applied that effect instantlyo_O?

If that been the case I have no answer but a computer glitch
or a bug in the plugin.:doubt:

For instance the Autumn tuto I just made here with Adobe Photoshop,
I made it with Paint Shop 7 and obtained the same results as in
Photoshop or very close to them but when I tried it
with Paint Shop 9, with exactly the same same settings again,
I obtained very poor results. Why? That's computers!:doubt:

I mean if the background has been deleted how did it produce it? Maybe the sequence is not obvious. the small plugin in the upper left is opened after the background has been deleted in the larger picture. How can it show something that is now longer there?

This is definitely the last one in this series. I like the picture because for fans of Frank Herbert's, Dune, it appears to be a bene geserit witch!

The plugin used was NIC Color Effects. They are like real camera filters. Tinted to let some colors through and not others. They are pretty hard to use for me.

I guess the background thing isn't so strange, it's just unexpected. I think some plugins cannot work without a background for some reason. They probably either need the colors for stitching the edges, or for color averaging, or who knows what. It's just that this all goes on behind the scene. One thing that is useful to know, if you use plugins. Some do not work nearly as well without a background. Lacquer is in that group. You have to take extra steps to make sure there is a background.

That last one was very nice!
Now to your question (it's what we were talking about the other day)...
I suppose the 'remnants' (not the right word?) of an edited image has to be stored in memory or temp files or somewhere..... basically because how would you 'undo' various steps in your editing....
Interestingly an app like Cleanup finds tons of temp files, and quite a few of those appear to be related to image editing. For instance, I ran it last night clearing 56Mb of temp files!
Also, when you look at an app like this, it appears that a lot of additional data can be stored with the actual image itself.

Re: Paint Shop Pro & PhotoFiltre Talk

Thanks, it was a very hard one for me. This filter introduced grain intentionally, and my knee jerk reaction was to try to remove it. Soon I realized i could not, then I was determined to make it smaller. Flashback to my teen years: My first car I spray painted the interior black metal on the doors. It came out with the same texture. I was devestated. Then my friends came over and said, 'Wow! How did you get it to look like that?'

Yeah, about the undo's. What was surprising me is that the plugin had a way of accessing it. Recall the plugin was not even open when I deleted the background. Somehow photoshop not only saves the backgrounds, it makes them available to other applications. Then suddenly it did not seem so strange. Have you ever noticed there are some plugins where your image is in the middle, and then colored horizontal and verticle lines seem to connect the image to the border of the window? This is just a guess, but I think programs really don't work with irregular selections. They work with rectangles and then disguard the extra pixels. You might say, 'Who cares?'.
    I might say, 'Good point.'

I have been using JPEG Cleaner so long I'd have thought there'd be a newer version! Same as everyone I have had to make my pictures smaller to come under the size limits. The program can save over 40 kb sometimes, though 10-20 kb is probably the average.

Hey, that's very nice Sonya. I'm glad it worked well for you
too.:) I applied with many summer pictures and it worked
well with most of them, both in Photoshop and Paint Shop
Pro 7. So don't hesitate to try it with other landscapes.

There is also another nice tutorial I did for Adobe Photoshop
that shows how to convert a picture of a landscape
into an oil painting. The tutorial is a bit longer than the Autumn one
but it was well explained. I will translate it here one of these days...

    Here's a li'l tuto I did tonight.:)

Sounds strange to me. I think that Bigbuck's explanation might
be the key...It is possible that there is a hidden memory that
is still active in the background. How the plugin access to it?
this is stg the plugin programmers might be able to tell.

...and nice effect you did on that witch HO, I like the
    grainy texture in it. :)

    Thanks U.

The grainy witch was a good witch. The best of the three that I posted. There are a couple more which might be at least as good, I think, but I can settle for that one.

There used to be someone named Marja that posted on one of the forums I look at. I wonder if she would have liked 2151. It seems like something she might agree with. Who knows?

So what am I? Chopped liver? (don't answer that). I have been posting in this forum secretly using photoshop instead of psp. Don't tell anyone. I've missed you. This is a strange avocation. Everybody who does this, including myself, wants more tools and techniques...when we already have more than we can use! I'm going to post link to a new tool in your honor! A free tool. A cool tool.

Re: Paint Shop Pro & PhotoFiltre Talk

Ok, here's the tutorial... I can't say that it was easy to translate it
for my program is in French and I had to rely on online screenshots
for some of the vocabulary. But I think that I got it straight.;)

Here's an easy way to transform a simple picture into an oil painting
effect. This is how the picture looked at first.....

...and after I applied the change.

Please notice that you will get better result with a picture that is
bright or not too dark otherwise some areas will become black
    after applying the effects.;)

Make An Oil Painting from An Image with Photoshop
This tutorial was done with Photoshop version7

    1. Open the picture that you will modify in Photoshop.

    2. Go to Image > Adjustments > Hue / Saturation
    Hue 0, Saturation + 50, Lightness 0
    Click Ok

    see screenshot

    3. Go to your Menu > filters > Distort > Glass
Apply these settings: Glass > Distortion 3, Smoothness 3, Texture to Canvas Scaling 79 %, Invert unchecked
    Click Ok

Duplicate your layer by right clicking on your background layer,
(mine is "arriere-plan") choose“Duplicate” from the context window options.
    See screenshot

    4. Go to your Menu > filters > Paint Daubs >
Brush Size 4, Sharpness 1, Brush Type Simple
    Click Ok

5.Go to the Menu > Filters > Brush Strokes> Choose Angled Stokes
and apply these settings, Scaling 46, Stroke Length 3, Sharpness 1
    Click Ok

    6. Go to the Menu > Texturizer > Texture > Canvas >
Scaling 65% , relief, 2 , light top left, invert unchecked
    Click Ok

    7. Duplicate your layer or background. Once on layer 2, go to the Layer
Palette scrolling Menu just under “Layers” and scroll down until you
    see Incrustation. Click on Incrustation.

    8. Go to the Menu > Filters > Stylize > Emboss and apply these settings
Angle 135, height 1, Amount 500 just like in the sreenshot below.;)
    Click Ok

Now go to the Menu> Layers > scroll down to > Flatten picture/image
or just type (Shift + Ctrl + E) this is another way to flatten the picture.;)

    Voilà! You’re done! :)

Save you’re image as a .jpg

Winter scenes look great with those settings too....

    Hi guys,
Can you give me any advice on that Vizros plugin for PSP9? It DL's as an .exe rather than just zipped files. Is is standalone? The website says there is problems with registration in PSP9.....
    Thanks,
    Brad.

    Brad-

I'm glad somebody liked it. There is a program dealing with resizing to very large sizes better than what photoshop can do on its own. It's called Pictura, and it is not a full release version. My initial assessment is that it is very sophisticated. It can be found at http://www.dmmd.net

If you can't figure out how to download it, pm me.

BTW, I thought you had even more flaming pear programs than i did?
